Never Gonna Give You Up

Description
This is a song I originally recorded in 1979, then laid the tracks down again in 1998. It has sat since then with no vocals. A very talented Vocalist / Songwriter JOYCE DORRANCE agreed to help me out. She brought the track to life, while not loosing that funky feel. I hope you'll enjoy the reawakening of "Never Gonna Give You Up" . . .

Lyrics
Never gonna give you up
You are my treasure candy;
Never gonna give you up
I aim to keep you handy
Never gonna give you up
Forever is our starting line

I am smitten;
I admit to that
I don't conceal;
What I feel
The art of love is made from colors of the rainbow, that falls from the sky ;
upon you and I,
ahhhhhhh

Never gonna give you up;
You are my good luck charm;
Never gonna give you up
Melt  in your open arms
Never gonna give you up
Through decades past the end of time
Never gonna give you up
I sipped from your love potion;
Never gonna give you up
I'm brimming with devotion
Never gonna give you up
Forever is our starting line

I am smitten;
I admit to that
I don't conceal;
What I feel
The art of love is made from colors of the rainbow, that falls from the sky ;
upon you and I,
ahhhh
Feel my dancing dynamite
Welcome to exotica delight
Give me horns...

Never gonna give you up
You are my treasure candy;
Never gonna give you up
No need to call Jim Dandy!
Never gonna give you up
Forever is our starting line..

Never Gonna Give You Up
Great funky feel in the Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers tradition. Nice chord changes. Love the e piano. The muted guitar on the right side adds to the funk.

Never Gonna Give You Up
I'm with Alec, I hear some Steely Dan in this. Great groove, like the bass especially. Slick feel on the rhythm guitar. Some clever lines in the lyric "Forever is our starting line"

Give You Up
Nicely produced and performed....very pro sounding, in the pocket bass, groovy feel. Reminds of the club scene in the late 80's. Nice job!

Club Scene!
That is the connection, it was written as an intro song for the band I played with in the clubs of LA.
No lyrics were ever written, the lead singer would just talk over the track . . .

Wow
You two did good here. Very Pro sounding mix and production, and Joyce's vocal and lyrics are, as alway, just great.

Very late 70's early 80's vibe and while I do hear a little Steely Dan, I also catch a little Atlanta Rhythm Section too. Two of my all time favorites.

Fantastic work on the tracks and mix Steve.

great collaboration
Please turn down the drums slightly and/or the vocals up a bit more. The drums are not very exciting, and the vocals are superb. Especially in the beginning the balance is a bit lopsided.

Ok, I really really don't like that sax and trumpets. Play those solos on a Hammond or something that sounds convincing when synthesized, because with such natural vocals you really can't have such cheesy sounds. Nothing wrong with the notes, but the sounds really don't work here.

Very nice funky tune otherwise.

Cheesy Sounds
First, thanks for stopping by!
The track you hear backing the vocals is from and recorded in 1998.
I used a Roland MT32, Yamaha PSR530, & a Fender Mustang Bass. The sounds are dated, as well as the technology. I left it in its original form intentionally, to capture a period in my life musically. I did consider a remake, however Joyce used this track to write the vocals and like its character. Joyce also did the final mix of her vocals too.
I always enjoy your comments coming from such a refined musician as you.
