Lyrics
I guess the lies came too easy
and the truth became too hard
some nights we felt so real
like I'd fallen out of my heart and into yours
and it felt right

but it was the wrong time in two lives that were dividing
one day too little, the next too much
and your good nights were not nearly enough
no, your goodnights were not nearly enough

who knows why goodbye took so long
you made it here and I came home
but just the once

but it wasn't home any more than any other four walls I've paid for
no it wasn't home, well not mine
it was just another station on this rail line
just another stop on this rail line
still got a ticket to the end of the line

Excellent!!!
I really like the sound of the strings on this Dan, and your vocal is really just right (reminds me of Peter Blakely). I also like the way this lifts with the drums before the little break section. Great use of percussion too. A good song with a very classy production to boot + well thought out arrangement - no nits to pick!
Excellent.
Cheers from the Deep South.

a nitpicking abstinence?
Thanks, Neil. I'll be checking out some more Peter Blakely - I only really know that Crying in the Chapel song. Yeah, I'm really happy with the string bed underneath the song, it really blends everything together, kind of in the way I've used reverb in the past. But this way all the instruments remain a lot clearer.

OOps
sorry Dan, I think I meant the strings on the mandocello/uke/etc -the "guitar-like" bits - although the bed is great also.

Dan this is really cool - I hear Smashing Pumpkins and I have no idea how you could contain yourself and hold the guitar out of this! Not that it NEEDS guitar - it just would have been really COOL to include guitar. I suspect it has something to do with the series but none the less very enjoyable to listen to - thanks!

Pumpkins look better Smashed
Thanks, Sigmund. The Pumpkins are an influence on me, but not really after Mellon Collie. That album was full of strings and bombast, and I guess this track has both of those. and don't worry, I'll be doing another version of this with a quadruple-harmonised solo and twice as much Gong and Timpani work:)

great flavor and lyrics
This is really something to be proud of. Definitely has an asian flavor in it's melody and rhythmic percussive sounds.
I also really enjoyed the lyrics, which express the awkward situation that many people get into at least once in their lives. Nice tune.

Awkward Situations
Yeah, this tune is really about questioning why the heart wants to go back while also realising how unhealthy a situation was. I hope this is carried in the feel of the song and that's why a chose more sparse instrumentation than usual. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the song and could relate.

Thanks Karen and Char
I appreciate you both giving this a listen, and even more appreciative of the positive feedback. I felt like I'd taken a few chances with this one and the response has been very encouraging.
And Char, this one was sung very close to mic to get that intimate sound but, without a pop screen, this was a bit troublesome.

I think even guitar-based rock needs more guitars! everything does! Coming from the Mutt-Lange school Much More is Actually Much More, this song was a challenge but I am happy with the mood it has at the moment. I think...

so, was it raining?
Cheers, Bill. I want the end of the album/EP to trail of into about 30-40 mins of rain audio. I want to listen to the record as I fall asleep, and I never sleep better than when it's raining :)
Glad you dug the tune.

an album, huh?
well, I'd been hoping to finish up and get the the EP mastered and pressed by July. but more tunes are coming, and honestly it's taking me longer than I wanted to save the funds to get things done. but soon, I want an album available and start playing live.
also, thanks for the positive feedback. wanna remix this one?

Dan
The bridge is a gem with that "ad-hoc" percussion and the slightly detuned bottom end.
GREAT vocals. GREAT guitar sound. Ohh, that little change around 3:45... man.
Completely surrounded and immersed by the song (in a good way ;-).

dantimmermans said 2610 days ago (August 4th, 2010)
that's the mando you're hearing
'Ad Hoc' is certainly the right term to describe the percussion. There's some straight ahead drums in there (just mixed quite low), but the real character of the percussion comes from the Orchestral Percussion audio-unit in GB, which I know nothing about. Good fun, though:)

'Immersion' was a goal, like it is with a lot of atmospheric tunes, but given the ending of the song, an immersive and spacious quality was vital. I'm really pleased this seems to have worked. thanks for your comments, Billy.

Very nice
Love all the acoustic textures, your vocal reminds me a little of the guy from Sleepy Jackson (I love their first album still!). This is a really good song and performance

As an Australian I ought to know the Sleepy Jackson very well, but I don't. The first album, huh? I'll have look. It's great learning what our voices, playing, and songs sound like: we can check out similar bands and learn what else can be done with the things we have.
Glad you like the tune, have a good one.

Oh yeah!
really cool song.
the instrumental break from 2:00 to 2:15 or so, is awesome.
string sounds are neat.
nice and melodic, and it's great that you stepped out of the comfort zone to create something different, and succeeded brilliantly!
I wouldn't add more guitar, I'm thinking of how Cat Stevens sometimes spoiled really good songs by adding too much stuff into them.

dantimmermans said 2609 days ago (August 4th, 2010)
the instrumental break....
...was something I was not sure about including. In demos with just one mandocello the percussive slapping really was too loud and out of character with the song, but with added layers, actual percussion, and the harmony on the 3rd & 4th repeats, those sections really sit comfortably.
thanks for listening, I'll have a listen to more Cat Stevens, for educational purposes :)

I like the vibe you have going here
Nice riffing with the mandocello. There is a ton of dead space at the end of this track, FYI. I liked the falsetto you used at times but other times it sounded forced to me. Sometimes I do the same thing when I tense up while singing. I think maybe you could do an octave lower for accent, kind of like Alice in Chains did so often. I think it would really work in this song. Very cool break too. enjoyed it!

the space is not quite empty at the end....
...but it was a lot to ask people to download an extra 3MB (or so) just so I can create a mood. I thought about doubling the vocal an octave below, and in hindsight, it would have helped distinguish the sections a little better. but I wanted a song with one vocal line standing on its own - I do tend to layer vocals too much. Anyway, I'll give it a shot in revisions and see what effect it has.

the restraint and the gradual build up in this song. Well sung with a distinctive vocal and love the mandocello. My musical partner uses one occasionaly on our songs e.g Treading Water if you fancy a listen. cheers mark

I had a listen to Treading Water and dug it. The mandocello sits nicely with the acoustic when it's strummed that way. glad you liked the dynamics of the tune. I'm working on a video idea for this one, so stay tuned....

Hey,
I think your voice and lilting harmonies are particularly well suited to acoustic washes like this one. Very melancholy vibe to this. Shades of Tea For the Tillerman. Very judicious use of percussion, great restraint. I'm impressed. Tasty reverb washes. Nice track to close the Idioms project with. A fitting Appendix. Loved it.
