Lyrics
somewhere theres a ghost in a Left Banke overcoat
somewhere there's a corner waiting
she got it all arranged so it ain't gonna change
and the walls are all words
with a green armchair
and a place in the sun just for you
its fun to make a splash when you're playin in the waves
might as well if the sky's still blue now
they must be feeling brave, if they tell you to behave
they should show some respect
but don't get too respectable
that just wouldn't be you
hey sylvia,
that's sylvia beach
i imagine you in the light that' s shining through
a painted-up shopfront window
a moment when you knew that someone thought of you
and i know there's a smile
though i can't see your eyes
cuz your face is turning away
i guess in every life
there line up once or twice
the stars and planets that say what goes on in the world
when you met adrienne
the way she took you in
and then when she told ya she really liked american girls
viva sylvia beach

She didn't like her original name?
Although named Nancy after her grandmother Orbison, she later decided to change her name to Sylvia.

The mallets doubling the melody is a great arranging idea. Love the rhythm guitar sound. Very good tune. Great bridge! Recalls XTC's early days.

glad you liked the guitar sound, I traded in my Mexican tele deluxe (and a bunch of extra cash) for an American Standard Tele and this was its first outing.

Digging the vox
Kind of a Tempie or Lennon714 feel on this. Guitars are so cool. Very awesome song my friend. Seems simple, but I know it's not at all. Appreciate all the work you must have done on this one.

Bravo

Thanks
Really glad you liked the song, happy to be compared to 2 of MJ's greatest by another of MJ's greatest!
If I had more time I would have done a few things over, but thankfully I don't mind things raw and unpolished.

Glad it worked for ya... Exercising restraint and not having everything playing all the time, doesn't come that naturally for me!

You
definitely have your own sound. I can pick a R67 song out of the crowd for certain.

Nice one man. Cool guitar phrasing with a nice fitting lead that isn't over the top.

Great lyrics and vocals.

Just had to look up Sylvia Beach as I didn't know who she was. Very interesting...and damn good tune too.
I especially like the verse section and the mallet vibes add a really nice touch to this
Enjoyed

I heard a podcast about ol' sylvia and found it quite interesting, esp. her apparently warm friendship with Papa Hemingway. her partially self-invented name has a nice ring to it... glad you liked!

man
i love your backups. never the same twice. great bridge too. also really dig all the chimes/xylophone/glockenspiel sounds. all around sweet, fun tune after my own heart. i'll be happy to hear this roll around the ipod playlist this week as i'm walking to the train.

glad you like the backup, I don't really know how it's supposed to be done so I just take the intuitive approach... the mallet sound is "boldt vibraphone" ... maybe downloaded off this site?

laughing all the way to the left bank
As a dyed-in-the wool parisian, and book fiend I especially relate to this. The Left Banke reference and the xylophone arrangement give you a lot of points as well.
the image of the light shining through the window is great, I think.

Deftly composed, arranged.
This is such an expert arrangement with such great little aug/sus? guitar nuggets and hooks at aery turn that I got lost in the music and had to backtrack to read the lyrics afterward. I read your exchange with alac--Anrew--about XTC at the same time you sang the line about getting to respectable (street?!). LOL.

How do you Capture that Classic Sound?
I mean it sounds like one of those classic tunes from the late 60s to the early 70s. And those background vocal harmonies are like butter, they just melt in so tastily!!! And everything sounds sooooo clean!! Awesome production! Wow!!

Great tune-- I love writing about things I know nothing about, Hemingway's advice to the contrary.

You did an excellent job on the arrangement + instrumentation too--and I like the changes a lot: nice flat 6 chord especially!
An all around success in my book!

Subtle track. Your voice is very good as is everything in this mix, it has a bit of a Blue Oyster Cult feel to it. A bit different form your harder edge.
