'Cuz I Can

Description
I started writing this around this time last year. At first it was a bunch of licks (I was working on solos on the reso). After awhile I asked myself: "Why am I playing just a bunch of licks?"
Then a memorable scene came back to me: one of my more stellar students had just pushed another unsuspecting one down a flight of stairs. When I asked him, "Why did you do that?", he replied:
"Cuz I can".
'Nuf said. I'm sure Mr. Douglas, Aldridge, Smith, and many, many more "Can", too (r-e-a-l-l-y well)…but this is my version.
BTW: I'll be leaving for Vermont soon. I like to answer people's comments...but if I don't, it's probably because I'm splitting wood in the backwoods.

Really enjoyed
and the title made me smile. Apparently at the end of Live Aid back in 1985 an exhausted Bob Geldof stood at the back of the stage and a young kid came up to him and said "is that it?"....kids!!

Wow Bob, your guitar almost has a Hammer-Dulcimer tonal quality. And I love your judicious use of slides throughout.

When I...
...bought the guitar, I first tried it out with my nails. I'd been playing lots of nylon string and it sounded great on the reso. But the sales guy convinced me to try a thumb pick and steel fingerpicks. I'd used them before, so it wasn't a stretch.

Hammer-Dulcimer is a good comparison. The picks just make the sound so full and strong. I always use them now.

Thanks, Micheal.

Res-o-rama!
The opening reminds me a bit of some of the Brouwer studies, and then it goes off in completely non-Brouwer-esque direction, which I love! This is really well composed and performed... I love the way it ends, with that inconclusive chord. I always enjoy your resonator guitar work!

Very well done!

guitapick said 2540 days ago (August 11th, 2010)
Hey Clark...
...I love to talk shop:

The first 6 bars of the intro could go anywhere (and I know what you mean about Brouwer). The last 2 bars determined the direction for me, in the end (that and the tone of the reso which has that voice).

As to the end of the tune: the proverbial fortunate mistake. I was practicing the intro and, in the 4th bar, I lost my concentration and fingered the chord a fret lower than usual. It sounded really cool and I thought it would work really well at the end...so that's where it went. Glad you liked it...and I hope you're well. Thanks for the listen.

Back in dem woods
a good place to hear something like this, although I tend to think more on the lines of the Ozarks then I do Appalachia, but anyplace for this kind of music is a good place.

Great picking and tone, Bob, love it.

The early sound
You get out of that guitar is fantastic. Nice job demonstrating the sounds you manage from that instrument. I liked the way you traded your fingers for a slide on the fly. All those licks matched well with each other. Is that drop D? Enjoyed.

Dear John,
Sorry...had to do that.
It's such a sweet axe. The fact that you can switch between slide and fingering is a huge plus. Dobros are fantastic instruments...but the Nationals have that dual nature which really shines in my world.
It's a G tuning (sounds like drop D, which rocks...but it's DGDGBD). The guitar seems to love that arrangement.
Thanks, man.

Keep your eyes open...
...for a National Radiotone from the early '90s if you're into this sound/technique. You really need that higher action for the slide. I've seen one for $500, which is a complete steal, considering what you can get out of 'em. The newer Radiotone's are nice, too...but not the same and MUCH more expensive.

Thanks for dropping by, Cris.

There are layers of envy to be dealt with here....
I'll start with envy of your possession of the National.... I really want a reso guitar, just to get that Ray Davies 'Lola' and 'Apeman' sound....

You, on the other hand, also have some talent in the reso and slide department, so there's that layer of envy as well....

Following which is the vacation-in-Vermont layer.... Prob'ly about enough envy for one song posting...

This has nice drive and it does have that back porch vibe....

Yeh. I agree with Ed about that slide...Wow. This whole thing is delightfully out of tune all the way through. Only a guitarist with an awful lot of skill could pull this off such panache. I love this one, Bob. And, oh, that unfinished chord at the end is the perfect conclusion. Had some fun, did ya? It comes through.

Post-Pro
All those slides are so effective and well-done, I thought at first they must be post-production edits you did with pitch-shifting software. But as I listened I realized you were doing it in real time, and it's very impressive. That last chord, as Clark mentioned, is one that really grabs your ear. You're waiting for a resolution -- and -- it never comes! Kind of like life. A very enjoyable track.
