Description
Dedicated to someone who changed my heart in a dark hour, asked nothing in return for her priceless gift, enriched me with kindness beyond wealth and whose thousand well-wishes I dream of repaying in kind.

Speaking of heart: Eternal thanks to big brother Ed "SloParts" Wemmerus for gifting me the bass and guitar I play here.

Lyrics
If love makes the time pass so much faster,
Why do you make my heart stand so still?
So still. You still my heart...

Love, you strip-away my inhibitions.
All this time I thought I had none
I tried, but the desert dried
And I died. But still my heart...

You melt the hours into minutes,
Turn moonlight to sun
I've turned this brief candle into a torch for you.
Can you see? You steal my heart. Be still my heart...

If I can lead, and you can follow
And when you take the lead, I follow suit
Is this where love is, in this give and take,
Mon Tout? You steal my heart
Still my heart … can love again.

Thanks for coming to my house.
Thank you for having lent an ear and come away with that praise. This tune it was all about that emotional wave or curve as you put it -- sort of a breakthrough for me, and you got it. I listened to your 16-track marvel, "Coming to My House," to scheck-out your frame of reference and I'm really happy to find you've got a history with well-crafted, handmade music. Thanks again, --B.

I always wondered
how the Takamine would sound in the hands of someone who really knew how to play it. Now I have my answer, it sounds awesome.

So does the rest of the song little Brother. This is a fantastic song. Well written and well sung, even if a little low in volume for us deaf guys.

Fantastic instrumentation and production, just and awesome song.

"Taks" a lot!
Thanks, Ed, for the compliments. On the volume, I went very light on compression/limiting to keep it clear. Lots of quiets here, but the loud bits are well into the redline.* I picked-up some gain using my no-budget spectral analyzer, aka GarageBand's "Visual EQ." How else might I boost master gain? (*I'm starting to suspect has a falsely-low redline indicator. Is that possible?)

Existential
Hey, I may not know what I'm talking about, but the word fits this perfectly. This was wonderful Bob--a song I certainly can relate to and resonate (everybody uses that word around here, so I thought I'd give it crack) with. High marks in all areas on this--and well worth waiting for. Thanks again--and take good care, Michael

Ah, but you inform my existential resonations.
To have you, of encyclopedic knowledge and Easy Aces fame, visit these kindnesses on me is... way gone, Daddy, gone. Thank you. (And fear not; when we wring "resonates" dry, we can graduate to "informs.")

Holy crap B6s!
This is freaking wild man!

First, the bass parts are excellent. There are places where the bass stands out and just thumps. I love great big hairy stinky low hanging bass.

Next the axe work was totally unexpected. Whoa! You must have had a Fender pacifier when you were an infant. Way to put the guitar into 6th gear Bob!

Finally, the vocals were a surprise as well. Cool effects and mix.

Way to raise the bar.

Hey, M.A., you just woke-up my dog with my laughter over the funnest compliments ever for me on bass & guitar. And you're a great one to get validation like that. Vocals are little surprising, for sure, that's all I'm gonna say about that.. I'm keeping a low profile, lest the Pitch Police find me, nyuk, nyuk!

I am
Quite still as I listen tonight...

I can think of a thousand clever things to say, but I'll keep it light. This is such a heartfelt song, and surely belongs in the Cupcake Nebula amongst all the beautiful stars.

You never give yourself enough credit as far as your vocals go, but man, they sound terrific here. The track is so moody, but your lyrics somehow change it into such a positive feeling. Love the guitar solo as well. I'm so impressed & now this is my new fav from you.

The blue & red thingies in the pic, yeah they work! Good stuff BB!

You dig it? Don't stop! It's a big deal for me to get such validating vocal praise from a singer of your caliber (45? Duck!!!). Okay, I admit it, I'm pretty happy with my vocals here, despite (or because of) the trade-offs between pitch and emotion.

Speaking of cupcakes, hope the sweet thing I wrote this for is half as fond of this tune as you are, because she's amazing. Thanks again, Raven.

Ed's bass is great! Really propels this along. Actually it's all pretty great. Playing and singing are all tops. Really believable vocals helped me get right into the song. The sign of a god tune is when you just wanna listen and find yourself not perched over the keyboard thinking of what to type.... That was me... Just then.
Nice one

How cool...
... to get into in a tune here that you forget to type along... now that is a great thing to hear. Thank you very, very much, Ted. And yeah, Ed's an amazing guy, deserves all the support in the world. He wouldn't take payment for those axes but I'm gonna get him back, I swear!

Thank you, Harold. Guitar is my primary voice, so your compliment makes me feel superb, indeed. I tried not to think to much about meter and some of those leads came out of some new, crazy place. It was a little different, as is this song. Maybe it's because this is the first love song I think I've ever completed in my adult life.

Hey Bob-a-ree-bob!
Nice job on the vocals brother... even if i did have to squint my ears a bit in places to hear you sing.

Ebbs and flows.
Hey, Relic, thanks for taking time off that rockin; beach to give a listen at the Summerfest side stage. The structure sort of built and receded, just kind of made me treat each of the four verses as its own chapter. Thanks again, very much.

excellent tune Bob. very cool that it shifts around in structure. almost like 4 or 5 songs in one, i dig that!

Bob6stringer said 2504 days ago (August 14th, 2010)
That structure...
A few people have brought up that structure. So: I wrote the music on bass and the words roughly simultaneously. There are four verses, each ending with a kind of mini-chorus based on the title line. Verse 1 is quiet, 2 builds, then an instrumental bridge gets bigger. No. 3 is the big one, followed by a quiet 4th and then a loud closer. I never gave it much thought, just that I wanted there to be that emo-wave. No idea what's up, just glad you liked it.

About that bug... I think my Mac is infected; I think I'm due for a nice, new MB Pro. Or maybe stop driving people like you and Raven nuts with that animated gif! Thanks, Vic.

Really cool
Like the vibe of this. I like this song alot. Needs the vocals turned up a couple dbs I think. The bass guitar sounds a bit too high in the mix too, or at least a bit boomy. Really cool sounding song!

Appreciate the active listen:
Thanks for checking it out, Charles. The guitar in the quiet sections serves mainly as a background keyboard (using the volume pot for a pedal), leaving just bass, drums and vocal. I wanted the bass to be a primary instrument there and gave it extra presence in the 80-to-125 Hz neighborhood, and some extra pluck at the higher harmonics. But your points are valid, and prove you really gave this an active listen. I'll reconsider if I ever revisit this mix. And sure, a couple more db on the vocals is a reasonable idea.

Still My Heart
Has a 70's flavor for me, I hear some Moody Blues/ Jefferson Airplane in there. I like all the variations in the drums, and the bass is a full partner in the mix. Cool lead breaks.

Bob6stringer said 2504 days ago (August 15th, 2010)
The 70's? I was there, I'm told.
Hmm. I like the mix as is but Crissew raises an interesting point, prefers the bass pushed back down. I wrote the song on bass -- a first for this 6-stringer. I wanted to channel John Paul Jones if he were in Zep today (using today's tech and mixes. BTW his new band - Vultures - is way too compressed and he's STILL to far back!). Love the Moodies classic 7 albums, never thought of them OR JA, but I bet we share a lot of musical history together, Dave. Hope to keep in touch with you on that.

Get outta my head!
What I mean is: you really seem to "get" what I'm trying to do and I really thank you for it, David. I almost used a two-word song intro on this one: "Epic love." Also, I forever am wanting to go back to my old 1-4-5 kid rock and blues roots, but can't bring myself to because I always feel like I have to push myself to be: unique. So you hit two nails right on my head -- ouch! Thanks!

Man, that solo surprised me. Love the mood of the third verse. The whole song keeps changing all the time in subtle ways. Seems you'll stay in a given melody but you get free somewhere else all the time. Highs and lows. Man, have to love that.

I just love your comment, man!
I'm not sure which solo, the ending one is my favorite. (I wanted to be an early-Zep Jimmy Page, going off tempo then returning!) About the "changing" thing, I thought of going back and making things more uniform, but each section seemed to want to have a life of its own. I decided to leave it and see if I'd get any comments as cool as yours. THANKS, Billy!

I
love all the changes in this Bob and the bass is awesome, always good to hear an up front bass for a change.
I can hear the Page influences in your guitar sound and playing, especially at the end, I could feel a bit of 'Achilles Last Stand' coming through and that's excellent to me, I'm a big Page fan!
A great arrangement, with all the different parts and making it all fit together so well, you done a great job, very much enjoyed!

I'm so busted!
I was trying to keep it my little secret until I told Billy (one above) that I was thinking of Page. In fact, I borrowed a little "whip" of a riff from the Lemon Song off Zep II -- only three notes, but if you're a Zep neanderthol like me it's unmistakable. Thanks muchly for stopping in, Bob.

I always wonder what people expect of me when they visit. Sometimes I go fast, slow, etc., but usually there's a build where I try to push my guitar somewhere new (for me). This one isn't an obvious "guitar" song, since I used the axe for ambience through the 1st verse.

You can do it!
Mark, I started trying to sing a few MJ songs back after years of hiatus, of ruining my old band's live recordings. But I needed to do something to fill-out my recordings because I can't do all you can do on the guitar. If you ever decide you want vocals, listen to Leo Kottke's Great Big Boy album -- his near-spoken word (and great female bkg vocalists) provide for a rewarding listen. You can do it!

hey bob. i love the 'way-out' retro feel of this. a cult classic in the making. it's got all kinds of things going on to maintain interest. would have liked your voice more forward in the mix...but then i would say that. the little jig at 2.37 sounds like it's leading into some jazz funk riff....and then goes somewhere completely different - clever stuff. love the section from 3.29. what's that you're saying - mange-tout? sorry, couldn't resist. stellar production on this one, incredible guitar work. love the hawaiian (how do you spell that word?) finish on this. yeah...you really created something very interesting.

The Takamine's got humbuckers, and also thinner strings. After I did this tune I went down to .009's [hi E] on my Strat for the first time in at least 20 years... and this is such a rich jamba juice - of a tune much moreover - at 2:00 is an enriching orgy of a solo - introducing
a schizo cutaway - nice open throat vocals -sweeter than bowie - at 3:33 - another
passageway leads to a room with frank zappa - I love that guitar solo at the end - and the final 8 seconds I enjoyed 5 times so far - that part is just wicked cool

I relive its making through you.
Wow, Scott... you noticed! All the details you mentioned, I went back and listened for. In short, you've rekindled the joy (and other emotions) I had in making this tune. Your FZ ("Joe's Garage" no doubt) reference cracks me up! And the near-end solo is maybe my favorite for emo-mojo. Thanks so much.

Still My Heart
This song is brilliantly put together. The first listen catches you off guard with interesting and unexpected twists and turns. The second listen is absolutely necessary to catch all you missed the first time, and appreciate it all over again. This is musical genius at work - very cool song - thank you for sharing this with us!

Thanks for noticing the details.
Thanks, sig. Repeated listening -- that's just a golden compliment. I think the left and right rhythm guitars in the harder-rocking third verse are maybe my favorite for layered details, headphone listens.

Actually
caught this one over at Icomp. Easier to leave a comment here though. Bob this is "epic" as the kids say. Smokin guitar chops. Great job on the singing but the mix made the vocal sound distant and separated. Still great over all. I'm glad I caught it.
Peace

Really? Hmm...
I've gotten a lot of comments on the vocal being low but I just don't get it. Pop me a PM if you want, I don't know if you;ll convince me of what you and others are saying but I'd sure be interested to know what you mean. Because I like your stuff and respect your ears.

I wonder if a little (or a little more) limiting on the vocals
would help with the "distance" people seem to be perceiving.

That said--what a cool song and arrangement! You get such a variety of guitar (and other) textures here, it's like an album all in one song. And such a range of emotional intensities too!

The Takamine and Peavey sound righteous here, by the way. Excellent work.

A lifetime in a bottle.
Your "like an album in one song" comment is one of the greatest comments ever -- Thanks, Michael. RE vocals, I think the natural room reverb bugs some. I'm OK with it... unless... SONY, are you out there? Will remix for food!

Fantastic tune, Bob. Just fantastic. The vocal delivery is just on the money and the sounds off to the sides are great. Just adds up with every extra listen. Loved this!

Mark, delayed thanks for checking-out the tune. Much as we often say we aim to please only ourselves when we make music, the dirty little secret is that it's very satisfying to win your ears' good favor!

It builds!
Dave, I love your real-time comments! I did only instrumentals for some years, and I know what you mean... when you like the music, it's always a roll of the dice to see if the voice will match the mood the music sets. Glad you liked it.

Love how this start out as an almost 50's style ballad and ends up a semi funk epic with killer leads, nice changes throughout ! Excellent!

Where have I been?!
Where have YOU been? I'm the one that's been so bogged down it's hard to get here often enough at present. The changes in this tune are evident because I added the guitar after the rhythm section and alongside the vocals, so I "interpreted" each verse to rise and fall with the "Drama." Thank you for the praise, see you as soon as I can take care of some non-music business.

Hey Bob,
Thanks for visiting my last song. Brought me to your page... The guitar on this is mastery. Well done. The vocal on it seems a little distant though, needs to be brought us a few dB if you asked me. Starts off very mellow and spacey and takes a decidedly more active turn. DL'd! Thx.

Reopening the investigation:
I just sent you a too-long message so I'll just say thanks here, and reiterate that this low-vox-level criticism has been driving me crazy because I've been happy with the mix despite the criticisms. Now, however, I will "reopen the investigation" in light of your masterful mix on "The Maybe Conflict," and re-listen on some good, flat-response monitors ASAP. I'l report back here when I do that. Thanks for lending your ears, Race.

Char, THANK YOU so much for the listen and your kind words. As a lot of people know, I was rabidly instrumental until the last year or so, when I realized my voice might have something to say, too. About the iPad theft... I feel like I was famous for being a bystander -- Tim, the owner, is also a well-known podcaster and I got my 5 minutes (literally) of fame there, too!

Teenage Angst Explosion?
Bob, I began listening, thinking this was going to be a sappy love song... but those wild guitar break-outs came and wowed me. LOL

They came like an explosion of the angst that builds up in an up-and-down love affair... very hot. I also like the choices you made with the bass to punctuate the piece.

Very passionate stuff. ;)

Man, do you ever know me!
J.A., you're so right about where those little explosions came from. I'd say "if you only knew," but I suspect we've both lived, loved, and all that. So on a lighter note, I will say that this song was a big departure for me into teen angst land. Serious and sincere with all the sap, but at the same time, I was joking to friends that I sang it wearing leopard-print tights and a mop-head wig! The bass continues to plague me -- I wanted it strong but have yet to figure-out how to isolate-out the boominess that happens, depending on what set of phones/speakers it plays on.
