Chillin w/ awigze & alexsanchez

Description
Here is a song I originally did to AlexSanchez's backer. Awigze was kind enough to offer to put a really nice sax part on this. It really filled out the sound. So much so that when I went back and listened to the song it sounded empty. Great job on this Andy! I tried to get the original multitracks from alex but was not successful so couldn't do anything with the mix on anything but the vocals and sax.

Lyrics
Chillin

All the time i find myself
in the shoes of someone else
I think itll somehow make me more
Someone that everyone will adore
But it never works, I just feel like dirt, and it really hurts
I just want to have my turn, take my shot and not get burned

CHORUS
Is reality what I percieve with my eyes
Or is it more complicated than that
Do the choices I make put me in disguise
Can I put on a few more hats

VERSE II
Dont wanna be the fool dont wanna be meek
There's gotta be some kinda technique
So I bought a new shirt... blue suede shoes
Now Im at a loss for what im supposed to do
Got cash in my hand gotta make a plan
get my lonesome self off this island

VERSE III
Turn introspective intellect
Into a man that people will respect
I wanna be cool, Dont wanna be the fool
I wanna be chique, with a killer physique
Im fit to be tied.. motivated by pride... I simply wont be denied

groovetastic. what is that vocal effect thing. is it autotune? hmm....
great chorus...and very fine sax. this almost sounds like a hip-hop track. did i mention that vocal effect....hmmm.....harrumph!

crissew said 2559 days ago (August 17th, 2010)
Thanks Julian
The vocal effect is actually 2 duplicated vocal tracks, one octaved down and one octaved up. I then took the tracks and added different effects to each one to fatten it up. I used a similar effect on two other songs. Darkness (a rap tune) and Black Widow Girl (much more subtle). Thanks. I was debating between Jazz and hip-hop, lol. How often does that confusion come up? lol

Chillin' cat
That photograph is cracking me up. If I tried that with my cat, I would be bleeding. Alex seems to be absent these days. Perhaps summer break was good for him. I tried to get in touch with him too but I think (hope) he will be pleased with the effort here. This is one of those songs that a sax player can find a groove from the first measure. I like what you did with the vocals and I had a great time with the tune. Glad you let me climb aboard!

Was my pleasure
Had to work with you at some point, it was inevitable! Thanks for the great sax part, the song sounds empty without it now, lol.

The sax work is fantastic in this one. Wow.

Chillin
The lyric does a good job portraying your character's insecurity. Phrasing/melody works fine against the backer, feels hip-hop to me over the verse anyway. Andy's sax is like the MJ's magic bullet, he'll take any song and make it better.

Yeah
I was thinking hip hop in the verse. The chorus has a kind of Earth Wind and Fire thing going on. Thanks for listening!

Chillin' in a fez
I dig this tune. Especially the vocals. Nice job capturing your breaths and vocal details. And the vocal octave layering reminded my of Sly Stone and a bunch of players getting to sing backup. Nice sax. Really enjoyable track. Thanks for sharing. Nice collab!

amazing track, i was listening the other track you did with Awigze yesterday and was blown away, this has that same polish on those shoes. Your voice is outstanding bro.

I think you
are thinking of a song that James did with awigze maybe? I think I did the backup vocals on that but it was pretty much James' deal there. Thanks for listening!

Chillin'
ooh, what a great addition andy's sax makes here! this sounds terrific! am i hearing autotune on your vox charles?? if so, i'd love to be hearing your voice without it. if it's not really there, then i'm losing my mind (entirely possible!) congrats to all!

Thank you for listening
There isn't any autotune on these vocals. The garageband transpose effect uses an autotune like algorithm though which is probably what you are hearing. Appreciate it!

Great sound
Great sound and production - especially like the verbs and delays.
That lo-fi piano, sounding almost like an orchestral harp, is very effective.

crissew said 2559 days ago (August 17th, 2010)
Thank you
for listening to this new one. The piano was actually hi fi but I degraded it as best I could with various tools like slate, channelstrip and a limiter. Couldnt get the original multitracks so I did the best I could.

jdholliday said 2559 days ago (August 17th, 2010)
I think
you are well on your way to creating a unique sound and style, maybe even a new genre!
I can't deal with that piano lick or the whistling but the song when the new backer is done will be awesome! Very cool vocal mix and effects!

crissew said 2559 days ago (August 17th, 2010)
Unfortunately
Havent been able to get the mix to do anything with it. Not sure I am going to put much more time than I have in on this one. Too much new stuff to do, new ideas to explore. BTW, I took all whistling out now that the sax is in there. It is only for like 4 bars on the outro now. That is a tribute to George Clinton and Dr. Dre.

Funny
but the thing that I noticed the most was the reverbe and echo on the sax and vox. That is a cool effect. I'm going to have to try and duplicate that.

I'm very impressed with your harmonies. Excellent job there.

I really like this song a lot. I've listened to it a couple times at work and now at home on my good monitors.

This is one of those songs that is highly stylized, and therefore I figured may not go over that well on MJ. Glad you liked it.

The title matches the groove perfectly. Great chorus. There's a confessional aspect to these lyrics that's very impressive. Very introspective and well done. As always Charles, your vocal is spot on. You have a distinct voice that's instantly recognizable. Of course, Andy's sax is the perfect icing on this tasty cake! Download!

Killer sax in this tune, and a very soulful vocal performance. Is that an autotune effect on the vocal in the chorus, or what is it you are doing? Very interesting. Enjoyed listening to this - thanks!

It is actually garageband's "vocal transformer" effect. I think it does use an autotune type algorithm for its transform effect. Thanks for listening.

I have been messing around with effects. I didnt use chorus here, what I used was a "vocal spreader" which widens the stereo field. I did it on a select track to "engulf" the other vocals. In the end, it did seem to sound a little like chorus though, lol.
