Description
From Roxylee:

When I saw that I had been paired with Bryn (Particledots) for the random summer song collaboration, my first thought was 'Oh, man, I hope he's not grimacing over there." I mean, he's a *real *musician- he plays instruments, knows about arranging, mixing, production, etc.

When he sent me his song _ Summer For Two_ I remembered I'd started a song titled _In the Summer_ over 3 years ago, which was buried in my GarageBand folder along with other unfinished projects.

The two songs seemed to go hand in hand, so I suggested we morph them. Bryn agreed, I stuck them together and began the task of trying to make them blend.

Bryn is a genius at this stuff, so he took over and brilliantly came up with the finished product.

Bryn is a top-notch musician, a true gentleman, and a pleasure to collaborate with.

We hope you will enjoy our efforts. :-)

From particledots:

When bud floated the idea of a random collaboration, I was intrigued and immediately signed up – wondering who I would be paired with, how the collaboration would work, whether or not I would be out of my comfort zone, what would their expectations be of me and vice versa.

It was really cool to see how smokeyVW randomized the pairings and posted the video on youtube.

My first thought when I saw I was paired with Roxylee was ‘do I adapt to her way of making music, or try to get her to adapt to mine’

My first contact with Roxy was to ask her if she had anything she wanted to me to work on. I truly intended to take a back seat in writing, playing, performing. As it happened, she was recovering from a bad cold/flu and couldn’t sing initially - but she immediately suggested an experimental approach.

So I got the bug and wrote/recorded ‘summer for two’ (bass, vocals, synth, drums, piano etc) which actually very poppy and not ‘experimentally out there’ at all and sent it on.

In the mean time, Roxylee sent me her track ‘In the summer’ and suggested the two songs should be glued together. Initially, I couldn’t see how the two songs would fit together, but Roxylee had a vision for this. Also, roxy’s track sounded very different to the version you hear now, it was much sparser and very different tonal qualities. Not long after this I got Roxy’s vocals for ‘Summer For Two’ and was floored by what she had done.

I was still having problems ‘hearing the glue’ for the two songs so roxy had a go at mixing the two pieces together. She did a great job and when I heard what she had done, I finally got it. So, following roxy’s template for the glue – I deconstructed and then reconstructed ‘In the summer’ and the result is what you are listening to now

As a final production flourish, I thought it would be nice to add the whistle sound at the beginning as a homage to BW and I have to say my reference points when I listen to this final version are all BW related – from the bubbly synth bass of ‘Beach Boy’s Love You (1977), to American Spring (early 70’s) to Smile (mid 1960’s)

But given the above comment, it is still distinctively Roxylee and particledots that you are listening to here

Thanks Roxy for all the work you did on this

bouncy fun bass goodness
This really lifts the spirits. Very infectious. When Roxy drifts in its perfect. The harmony sections are beautifully done. This is gonna be in my head for a while.
Very cool

Brilliant!
Great poppy tune. The soulful mid section is just excellent and the transitions in and out of it work really well. This could be stuck in my head for a while too! Nice one.

An unusual mix of songs and artists
that somehow seems to blend together perfectly. It does have a BW feel in places, but as you say this it all still distinctively Roxylee and particledots, and at their best.

Isn't it fun how.....
you can take two separate ideas, developed at two different times, work with them a bit, and come up with a cohesive result, like this one! Loved it!

My heart is full
This is great.... a match made on earth and in heaven! Fantastic vocals from both of you. I think this one grabs the spirit of Two 4 Summer.... but wait what is this... another PD tune blowing it out... This gets the Cool Kids award and stands alone from any genre or challenge. I am blown away !

Emotional range
I can't say enough about this song. The throwaway Hallmark happiness of the opening bit sets the listener up for the outro of a particularly fine album ('Taking Tiger Mountain' maybe?). Then that shroomy tape-delay section adds a strong note of nagging concern giving way to Roxy's gentle meditation on 'beautiful summertime'. By the time we're back to the happiness, it ain't so happy anymore but I somehow feel wiser....
Kudos for this arresting track, and thanks very much.

phat Summer bass...
This just grabs you right off, has a pop sound, but the bassberry sound has a bit of a Bryn-grin that makes me smile. Roxylee's harmony vox melt me in the sunshine... and as it all melts away, it ricochets back around and becomes a whole new song, a complementary bookend-piece... I love the second one just as much as the first, but for different reasons... the first is very simple but is rich and delicious, the second has a little more complexity and more Roxylee... I think I'll just take them both! Excellent blending of the best of both of you here!

Drakonis

Love the outro
y'know, the stuff that the track starts with....

Ok, that's some strange sequencing, but it's a cool track, in particular with all the multiple sunny vocals.

Happy
I really like the light airy feel of this song, yet there is a lot going on and much detail to listen for, that's cool. Love the more experimental nature set against a more traditional setting, especially the first section, then the morph begins to the thoughtful pulse of the 2nd section, It carries some cool depth and weight. Great exploration.

Nothig like a fine blender at work on a summer's day
this is an extremely cool production - making the best of both of your prodigious talents. The Wilson influence is definitely there - just missing a few farm animals or a bike horn. But that would be too literal - you two make me Smile in your own way.

Very
VERY coool This has some of the best harmonies that I have heard on this site. Nice curve ball at the 2:00 mark moves fro the 'traditional" side into a very cool beat and vocal. This is in my ipod now.
Peace

wonderful arrangement
the opening chord prog appeals to me - classic as well as beachboysish (is that a word?)

that goofy bass is wonderful! :-)

the echoey space out bridge is awesome

the second half opens a tad ominously, but i love how it breaks back into the opening riff to end it - big smile

thanks

summer for two/in the summer
Classic Beachboys feel initialy. I like the vocs and harmonies. The second part kicks in and feels kinda trippy - like summertime in the early 70's maybe :)

Wow .....
2 different songs melded together ... that's amazing ... and it works ! But then again I understand that Bryn is a genius when it comes to this type of thing .... your vocals work great together too .... I also enjoyed the "floatiness" of the vox in spots ... great job!

Arresting Contrasts
...the haunting midsection gives an unexpected shade to the cheerful pop swing of the rest. Love the driving pulse, makes me want to slip on my shades and cruise the California coast!

Roxy's vision was spot on... until I heard the two combined I couldn't have imagined how the two songs could be 'glued together' ...isn't inspiration amazing?

Excellent entry!

best part of this tune is the subtlety all around, brian wilson sure, but bw on xanax. sweet melodies, lots of moving parts, great composition and production, but all subdued, that perfect feeling you get lying on the beach.
