Description
On the 26th December 2010 I uploaded this track looking for a vocalist to finish it off. I sent it to Gaylen last week on the off chance he may be interested at taking a stab at it and low and behold about 12 hours later he sent me the fantastic vocal track you’ll hear here.
I wasn’t expecting him to use the original lyrics I’d supplied back then as I somehow didn’t feel they worked anymore. To my surprise he managed the impossible and made them work way beyond any expectations I had with a bit of clever chopping, moving and changing.
Can’t thank him enough for adding the final ingredient that this song needed. I personally think this song and his vocals were made for each other.
I’d also like to thank Kicbal and Fasteddie for lending their ears to this and supplying some excellent info on equalizing which I’ve tried to apply to this tune. I’ve learnt more in the last few days than I have in the past year about EQ stuff. Although I realise I still have some way to go before I fully get it.
The drums were performed live by my jamming buddy Robin Hagen, which I then transposed into midi notes as the live recording sound was terrible. I painstakingly did this beat by beat on all parts of the kit. Then I discovered that Logic can actually do this automatically by setting up triggers... Oh well, that’s 10 hours I’ll never get back
I hope you enjoy this one.
Here's a link to the original: http://www.macjams.com/song/57920

Heres a few words from the man on vocals, Gaylen:
When Edward asked me to check out this song that he had up since early this year I worried right from the start. I am like the rest of you, even if I dont really LOVE a song I still like it. I have had great fortune to have collabed on some fantastic stuff here so I though my luck was up. I was floored when I heard it and that no one jumped on it. Then I thought, what if he is a jerk and that is why no one worked with him. I tell you I need to play the lottery because he listened to every suggestion I had and it was like working with a pro

Lyrics
Sitting in the clouds
with his head in his hands
He knows theres just to much hate
to be found down on the ground
He only had one job
and it isn’t going to well
To spread his love around
and bring happiness down
oh down

no He didn't get it
he couldn’t do it
but now he’ll make them pay
make them regret it
eyes are twitching
trigger finger itching now
locked and loaded
about to go crazy
crazy

Cupid went postal today
shooting everyone that came his way
kissing every person you meet
people fucking in the streets
it was lust at first sight
a million arrows falling from the sky
an outbreak of love
a pandemic from above
everybody felt that way
no body cared to stop and say
no way

no He didn't get it
he couldn’t do it
but now he’ll make them pay
make them regret it
Eyes are twitching
trigger finger itching now
locked and loaded
about to go crazy
crazy
Yeah Yeah

Dancing through the sky
with his quiver full of love
Blessed with the power
from the gods up above
no longer choosing targets
no longer taking aim
just random blasts of passion
and revenge for all his pain
no He cant give it
he never had it
a loveless life has broken this old romantic
he’s going down
with all guns blazing now
he will kill them with love

Hiding in the heavens
as the world falls apart
pleased by the pain he created
by playing with the heart
he has no thoughts for feelings
and he doesn't care for love
its anarchy and chaos
in his new world torn apart

no He didn't get it
he couldn’t do it
but now he’ll make them pay
make them regret it
eyes are twitching
trigger finger itching now
locked and loaded
about to go crazy
Crazy
Crazy
Crazy
Yeah Yeah

Man, what can I say? This song was ready to sing itself. You put in all the effort. You wrote it and structure it. You even set up some great lyrical lines to work with. I really enjoyed putting in my two cents. I felt spoiled on this one.

Yes sir Ed and Gaylen!
Fantastic vocals Gaylen. Some of the best yet. Kudos!

It looks like you were able to isolate those toms really well Ed. That accents the transitions so nicely.

You really had a pretty stellar mix when I heard it. The small tweaking sounds very awesome. This song turned out great.

I don't really know how much help I was. Sometimes my words of advice are best left alone.

Fantastic my friends!

I like what I hear
My favorite part is still the guitars, all of them. The drums do indeed sound better and more defined. Cool and interesting vocal harmonies. The structure is solid and really helps propel the song forward and provide interest and dynamics. I still think the vocal are a bit loud in the mix and wish the guitar and drums had more presence to further drive the song, but this is a big step forward from what I samples the other night. Nice work. I really don't think you are far behind me as far as reaching a new level in mixing and mastering. It's only been recently that I gained a new understanding of the eq jungle.

Without a doubt this song rocks. Just listening to the music I knew it was gonna be kick ass. Gaylen was drooling! This is one of my top 2 favorite songs! I love your solo and glad you kicked it up a bit. In my opinion you could of went even bigger, but it is great and what do i really know? I love the lyrics(verse 3.wow) and the way Gaylen sung them. It was as if you guys worked side by side. We listened to this one for at least 4 hours of a 6 hour trip we took on Saturday, and never got tired of it! That tells you something! Love it!

ted23 said 2383 days ago (September 16th, 2010)
Hey
It means a lot that you both liked it so much. The though of you both on that road trip makes me smile.
Thanks for you feedback during the mixing too.

Oh man, why did I think your name was Ted?

This rocks in so many ways. The track is terrific, love the guitar playing. Gaylen's vocals & harmonies sound amazing. I would suggest bringing them down, but jut a bit to blend a little better with the music. Awesome lyrics too, poor little cupid, he has such a hard job! Excellent collab guys!

Deep rock
When you read this lyrics on paper the don't seem that great. Gaylen energised them.
The guitar parts came together over a long period of time. This is one tune I didn't rush or force.
Cheers
tempie said 2404 days ago (August 26th, 2010)
Gaylen, dude
you should be fronting a mod rock band. You're an A&R dream. you just NAIL the contemporary sound and aside from that you're the real deal, you've got range and talent. Musically and conceptually, this tune is equally interesting, love the drama, great playing too. really enjoying it.

Cupid Went Postal (Gaylen)
The backer has a very modern sound to it. Some really great guitar lines, and they work well together. Like that palm muted line especially.
Production sounds pro must have been lot of work involved. Gaylen's vocs bring his usual passion and commitment to the lyric, he did a fine job singing.

This song taught me a lot.

crissew said 2404 days ago (August 26th, 2010)
Good work
I really like the interplay of the picked guitar notes palm muted at the beginning of the verses, would have liked to have heard more of that guitar though. I think that type of playing was a nice counter point to Gaylen's sharp phrasing in this. I think either the guitar is a bit quiet in that part or the vocals are a bit loud.

Love the rhythm guitar work in this and how Gaylen complimented but didnt follow it. Great song you two!

The
vocals are superb, great lyrics and what a great voice, fits so well with this song, a great choice to ask Gaylen to sing vocals.
The guitars sound great, I like the muted notes on the verses, a nice touch and I love it when you open up on guitars later on.
Great song Ted and Gaylen, D/L and very much enjoyed.

transpose
The drums were performed live by my jamming buddy Robin Hagen, which I then transposed into midi notes as the live recording sound was terrible. I painstakingly did this beat by beat on all parts of the kit. Then I discovered that Logic can actually do this automatically by setting up triggers... Oh well, that’s 10 hours I’ll never get back.

(i am a rookie at all this...when you mention logic can do this with triggers, do you mean when playing live it can do this, and not after the fact? i have live drums i'd like to convert to midi also, and don't even know where to start. i'll do it the hard way as you did if need be, but i'm not sure even how to do that. anyways, good song.

Really solid, gents....
I like the layered high/low vocals, and the vocal lead has great impact....

Love the guitar playing, too, both the singing lead tone and the crunchier rhythms and riff lines....

I'm impressed at Ted's job on the drum stuff, 'cause I'm just dipping a scared and tentative toe into that part of things, and I was just reading in SOS an hour ago about programming from a live track.... and there you went and did it....
ted23 said 2380 days ago (September 18th, 2010)

Cheers. Well I didn't really programme those drums. I figured out how to do that as soon as I'd finished... Doh!

Cupid Went Postal...........
....I often think how many times a day, week, month,a year does a person have to be f*****d over before they are entitled to go postal.Especially in UK at the moment with the current political situ...I have never been so pissed off....when one group of innocent people have to pay for the cock ups and ineptitude of the people who were supposedly in charge and then after screwing up get off Scot free !!!!! AAAAAAAAghghghgh .....whoops rant over,we'll have the thought police round in a minute.....so obviously this is a song that definitely resonates with me....I can't do this sort of stuff so top marks to you both .Cheers Jarvoid

I
Had the peppers in mind when I wrote the bridge. I'm a huge fan of there's so it's nice to hear.
The solo was a deliberate attempt to go up and down the fret board in a smooth style. Then I layered it by playing it 3 times (one with slight wah)
I like the effect that created

Reggae eh? I'm happy this has been tagged current by a few people. It's definitely a tune that grew organically. It came together slowly but completely unforced for a change.

Emo
Ok, great vocal. Also cool backing parts, but every once in a while I sense a gap. Somewhere around the 2 minute mark I started thinking that the guitars were kinda laidback, while the vocal was going all out. Maybe you can tinker a bit with the guitars, add some screaming in certain parts, fall back more in others?

wow on all levels...
This is incredibly good...
-The lyric idea could be a bestselling sci-fi-Greek-Gods-vs-Humans novel.
-The music starts out having almost a Police-like sound, then descends into driving mayhem alongside the lyrics, perfectly matched, very well written and played.
-The singing, well, it's Gaylen, a great choice for vocalist on this twisted love-story, his forte.
-The mix is great, everything is crisp and clear and balanced and driving hard.

Faved with a vengeance.

Drakonis

Can't get enough
Ed, man I absolutely love this one. I seriously crank it up and rock out everytime I listen (always hit repeat 2-3 times). Seriously, in my top 5. I am a fan. Love it!
