Description
This was a bit more ambient when this was first sent this off to Billy. Billy
reconfigured it and added a rough song sketch, i wrote some more parts and we scraped them. He came up with the idea for the lyrics and the song was again changed.

Over 50 emails and 6 or 7 takes later we decided to bin the third section and try something else. Enough was enough and here it is. Suffice to say this has had a lot of different themes and changes.

Anyway, we both are pleased with most of this, any verdicts?

Billy as you know is a friendly man with great musical talent. Please raise your glasses for a toast to Billy.

From the man himself.....

-------------------------------------------------------------

The lyrics are inspired on the story of Ken Baldwin. I heard the story about one year ago in the program "Radio Lab" in public radio. Check the link below to listen to the story (the episode is worth listening complete, the story is around 0:26). I love that show. Funny.

Lyrics
4 Seconds

Black
Morning sun
Take me out
Nights are holes
In the ground

Hours drop
One by one
Like an expired
Antidote

There's no light
Anymore
Went inside
And closed my mind

*****

Red
Innocent
Hanging gate
Open arms
In the air

Leave the car
Have no coins
That's enough
For my time

Feel the sun
Smell the wind
Count to ten
I'm gone away

*****

See my hands
Release the ground
Something's wrong

It's wrong, is wrong,
is wrong wrong

No more connection to ground
Got the vacuum unplugged
Just four seconds too soon

*****

Fall
Flickers of
Wishes come
See my girl
Growing up

See my friends
Asking why
Say so long
To no one

*****

See my hands
Release the ground
And fly

*****

I was born
And was born
Pay the fine
Overtime

Thanks JD
Tokai sent me the backing track and I was just blown away by the beauty of it. It was a challenge trying to add something and not to spoil it. It's great to know it worked for you.

The vocals are strange even to me. I think I'm a little out of my comfort zone here. Love the mix too. Steve is quickly reaching the pro level.

Hail Steve and Billy
You've been coming up with some great textures lately and this one is loaded with them. Billy voice is working really well within those textures. Very nice.

Textures
The right word. The backing is a fabric woven with intricate guitars and percussion. I added a couple of threads within it. Glad you liked it.

Awesome
Wow, this was really awesome. Billy has a terrific voice & Steve your tracks are always amazing. Diggin' the lyrics now that I'm familiar with the meaning behind them.

I listened to the program, very interesting. Reminds me a bit of the Whitley Strieber podcast, Dreamland.

I enjoy Radio lab, glad to hear it inspired this song. I really enjoyed the spaces in this song, I appreciate the non-pop structure. Vox are tops! Interesting harmonies! props!

I love that show too. I always learn something interesting with them.
The song structure is weird, I'm not sure it has one ;-)
Really happy you enjoyed it.

This is an uncommon song. Steve's original track was full of shades and colors. But the overall vibe was somewhat dark, tragic and inevitable to me. For some reason that story I heard in the radio came as a theme for the music. A story of somebody that returned from the other side. The ending is almost Hollywood and that gives some relief. But there were so many people that didn't enter the water in the perfect angle and may have felt the same that is still tragic no matter the ending. It's like the end of a war: one may survive, one may be victorious, but the whole experience still leaves a bitter taste impossible to swallow.
While discussing the different alternatives with Steve during the process of making the song we were a little bit self conscious that this would not be an easy listening song. But it developed into this and we eventually just hoped you guys liked it.
A note: Steve is on vacation starting today, so I'm glad I'll be reading and responding to your comments.

I'm really impressed by this and Kullu Haze -- both on my Hit Parade. You guys are doing some fine work. The vocals here have a beauty about them. Great work with he lyrics also. One of Steve's most mysterious sounding pieces (assuming he wrote all the music). I didn't quite get the dissonance, but since this went through so many iterations, I can imagine that it served a purpose early on. I also love the open space that I know Steve feels is vital. Came across spectacularly here. Hat's off. Fantastic ending. Love it.

Steve made all the music. He tried and encouraged me to contribute something more than vocals, but I couldn't add anything more to his art without ruining it.

atmosphere is dark enough but not too much; which is cool. nice guitar work & the drums sound real. vocals are cool as well. i'm listening unfortunately through my macbook's tiny speakers so i'm sure im missing out on a lot of the nuances in the recording. sounds great nonetheless.

dark dreaming
Cool song art. Looks like a dark dream of a Dali painting. I like the dreamy quality of the song, the Pink Floyd airiness, the sense of spacious drama of Moody Blues. Nice drumming. But the highlight is the vocals and spacial washes that leave room to fill with unhurried imagination.

One can hear the work and effort that went into this. A surreal landscape of soothing sonics anchored by Billy's terrific vocal. I too appreciate the the non structure (as opposed to a traditional Pop tune format). It leaves it open, interpretive and wonderfully ambient. The picture rules.

Yeah, it took a while and some head scratching to get it done. A lot of auto critic too; perhaps too much (at least from my side).
That picture is awesome: Steve can see hidden images in common things.

I really like the sound choices, they are working together well. Stream of conciousness style lyrics are well sung against the backer.
Great production. My only nit is that at 0:34 the synth pad and melody seem to be at odds, but it's probably just me as no one else has commented on it.

I think the level of the vocals is not high enough to clearly mark the chord change. It should sound like around 1:22. That's a good one. I think we'll need to adjust the vox at that point if we ever remix the song.
Thanks a lot for stopping by.

Thanks for the download man. I know what a download from you mean (did you buy a new disk ;-).
In the middle of the many comes and goes with Steve I slowly realized this was a weird song (you, such a nice person, used the euphemism innovative for that ;-). It may take some effort to listen so I really appreciate taking the time. The weirdest thing about the song is that the more I listen to it the more I like it. I hope it happens to you too.
Thanks a lot Jack for your words.

Steve,
The sound bed is excellent. This is followed by fitting vocals, but they sound a little laid back and thin to me, almost like backing vocals, in fact the backing vocals sound and sit exactly like the foreground vocals. Maybe just double up the lead vocal?? Excellent everywhere else. Great song.

No lead vox
Well, that was the idea. It's a duet. I tried making one louder but I missed the other. They are also coming from a depressed guy, so yeah they are kinda weak, thin and even broken. But it's by design; in some strange way I'm glad you said that. I told you the song was strange ;-)
Steve's track is full of fine artisan details, movement and interwoven lines. He's upon a different sound and I think he's finding something.
Thanks Stephen for the honest comment.

The harmonies in the chorus are uncommon (coming from me): the back vox isn't precisely following the lead. Those things happened early while trying different melodies and then playing them in pairs just to see what happened and some of them worked fine. It was a complete accident (but I'll keep using the technique ;-).
Steve's tracks have so much space they create their own world (you sent me to the dictionary for 'brooding' btw).
Thanks for the nice words Moviz.
