Neverland 2010 (with Pie)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is a completely new arrangement and mix of the first song Matt and I ever officially did together as a band, back in 2006 (the original version of Neverland is here).

When we first posted it, I tortured Pie making him give feedback on many, many mixes and he was wonderful about it, so it seemed natural that when we wanted to improve Neverland this time around, that we ask Pie to contribute, which he very wonderfully did by adding some BAD ASS electric guitar to the bridge, which we then exploited and used on the outro as well. He can't sue us. We live in another country.

Thank you, Pie.

A lot has changed on this version, but I chose not to resing the vocal track, partially because I wasn't a very confident singer four years ago and I literally don't use this voice when I sing anymore (but it suits the song). Let us know what you think about this choice as well as anything else you think we should consider for the album version.

We're really happy to be sharing something with you guys. Both Matt and I miss this place.

Lyrics
Victoria's time has passed us by
no need to keep one eye on the sky.
Maybe that book
always had it right.
When it's time to grow up,
love will always fly.

If you'd told me
all you were offering
was a trip to Neverland
I'd have stayed on the ground.

You measured me for a hollow tree,
an empty doorway,
perfect for me.
No matter how I bent,
the fit was never right.
The risk in trust is abandonment.

If you'd told me
all you were offering
was a trip to Neverland,
I'd have stayed on the ground

I do believe in fairies x4
I believed in you.

If you'd told me
all you were offering
was a trip to Neverland
I would have stayed on the ground.

If you'd told me
(fly away)
If you'd told me.
(the fit was never right)
was a trip to Neverland.

There's a definite lack ...
.. of firsties competitors these days :)

Great to hear you back here Lisa (and Matt too of course). I really thought this might be a new vocal from you - it's just so commanding (in a good way) here. Seems to be a totally new sound ....... then again, it's been a while ;)

The mix is really exceptional.

Cheers from Oz!

I do believe in firsties....
It is, however, in the broad and treacherous category of 'deeply unfair' to post a song that demands a firsties competition while I am off on vacation...

There will, of course, have to be retribution, probably of the petty and small minded variety. It's what I do best....
jiguma said 2433 days ago (August 27th, 2010)
Bloody excellent!
Love your up-front vocal Lisa. The vocal track might be the same, but the position in the mix seems much better in this version. Backing is superb Matt - Pie is brilliant (but we all knew that).

Lisa, this is the best your voice has ever sounded - so clear and close.

Definite album ready - fantastic mix. Best MJ post all year!

LOVE IT!
Neil

You Do Realize...
...that it's August and not halfway through the first day of January, Neil, right?

I think we may need to frame this comment coming from you. Thank you very much. I'm a little floored. The part about Pie being brilliant is a given, I agree. The man is a god.

Classic
Love everything about this. My only slight complaint is that I might mix up the jangly panned guitar part that permeates the verses, or not, the jury is still out on that one. That bridge is wicked! The mix is fantastic. It's great to hear a new version from you guys! You guys need to get your album out ASAP!

Jury's Out
Glad you like it. The guitar part on the verse is something that got mentioned the first time around, too, and it was interesting that people were saying the same kind of thing as you, Adam, that they were on the fence about it. I've listened to the song so long with it in it, now, that it would sound nekkid without it.

Thanks so much for always being so supportive of us, but always being willing to give some constructive criticism at the same time.

good to hear your voice again. You should keep keeping on because you never know when your mojo will go AWOL.

Love this tune. Musically, very interesting things going on.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy...
Always one of my favorites from you guys. Pie certainly did a cool job with it.

I think it's a good move not to rerecord the vocals on this one. First, you did an excellent job (naturally), but secondly, you voice here has a softness and innocence that really enhances the lyrics of the song. In the millions of years that have passed since you recorded this, your voice has gained a new strength and confidence, which I think would take the underlying meaning of the song in a totally different direction, at least as I hear it.

I hope this means that the long drought is waning and there might be more in the way of new music coming our way....

A Million Years
Thanks Joe, you're dead on with the reason that I think it's best not to re-record the vocal. I don't think I could sing these words with the same underlying innocence anymore. I agree that Pie and Matt killed with the new stuff on this.

The long drought should be waning. Both of us have lighter workloads this year, and we already have one 85% finished, so hopefully will be posting that soon.

Still orbiting
I was afraid this thing fell out of the sky.

This is excellent, of course. Anything created by the three of you is bound to be. The guitar is amazing, and perfectly fits the rest of the tune. The production is enviably clear and rich, and Lisa's voice sounds gorgeous--regardless of when it was recorded. Welcome back, wanderers.

Hiya John! I agree Pie is DELICIOUS! We're grateful to him for his additions to this track and I'm personally grateful for all the lessons he's given me over the years on this whole songwriting/sound-engineering stuff (although the improvements here are 100% a Matt deal).

Thanks for stopping by. You're an honorary Orbiter.

It's so good...
...that it doesn't have parts anymore....

You know, like, I'm listening to it to make comments about "this is cool about the bass" and "this is cool about the vocal" but I keep forgetting to listen like that because it's a nice, seamless whole now.... I keep getting to the end of the song having forgotten to listen with critical ears... Which is a shame, because my critical comments are important and all mortals should take them very seriously...

This is a wonderful mix, and it's a rare case of a wonderful mix that makes the song sound simpler, more focused and more impactful... One ends up hearing the song and not the mix, unless one is being a troublemaker...

Whatever the heck I wrote above notwithstanding, I think the bass tone on this thing IS wonderful... And Pie's guitar melds with the general Orbital synthiness perfectly, in the manner of Manzanera with Roxy Music...

I also love your singing on this (he said, addressing Lisa).... Has that ledeb breathiness just a bit, but also a nice confidence and sturdy pitch, and good presence in the mix... I have always loved and appreciated that you have enough confidence in your lyrics that you don't over-emote or dramatize your delivery... I like the lyrics, too... still... Mind you, I sometimes think that there's one slice of your life that ALL your songs are about, did one but have the answer key, but you translate that slice into song very well, and I probably almost do the same thing myself.... Except I have two or maybe three slices.... Anyway, YOUR slices all have this touch of fey genius that's pretty compelling... And it's always, always, always good to be reminded that you're in this world....

You two make a god and interesting team....

The Orbiting said 2430 days ago (August 31st, 2010)
Thanks for calling us out as
gods Ed! Though I'm sure you meant good, feels good to have moments of god-likedness! I'm glad the mix felt like a song to you. For me, it's hard to separate the parts and hard to know what's good aside from the moments in the song I love. I recall David Gilmour lamenting that he never had the experience of placing Dark Side of the Moon on his turntable, putting on his headphones and hearing for the first time what was to become a seminal experience, all because of how close he was to the music. Not that I'm comparing us to Floyd, at all, it's just I guess I guess it's the musicians' curse. We don't get to hear it like the audience does, ever. So thanks for being such an awesome listener over our years. You and the other MacJammers have provided us so much help and advice.

BTW, I'm mixing up the newest Orbiting jam as we speak and all I can think of is what an incredible job I have giving background to Lisa's voice. I love it and wouldn't trade with anyone. Except maybe David Gilmour. He has a lot of guitars.

About bloody time :-)
Wow. I remember recording this little guitar part what must be two years ago. I think I nagged Lisa about it a year ago and here we are today listening to the finished mix. Matt - you've done an excellent job with this. Lisa - you're vox have never sounded this good. And as for my guitars? Well, the key was not to do too much. Keep it simple and don't get in the way of the song. Really, this is Matt and Lisa's thing and I'm just glad I could tag along for the ride (on their coat tails). May be I'll dust off ProTools again.

Loe the tone
you have in this song. Really nice airy sound. The only thing I can come up with on this song is that the vocal stays at about the same vocal range throughout the song. i think if you took the vocal up at dramatic emotional points in the song, it would deliver more impact. Sounds like your voice could go up substatially from where you are singing in this song. Very pretty melody and I agree, the tone of your voice is vulnerable and intimate which works well. The backer is rich and well produced. Enjoyed it!
