NO RELIEF IN SIGHT

Description
"No Relief" is a reggae-inspired song, said (by others we should add) to be reminiscent of the Police. This version is an "in the studio" version featuring Pete and Neil only, but moves as if the whole band was playing.
Lyrically, this was inspired by a TV documentary on a peripheral member of the British royal family - the words ended up having little to do with the person, but took a direction of their own.

Live drums by Peter Reid - using Roland v-drums.

This is a PBGB song - I posted in my name because I thought I might get a bit more exposure.

My band's new album "Transitions" is here:

Lyrics
No Relief In Sight
©2010 Neil Porter

There’s a hole in the roof
Where the rain gets in
Can’t get to sleep at night
A hole in my heart
Where the pain gets in
And there’s no relief in sight
He’s got a hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight
A hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight

The ground’s been shaking
Things are not the same
Mama this can’t be right
The earth’s been quaking
Might do it again
Mama please put this right
He’s got a hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight
A hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight

You get used to the high life
Ride high in the saddle
And you have a good time
Middle of the lake
Without any paddle
Just have a good time

Hold that rhythm
Hold it tight
Don’t turn it off
Til the time is right
Don’t stop shaking
Shake it right
Shake it, shake it
All through the night
He’s got a hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight
A hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight

Never believed in Heaven
Didn’t believe a lot
Never did notice
The warning sign
Didn’t hear the warning shot
He’s got a hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight
A hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight

You get used to the high life
Ride high in the saddle
And you have a good time
Middle of the lake
Without any paddle
Just have a good time

Neil first time first
Yeah, agree kind of Police. More like Dylan meets the Police, which is a very interesting combo, but works on many levels. PROduction here, too.

Love this.

You get the firsties award! It's been a bit of a marathon effort getting this CD finished, and is a real relief to have finally posted it and started to advertise it to the wider world.
Dylan meets Police - I kind of like that.
Cheers from Oz, and thanks a lot for taking time to have a listen.

funkalicious reggae
This has a very nice strut & swagger to it. Production sounds spot on, to me.

We had fun doing this - a little different to our live version, but you get the drift from this.

The words
The words for this came about in a weird way. I was watching a documentary on Tony Armstrong-Jones who is a photographer who was married to Princess Margaret (sister of Queen Elizabeth). It struck me that he, despite his financial and social status, was basically a bit of a sad case. The rest of the words flowed and then I realised it wasn't just about T.A-J after all. I like it when lyrics do that when you're writing them.
Thanks for listening and leaving a comment.

Great track Neil
Love the feel, but the lyrics and vox, including harmonies are just killer. Very catchy tune and ultimately listenable. Needs to be on your next CD, it's very, very good.

Thanks Ed!
I've been encouraged of late, mainly by Pete, our drummer, to sing more in my upper register that you hear here. It's an interesting move because I'm finding that I have significantly more power in the higher range. It's on PBGB's current CD, and I probably should have loaded it onto the PBGB page - but I was worried it might get overlooked there.
Thanks for taking the time to listen and leave a comment Ed - much appreciated.
Hope you are doing well.
Cheers from the seriously Deep South!

Fantastic
You definitely captured the reggae feel--this is great stuff! It had sort of an "I Shot the Sheriff" Eric Clapton feel, which is great. I really like the lyrics, too--perfect fit for the music. Man, everybody is just uploading awesome stuff today . . . must be something in the water????? :)

Southern fried reggae! Great pre-chorus,

He’s got a hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight
A hole in his heart
And there’s no relief in sight

Add a slide guitar and you'll have that missing Little Feat song!
Great production and mix!

Yay!
I doubt there's a bigger Police fan on this site than me (Joe might try to fist fight me for it) and I agree with the comparison. What's interesting is the particular song it evokes for me is Hole in My Life, which is funny given the lyrics here.

Fabulous, and I love it that you're playing with co-conspirators live now, Neil.

Your relentless drive....
...towards having impactful, in-yer-face, mixes continues....

The vocal is right there up front, or should I say, 'vocals'.... Not obscured by anything else going on in the song... Lots of space in the arrangement and the mix, which is certainly emblematic of the Police, though the pitch of the vocals puts in another territory to my ears...

I really like the growl of the bass, coupled with the spaces in the phrasing, and what I'm taking to be some Telecaster playing is also a treat...

I'm flat out envious of your productivity, Neil....

Nothing like a hole in the heart
Has a nice reggae feel. Your voice has a Knack for this style of music. The guitars sound crisp and the drums and bass carry the tune well. Nice breaks with an intro into a sweet solo. Maybe it's my woofer but the bass sounds like it could come down just a tad. Thanks for sharing.

ps Not sure that I get the Police reference ,but then to be fair they were never a great favourite of mine. So that's okay, I just like this.

Love the drum & guitar dynamics.
Take it harder, get Police. Jazzier, get G-Dead tunes like Row Jimmy Row" (but in a blues vs. major key), or "Estimated Prophet" (but without the alternating 6 & 7 -beat measure math). I double-love Peter's drums and how they, and the guitars, complement the up- and downbeats. Your words and lyrics work for me. Was gonna download it but it's on the album -- THANKS!
