You Know You've Got The Blues

Description
A day at home alone. And here is the result - a bluesy acoustic song. Funny how, sometimes, these things come together rather quickly. I hope you enjoy this laid-back tune.

Guitars, harmonica, keyboard bass, and vocal: me
Drums: loops

Lyrics
Sometimes you win
Sometimes you lose.
Sometimes you don't even know
What to choose.

refrain:
That's when you know
You've got the blues...

Sometimes you're hot
Sometimes you're not.
Sometimes you don't even
Care what you got.
-refrain

Ohh, pretty baby, that's when
You've got the blues.

Sometimes you see
Sometimes you can't.
Sometimes you don't even
Turn on the lamp.
-refrain

Sometimes you're here
Sometimes you're there.
Sometimes you don't even
Care where.
-refrain

Ohh, pretty baby, that's when
You've got the blues.

Sometimes you slip
Sometimes you slide.
Sometimes you don't even
Try to hide.
-refrain

Sometimes you stand
Sometimes you fall.
Sometimes you don't even
Care at all.
-refrain

Ohh, pretty baby, that's when
You've got the blues.

That's on Jack, that's on!
I enjoyed the syncopated rhythm backing you up on on this and that was just for starters! The way you extended the phrases in your vocal was fantastic--just excellent how this all comes together Jack....and has a "live performance" aura about it. I don't know how you do it! Kudos for this--great work!

Michael....
I don't know. Just a lucky swing on my part. I really mean that. Cause I don't have a real method. A little free time and a little luck. But I am appreciative of your comment on the vocal. That is the one part I did work on. ;-) ... still luck.

Thanks much,
D

For a one day effort ...
.... this is a wonder. Very smooth sound, nice mix good playin' and singin', and a solid feel. Very easy to listen to. Jack - sounds like you've moved a long way in your production since last time I listened - this sounds great. No nits!
Really nice post.

jd, nice to see you
... so glad to know you like this one. I love taking out my acoustic and playing around with 3 chord blues things. It seems to run out of possibilities. Thanks much for stopping in and listening... and for the generous comments.

One of your best Jack
Love the feel and especially the slide guitar. Overall back track is outstanding, and the lyrics and vox are perfect for the song. Way to go Jack,

Well, Ed...
... coming from an old pro like you, your comments are indeed fine to read. Glad you like the slide. I was going to go with some electric licks and then thought the slide would fit better. I still like the idea of some electric licks interspersed here and there. Thanks much, and hang it there good buddy.

laid back and fun...
Maybe they'll put that on my headstone? ;-)

It was a fun song to make. A little longer than one evening. I came up with the chord - melody idea Fr. evening. Saturday afternoon I sat down and the thing just came together. I usually cringe at writing lyrics, but these came pretty easily as to the repetitive structure of it all. Glad you liked it and thanks for stopping in again.

You Know You've Got The Blues
The slick harp and slide guitar create a really nice texture. Your vocal works great for this laid back blues. Production sounds great! Hard to believe this is just one day of effort.

Dadai.2 said 2543 days ago (August 30th, 2010)
a one day thing...
You know, if you think about it, this is a very simple song. Lyrics almost write themselves because of the repetitive structure. Three chord blues progression. Slide an harp, again just simple adds. The real luck was very quickly finding the drum loops to give this thing some funky syncopation. And what really helps in the production is ChannelStrip. That is the best piece of music software I have purchased. It very easily mixes tracks and then the whole song without needing any real mixing skills except an ear to hear.

Thanks much Dave for stopping in and giving this a listen.

Your track just restored my faith that tis still out there FUCK THE LABELS LOL

actually...
the spot is just near or in Brandon on the Dingle... near Cloghane... next to Brandon Pier, and as I remember a pub under the name of Murphy's. I loved it there. My wife and I spent a week there just enjoying walking all around. My mom and her side of the family are the one with the Irish roots, which has given me a large soft spot for that lovely island and people.

I agree about so much of the music out there. In fact, it is why I record my own music and listen to music at MJ...

I gotta plan another trip there. Thanks Florry. Bless you and your music.

Jack
