He's a Hard Workin' Cowboy - An Old Saddle Tramp - with davisamerica2

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is a redo of the old style Traditional Western Cowboy song I posted last week, asking for feedback on how to improve the song. Well I got some great feedback and took it to heart.

One of the comments was from Jack Hemby ( davisamerica ). He suggested strongly that I contact Terry Pearson, ( davisamerica2 ) about working on the song with me as a collaboration. So I got on the phone, called Terry and told him what was going on. After he listened to the song he said he'd love to work on it with me.

So while Terry was working up some fantastic harmony parts to go along with the ones I'd done, I went to work on incorporating some of the excellent suggestions I'd received on how to improve the song. I've rework the Piano, Acoustic Guitar parts, Strings section, Bass line, and Drums. In other words there is nothing in this version that is the same as the version I posted last week.
I also went through all of the vocal and harmony parts in this version to correct timing errors and levels. I really wanted this one to be special, so I tried hard to make it that way, with Terry's help.

So as you'll soon hear, for the last 5 days, since posting the "new" version, Terry and I have been working hard to really make this song special.

Terry and I hope you enjoy the fruits of our collective efforts, it is a labor of love.

Ed

VERSE 1
As a young man he learned, how to rope and to ride
His father had taught him, the meaning of pride
He learned how to work, and he learned how to sweat
He learned about truth, and promises kept

CHORUS 1
He's a hard workin' cowboy, an old saddle tramp
With a bedroll and saddle, he makes up his camp
He's a hard workin' cowboy, who's time is long past
He'll work them old doggies, till he breathes his last.

VERSE 2
He once loved a woman, filled with desire
A pretty young lady, with eyes full of fire
But the call of the saddle, he could not ignore
When she finally left him, he rode all the more

CHORUS 2
He's a hard workin' cowboy, an old saddle tramp
With a bedroll and saddle, he makes up his camp
He's a hard workin' cowboy, who lives in the past,
But he'll work them old doggies, till he breathes his last.

VERSE 3
He knows the times come, to take his last ride
So he cinches his saddle, and mounts up with pride
He watches the young man, who'll soon take his place
With the wisdom of age, etched on his face

Bridge
Sometimes when a man, is stuck in the past
Has nothing to show, nothing that lasts
But his time has come, to count up the cost
For the choices he's made, the love that he lost

FINAL CHORUS
He's a hard workin' cowboy, just an old saddle tramp
But the fires gone out, and he's breakin up camp
He's a hard workin' cowboy, who's given his best
For him the rides over, at last he can rest

Tag Line:
Yeah - for him the rides over, at last he can rest

I thought I did this already,
But I guess I didn't hit the post button.

Glad you like the changes Dave. We put a lot of work into this over the last few day and I think it paid off. Terry's additional harmonies and the ooh parts made a big difference I think. There's still more I could do to make it better, but I'm gonna leave it rest for a while and come back to it another day.

Thanks for listening, again, and for the great comments.

Testimonial
This is dreamier. Maybe sweeter, sadder. Very enjoyable. its nice to have several arrangements to present on the upcoming EP. Wonderful that others wanted to continue developing the song, what a testimony to both MJ and your music. I like the straightforward non-nostalgic original, too.

Thank you Tobin
I took you comment about the piano part to hear and redid it for this version. I may have over done it a little here, but everything is fixable if you want to take the time and effort.

Very glad you like this one, and the other, although it does require me to decide later on down the line on which to use.

Thanks for listening again my friend, and the great comments both on this one and the last.

Sabble sores in the head,
that's a new one on me Terry. I am honored that you came over to work on this one. It's a lot better song with the two of us on it than it would have ever been with me working on it alone. I really am glad we did this one together my friend.

I wrote this one in 1990 just to see if I could, but up until now I've never done a recording of it I was content with. this one is a keeper I think, at least until I learn a lot more about this style of music.

Classic, as in old fashioned. That's a great compliment my friend since that were this song was aimed. I was trying for the old "Sons of the Pioneers" sound, and while it's similar, it could never measure up to the standards set by those gentlemen. They were indeed, the genuine article, and nobody even comes close to them when it comes to this kind of harmony singing. They were the best there ever was.

Thanks agin for listening Terry, Terry Pearson and I appreciate it, and the very kind words you left us on the song.

Yeah, ole Terry nailed it all right. On top of the harmonies behind me he also introduce the oohs between the verses. Once I had those, I added two of my own harmonies to them and with 4 part harmony going on in the oohs it sounded really great.

Taking the other suggestions to heart, I redid every track on this thing except the lead vocal. Now it sounds much smoother, and better, I think.

Thanks again for coming back for a second listen Jim, and for the very kind words. Terry and I really appreciate that.

Hey there Tim
Glad to see you back man, we missed you around here.

Thanks for coming to listen, and I'm sure Jack appreciates the great comment.

Only thing is, it was Terry Pearson who sang on this, not Jack. That said, it was Jack's idea for me to contact Terry about working with me on the song, and for that stroke of genius, I really want to thank Jack.

None the less, Terry and I are sure glad you enjoyed the song. With the extra harmonies and the oohs Terry put down for it it really made a difference. It inspired me to redo all the tracks except the main vocal and add two more harmony parts to the oohs that Terry did. It really filled the song up and made it a lot better IMO.

Thanks for listening, and the kind words. Like I said, it's really good to have you back.

YOU are a hard-working cowboy
I didn't hear the earlier version Ed but this one is terrific. All your music and vocals are heightened so nicely by Terry's harmonies; it's like adding a bit of salt to those beans ;-)
And your lyric tells that ultimately-sad-but-really-just-the-way-things-are kind of story as naturally as falling off a horse.

I don't know much...
about country music, but I know I like this! This seems to me to be the Real Deal, and I love the mood you create. Love the harmonies too. And the lyrics; great job here by all!

Thanks Clark
Glad you enjoyed the song. This version has the added harmonies from davisamerica2, which made a lot of difference in the song. Because Terry was interested in doing those harmonies, I gave the song a complete reworking, including adding two more of my own harmony parts on top of Terry's and the ones that were on the original version.

Thanks for stopping to listen Clark, and the kind words you left behind for Terry and I, it is appreciated.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Oh man...
... how sweet it is to hear your voice and that 'old country' feel of your songs again! Killer harmonies from Sir Terry. You've both done a wonderful job here. :)

Thank you Yeman
I'm glad you enjoyed the song my friend. Terry did do a wonderful job on his harmony parts. He did so good that it inspired me to do 2 more on top of the 2 I already had on this song. We ended up with 4 part harmony on the verses and 5 part on the chorus and ending.

Thanks for stopping to listen and leave the kind words behind for me and Terry, we really appreciate that.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Sweet Harmonies
You have captured the cowboy flair flawlessly.
The picture fits like an old saddle.
The only thing I hear that could use improvement is the drum track. A bit repetitious.

:: Outstanding ::

Hi Steve
Glad you liked how the song came out my friend. Terry's additional harmony parts on top of mine made a lot of difference in this song. Once he got involved, I went through every track and reworked it. As for the drums, I intentionally left them bone simple as they most likely would have been done back in the 40's and 50's. I also didn't want the drums to interfere with the rest of the music and harmony parts.

I could be wrong there, but that was the way I perceived the song should sound for it to be somewhat historically accurate.

Thanks for listening, and the great comments Steve, it is appreciated.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Thanks, Terry...
For the harmony, and the reminder to revisit an ol' chestnut from brother Ed. It's pretty amazing how we can still hang out with Ed...he's still alive...here.
