Tailpipe

Description
This is the flip side to rink rats. Or maybe rink rats is the flip side to this. Another exuberant pop tune about riding around with girls. I just got back from a great vacation, lots of surfing and fishing and mountain biking and there's not much better than living in the moment, so easy when you're sixteen, takes a bit more effort when you're 40. But worth it. Anyway lyrically this is another true one, I missed a lot of school my senior year riding around with my girlfriend (older and out of school), cruising the park, whatever. Didn't ever miss it (school) and i've got some great memories (and pop tune subject matter).

Lyrics
i'll pick you up at the end of the block
by the development sign
you'll be smoking camel lights, right?
hop up behind me
it feels so fine
your thumbs in my belt loops
your short shorts and your hiking boots

don't burn your leg on the tailpipe honey
don't burn your leg on the tailpipe
that thing gets hot
when we ride a lot
so don't burn your leg on the tailpipe

i'll drive us down to the city park
we'll ride around past the cholos and their hot cars
we'll find a place, put the bike on the ground
and lay ourselves down
and commence to roll around and around

don't burn your leg on the tailpipe honey
don't burn your leg on the tailpipe
that thing gets hot
when we ride a lot
so don't burn your leg on the tailpipe

Tailpipe
Too much fun. That low bass note on the verse is wild. Good chorus.

it's all
about fun. thanks for the listen man. very few people play those open bass notes anymore, everybody has to be picking like flea. sometimes it's good to just twang a string and let it fill the room. also a good cure for chest congestion.

This song
made me instantly smile!

Very cool song man. I love the chorus. Had me singing along before the end of the song.

I think that everybody has a scar from a hot tail pipe don't they? I know I do.

Cool song man.

i have the same reaction to your tunes
i was trying for that simple early who type hook on the chorus, something a drummer could drink himself to death to. thanks for the listen man glad you liked it. i have to get over and listen to The Wraith, just sounds like a 40oz of badass.

Tailpipe
Great hook! I can relate, I got busted a couple of times riding my dirt bikes to and around public parks - had my HS girlfriend with me on a number of occasions too. Love that rumbling bass, and the trebly clean guitar sounds are great contrast.

Very Cool
Haven't reached 40 yet, but man what I wouldn't do to be 16 again! What a great tune, you have a terrific sound. Love the track, and the vocals & lyrics rock! "And you walk away..." Awesome part!!!

40
is very cool, believe it or not. 16 was fun, but one of those things where you think 'it was fun to do it once, don't know if i'd do it again' lol. glad you liked the 'walk away' part that's my favorite.

cool
Great catchy singalong chorus, the double entendre is hilarious,
a lot of fun.
the quirky slightly dissonant touches are always enjoyed.
I can enjoy vicariously living the high school life of a "cool kid" instead of a nerdy band geek. LOL!

double entendre? where?
I was wondering when that would come up lol. I was second chair trumpet in middle school but then I beat up the first chair at recess and that was that. He thought I said something about his mother. Glad you enjoyed it man thanks for the listen!

it's either fantasy summer

Burning hot
You have a way with putting it up a notch, fun and groovin and the memories are flowing! Wow at the end there you could have started another song and it would have been progressive groove funk! excellent song!

Garageband
Dude welcome back. Nice to see that Hurricane Earl didn't blow any of that Tempie magic away. This is garageband music done tight 'n' right. Love that snare, the bridge is fantastic and your vox on the chorus are just perfect man.
Great tune. Pure tempie. Love that outro strummin'

nah earl was a wuss
glad you picked up on the garage band feel, i was really going for that, especially in the chorus, just a bunch of kids shouting their hearts out. all my multiple teenage personalities.

Tailpipe
This not only looks back on the things you did when you were 16, but it's stylistic of some of the bands that were big then. You know who I'm talking about.

Good old school skater pop sensibility.

I'm especially fond of the "walk away" part. Love the anticipation you build just keeping us hanging, waiting... Nice.

Chicago?
you know you made a comment the other day about madonna a la borderline days and i've been hankering for some lucky star ever since. what a great album, from the cover to the tunes. simple, and sexy and punk at the same time, not that glossy airbrushed sexy we've got today but sweaty smelly morning sex sexy.

TOP HIT! Indelible imagery! Here! Now! Free!
What a GREAT lyrical hook. It's funny how so much of what you do comes from these little images that explode with indelible imagery. You're my hero, dang it! That quick goofy/angular/striated ending almost reminds me somehow of Alice Cooper's band -- underrated, I swear to you. I can see them doing that live, going into some kind of jam. Seriously, I don't know where that came from but there it is.

The guitar
sound on the first part of the chorus makes me want to rock out on stage. Like a less whimsical Dead Milkmen track. the organ/acoustic part is sublime. I want more of it.

that's my favorite kind of chorus...
not saying this is what actually happens, but I can IMAGINE that when i record that kind of chorus i play it way past the end of the song, pretending that it's an extended jam for a billion screaming tempie fans (all girls, in hooters hot pants).

what is that subsonic rumble
in the verses! That may be the lowest note I've ever heard in a song that involves motorcycles--maybe it's the muffler roar? Or a 5-string bass?

Ecstatic bittersweet nostalgia as always.... The bridge makes this tune, imho. And I really like the outro. All under 3 min!
