Preying On My Mind

Description
Here’s one I put up the second week I was on here and took down again very quickly for a re think. I guess everyone at some time has had this happen to them. Some people stay friends for life. Some you don’t see for years but when you do meet up it’s as if you only met the previous week. Then there are the others. The ones you were once really close friends with who when you meet again you find you’ve both changed beyond recognition.

You now have nothing in common and although you are all smiles on the surface inside you know this is the last time you will meet up. It’s sad but inevitable in some cases. Happened to me last summer and here’s the song! Dug out some more ethnic beats to base this one around as they reminded me of a heart and friendships that have died can be heartbreaking.

Lyrics
Preying on My Mind

Couldn’t believe the last time we met
The change that’s overcome you
Emotionally you’ve withered away
And died

Oh you’ve been preying on my mind

You used to be such a good friend
Now we’ve nothing left to say
Physically you’re in better shape
Than me

Oh you’ve preying on my mind

And it’s not like we’ve grown up
We’ve simply grown apart
Our friendship has just
Withered away

And it makes me feel so sad inside
I can’t deny that time has lied
I wish we still
Had something to say

You don't have any kids
But I don’t think that’s the reason
You’ve just lost your ability to
Laugh anymore

Oh you’ve been preying on my mind

I feel the sadness
Do you feel it to

Oh you’ve been preying on my mind

love the californian hippie trail sound to this. you always manage to create such a catchy one line hook in your vocal. love the beat running through this.

POMM
Cheers Julian, hope the chorus doesn't "prey on your mind" too much, (or perhaps I do!)

That could be me on the left
and I had a reunion like you describe with a childhood friend. Wondered why we'd been friends. Sad, isn't it?
Nice track though. Thanks.

Nice
Really feeling your lyrics. Excellent percussion and guitars remind me of early primal scream.
Really cool piece that everyone can relate to.

Ethnic tonalities
That turkish (?) scale clashes with your guitar tuning, but I'll consider that the added spice that brings this track to life. Very nice.

That you, Bob?
Interesting sound, all driven by a catchy, well structured rhythm, supported by what sounds like a Rolf Harris wobbleboard. Sounds like the sort of situation/treatment/style of good old Bobby Dylan in recent years, including to some extent, the vocals? Meant as a compliment, in case your not a Dylan fan!

It is sad how people get disillusioned. Should've joined MacJams! Now there's a group of people who are still full of wonder and fun!

Very trippy
and Dylanesque ( although my Dylan of choice is a certain Roundabout dwelling hippy rabbit ).Where did you get the wobble board sound from?.......ah ,unless of course it was a ,er,wobble board.

Nice One Mark,pretty damned cool.

Cheers

Eastern and Cetic vibes with a little bit of Stone Roses, an interesting combination. I am liking those harmonies. Cool song.

Bonzoid!
this has all the trappings of quirky englishness. Now being a welshie, that would normally grate, but this works really well!! I had the misfortune to have to sit through an evening of Roy Harper and this is miles better.

Roy Harper!
This is so strange, I have to butt-in: I almost mentioned how this reminds me of a great, forgotten talent, Roy Harper. I just didn't think anyone would remember him. I loved his album, "When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease." Sorry Smokey! And again (because I'm writing this AFTER my comment below): Great tune!

Reality bites.
I have experienced things along the lines of this storyline. And all you can do is acknowledge the current reality, much as it feels like a loss. Musically, this befits the so-called freakfolk sub-genre that's risen in the indie ranks in the last few years. That's a good thing. Great song.

Grower
An interesting mix of instruments in terms of the arrangement and it does seem to blend well with the lyrics. I would have inevitably looked for rhymes rather than blank verse (because it really is easier, just more restrictive and it's so difficult to avoid accidental rhymes or half rhymes). I get the feeling this is a song that will be more of a grower than providing instant impact, especially as the lyrics are quite dark and intense and need more consideration. Tom
