Just a Gigolo

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
You guys--I think there is a character just like the bozo I portray in this song in all of us (common, you know it!) "Just a Gigolo" was penned in 1928 by an Austrian composer, Leonello Casucc, and adapted by songwriter Irving ("Tea for Two") Caesar in 1929 and is currently in the public domain. It was also performed by the great Louis Prima and David Lee Roth did a cover of Louis Prima's version in the 1980s.

Thanks for checking out this mess and may you all find a wallet on the sidewalk this week with no ID in it and $10,000 in cash.

All voices: MJK
Original arrangement/performed by Alan McPike at the Mighty Wurlitzer. *

* Just a side note here: I recently got some flak about working with music coming from a non-Macjams member. I never see anybody complaining when somebody posts collabs with people from other sites who never step foot in the place. Thank you for indulging me in one of my increasingly rare and very infrequent almost serious moments.

Just A Gigolo?
Yeah, there's a guy like this in all of us - except the guy in me can't sing anywhere near as good as this. Silky smooth production just glides along like a 1920's passenger train!

*Side note: You shouldn't get flak for working with musicians from anywhere. Whatever gem you fashion from collaborating with musicians from the varied and countless paths of life beyond MJ, we should consider ourselves lucky you share the result with us. Can I get a "hell, yeah!!" from the audience?

Fun Fun Fun
smiles all around on this one Michael cool performance as usual:

NOTE: I am amazed that someone would complain about working with other musicians who do not have an account here, that is very small minded, there are quality musicians on every site who may not be here, and working with them is a blessing, and sharing that work is a right..

Nearly as much fun as a gigolo
Nice work. Impressive vocals. i think that it is the sort of song that relies a lot on the interpretation of the lyrics and you did it very well, i thought. Enjoyable stuff! You have the voice for this sort of stuff (probably as well as everything else).

Think i'll pass on the recipe just for now. Still trying to cope with Sunday lunch.

Yeah!
They should put a 5 cent cover charge on this place to keep the riff-raff out! Thanks very much Chris--and yes, I'm still recovering from the forays into the upper range (seems my voice gets deeper every year--in fact, I was a soprano 5 years ago and now look what happened!) Oh--"Ripple" is a very popular American wine--it is very cheap. It is so cheap, you can fill an entire water bed with it for about $7.95 (just sleep with your mouth over a slow leak and you are all set!) You take care now! Michael

Gigolo
So long as you're not a juggalo. Hey, I don't care how you make your music as long as it sounds good... and it does. I have 4 tracks posted that use vocals by the Beastie Boys, fercryinoutloud, and no one has given me flak for that. That seems unfair--where's my flak?

I only know this tune from the David Lee Roth version (I knew he was covering it tho), so I was able to mentally sing along with you. Anyway, this is cool, especially your singing and the horns. Applause!

Thanks for kindly stopping by and your positive endorsement on this tune! I remember the Roth version very well and as a dyed in the wool Louis Prima fan, it made me feel good to hear a rocker doing an homage to Louis (and it was a big hit for Roth too!) Bus
Photobucket

I thought you'd be interested in a visual of my bus journey...
This was during one of the quieter moments on the way home. Any busier and be at risk of an ass-whooping for attempting a stunt like this. The busses are so dangerous that there are CCTV cameras and monitors everywhere, which is how I got the photo. It's a jungle out there Michael and this rare snippet of English wildlife contains more than meets the eye. An experienced commuter like yourself will probably spot that i'm in a potentially perilous position with that clearly crazy girl sat behind me. Luckily for me she only had a severe case of tourette's. I've seen worse! That day was a good day :)

Just a Gigolo
Funny intro! How much is your helium bill?
Great vocal on this classic song. The DLR version had a bridge, was that not part of the original? Slick arrangement by McPike - I don't have a problem that he is not a MacJams member, the flak you caught is ridiculous.

Hi Dave
Actually, Roth's version was medley of this song and "I Ain't Got Nobody" if you'll recall (I may do that latter song one of these days too!) Alan does extremely great work and to be honest and candid, if there were more folks would could do the kind of music I kind of specialize in on these sites, I'd be more than willing to consider working with them (take the stuff I do with Sylvia and Andy of the "Easy Aces" for example). This type of stuff needs horns and saxophones, etc.--it's just how it is, you know? I love good music of ALL kinds and always will, but I can only perform the stuff I'm comfortable with. Well--enough--thanks so very much for your nice words and for taking the time to stop by Dave--appreciated! Michael

HELL YEAH!!!!
Sorry so late. Been on the road for a few days, heading for Maine for a few weeks.

Just a Gigolo is a great oldie.....and please, please, please do continue to sing with Alan McPike's music (or anyone you want to for that matter). I always learn something when I hear you sing to his accompaniments.

Louis Prima's version is memorable, and such a contrast to the serious approach by Jaye P Morgan in the early fifties. But best of all? The version right here, right now with Michael and Alan!....except it was too short.

Bring along anybody you want to MacJams, Michael... as long as they are part of the fun. Lots of great music can be found here that has some interesting non-MJ-member sidemen (including some Grammy-level musicians). I don't see any problem, as long as your not treading on anyone's copyrights.

You bring a lot of humor, nostalgia and mirth to MacJams and I, for one, enjoy it. And since these tracks give you an opportunity to showcase your unique vocal and comedic talents, I'm all for it.

You do a very classy job on these old popular songs and show tunes. I'm glad there are folks like you around helping to give them new life. ;)

vocals as always. With a certain off the wall humour that gives it a certain charm. I like your stuff, mate. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks very much STE
I think I got my sense of humor from my dad and from the guy I worked with in radio as a teen (now that guy was a riot, and something of a mentor to me). Very happy you liked this deal--and thanks for stopping by! Michael

Seriously. Not!
A pleasure to hear you again. About that covers flap: Tempest in a teapot. The discussion's pointless, especially on a site with no real admin. Love ya. And -- pass it on -- I just lost my wallet, and it didn't have my ID in it!

Hey Bob!
So solly about being late to answer your much appreciated remarks (I'm so busy lately you can only see me going, not coming!) Well, in terms of semantics, I rather dislike the word "cover" in the first place--there are some errant and egregious misconceptions about that word here and other places. My theory is "covers" started some time in the late 1950s when Leiber and Stoller said in a press conference: "Oh, we don't write songs. We write records." It started there. I don't hear anybody here performing say, Chopin, and being told it's a "cover"--same logic applies with my jinque. Okay, enough tabloid editorializing for one night! Thanks again--and you take good care partner! Michael

This is
a great song - have loved the Louis Prima version for years.
...You certainly do it justice too - enjoyed.

Louis!
Yanno Bob--I fell in love with this style of music from the very moment my babysitter took me and my brother to see a reissue of Walt Disney's "The Jungle Book". That song Prima sang (playing the "Ape King") had me dancing in the aisles--I think I created a much reported disturbance in the theater that afternoon! Always delighted to hear from you--thanks again for stopping by and hope you and yours are doing well! Michael

Fruit of your research
I love you posting the backstories of these public domain pieces. I think Louis Prima's version came out on his 1957 album "The Wildest," which was an attempt to capture the verve of his live Las Vegas shows with Keely Smith. I just assumed it was written around then - not three decades earlier.

What I like about your versions of these standards is that you try to make a song your own, often adding a playful twist or two during the spin cycle (or, in this case, during the pre-wash). That's refreshing!

I was surprised that the song eneded so abruptly, but that's because I automatically expected it to morp into "I ain't got nobody." I know realize that that is a separate song, that Prima had pulled two songs together as a medley, only I just never knew it. So there, I learned something else by listened to this post.

If my memory serves me well (and I'm becoming more skeptical of it as I age), I remember reading a history that said the Gallo Brothers worked long and hard to develop the perfect vino for the emerging American wine market(probably about the same time Louis was recording "Gigolo"), and they called the fruit of their research Ripple.
