Spring II

Description
A slightly edited and shorter version of Spring (posted first time in March 2005).

The piece came from the joy of discovering GarageBand. Since then I haven't taken the time to work on pieces like this, which was kind of a hard choice to make. Instead I devoted the time to the acoustic guitar.

Photo is from that time.

Great work Johannes, sounds quite different from other works I heard before. Nicely arranged and played.

Cool piece Johannes
although I kept waiting for the guitar to come in ;) I tried to do something along these lines and failed pretty completely - this has a real feeling of "place" to it. I'm hearing fjords and vast panoramic views - still lakes - green everywhere - the odd cloud in the bluest of skies. But then if it's spring in your part of the world, I guess there's still snow on the ground.
Lovely to listen to - glad you're back for a visit!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Impressive
I began listening with the expectation of hearing you play another of your wonderful guitar compositions, but very soon — after perhaps only nine minutes or so — and after repeated listenings, I began to suspect that something was different... But what? Had you changed your strings? Perhaps a different miking technique? Or maybe this was using an open guitar tuning that is so popular with the youth of today! Well, I could not figure it out, but that did not get in the way of my enjoyment of this composition! It's very beautiful, and an impressive accomplishment.... Well done, Johannes!

I am curious about the process... Was this done using the "pencil" tool in GB? And are the sounds all GB sounds? They sound magnificent!

I hope you are enjoying a pleasant autumn!

Thanks a lot Clark, amazing to get such a review from a pro!

Yes it is made by the pencil tool in GB. It was more than five years ago, but as I remember I started by draging in GB's loop tracks and then I reedited them freely to suit my ideas. And yes, they are all GB sounds. I used a jampack that contains all these sounds. It was for me quite a time-consuming project and that's why I haven't made any more of these. Felt it was better to use the time to culivate my guitar playing instead.

Warmth and beauty
Listen to this! Gorgeous horns, you've insured they sound quite realistic (so hard to do with ANY samples.) I love the woodwind touches here, and the slight dissonance here and there as the young double-reed plants push their way up to bask in the bright golden sunshine is perfect. You have so many things here, great pedal-tones, tremolo strings, excellent choices for orchestral voices, well-panned spread so everything is clear. I am happy you came back to revisit this, it is a gem of a dewdrop on your garden of music.

Drakonis

Bliss!
Such peaceful sounds....it doesn't seem possible that sounds like this could come from something called "Garageband". But I know GB is an Awesome tool and you've managed to pull out the most awesome, beautiful sounds!!! This is a keeper! dl.

So full of hope and joy. You can hear the love of music in this. I too like Neil had tried to do something along these lines and learned all to painfully how difficult it is to realize beauty & coherence. Well crafted and produced. Good to hear you post.

Sonorous...
I don't know if I ever heard the first version...

Shows that melodic and harmonic ideas aren't just habits of your well trained fingers, but that, starting from a blank canvas and with a palette of sounds, you can composed melody and harmony and then not only compose and assign the notes, but also assign the notes and movement to appropriate instruments....

Pretty neat, Johannes....

Mind you, I can always stand to hear more guitar, as well....

Eh
Well .. between you and me Ed .. one reason I posted this was that I had a look at the first post, and as always I looked too se what Ejh had written .. and then I saw there was no comment, and I kind of knew that if Ejh had heard it there would be a comment .. and then I realized that you came to MJ that same spring so maybe it was posted before .. and .. to make a long story short .. since I had made this upgrade to the tune a year ago or so, I decided to post it instead of giving you the link to the old one .. your presence here at MJ means a lot to me Ed ..

fingering of a different sort. Enjoyed this tune on the way home. It takes a special kind of talent to think out a composition this involved. I commend you for a job well done. Thanks for sharing.

wonderful work, johannes!
i imagine a very nice slow opening of a stately flower.
HORNS?? who knew? 1:39 introduces the tension, and it's lovely with an unexpected progression the change of mood at 2:24 is just great - 2:48 brings clouds again..... good job there, brother!
horn lines are rubbing against the strings in some interesting ways.
the deep change @ 4:31 is gorgeous, and the ending brings the flower fully opened. DOES THIS MEAN YOU SOLD YOUR GUITAR??? :o
