Yeats Against The Sea

Description
I sat in my room last night with my Seagull in open tuning and a capo on the fifth fret, just messing around (what else am I going to do on a Monday night?). The result is this tribute to a man who may be my favorite poet, William Butler Yeats. I had fun with this one...

The song title and the lyrics reference his poem "Cuchulain's Fight With The Sea" heavily. I hope you enjoy!

Lyrics
O! Let’s flee
With the wind to rage against the sea,

And O! Let’s die
Upon an emerald shore beneath an azure sky.

And there is verse ablaze in your breathing,
And the manacles have busted and the air is seething.

O! Let’s flee
Like Cúchulainn to rage against the sea,

And O! Let’s die
Left to dream alone of empty, azure eyes.

And there is verse ablaze in your breathing,
And the manacles have busted and the air is seething.

thank you sir!
pure guitar-playing has never been my strength, so that is very validating! I've been working a fair bit on my tapping and how clean I pluck my strings...I've also been trying to get more resonance on my tap harmonics a la Michael Hedges (my attempts are near the end), though in composition I owe a lot more to Paco De Lucia and Jimmy Wahlsteen for this particular piece. I am glad you enjoyed, and thanks for stopping by.

quiet
an interesting listen. Hypnotic in a way. Liked listening to you work out on the guitar. ..... actually the simplicity of the track worked well for me. Nice post.

I have never heard a seagull played so well.
You have a great sound ... my son said "you sound like a modern Bobby D."
I think he is referring to Dylan.
Like most fathers I'm not sure..LOL
This is very nicey done.

big compliments
I'm floored. Kids these days (I'm one of them) do tend to call him Bobby D...I don't call him anything, I just soak him up. Though the comparison is on some levels troubling, I do write and play very much in his shadow. Please tell your son that no higher praise could have been given. And to you, many thanks about your comment regarding my playing -- as always, I am very much a work in progress.

Cheers!

Modern Celt
I dig the lyrics. It does have a definite Celtic feel to it. I really enjoy the harmonic—semi Michael Hedges—ending. (Man... I love Seagull guitars.)

Glad you enjoyed my ending...I've been working on playing those kinds of notes. And yes, Seagull guitars are beautiful, I love the wood combos they use. Great instruments. Thanks for stopping by!

Bobby D...
...is definitely about Mr. Dylan. Got that sound within your own.

You asked for advice about playing:

Keep playing through the good and bad times. You obviously love it...nothing could be more important. Where you're coming from in the music is the key. The technique is and will continue to build from there.

Keep your hands/forearms/etc loose. When you sense them tightening, stop for a moment and start up again. Sometimes it helps to play in front of a mirror to disassociate from yourself and observe...

Re recording: post questions or search for similar posts to yours, here at MJ. I've learned a ton that way.

Cool lyrics, btw.

Thanks so much
for the feedback! I have not tried playing in front of a mirror -- that tip about relaxation is great. Thanks for your advice, and I'm so glad to see you dug the lyrics.

I actually had a spin through your stuff a few minutes ago, it reminded me eerily of Antoine Dufour, which is definitely a good thing. Your both play so crisply, and have such a dynamic style of composition.

That is some very impressive
fingerstyle guitar work. I really like this song a lot. That run down you did at about 2:15 was especially cool.

The vocals work very well on this one as well.

Good stuff!

Nicely done
The initial meandering gives way to a very hypnotic pattern which works really well. An "eastern" feel about it which suits the lyrics.

Cheers

Good Job!
Nice song this, great melodies would liked to have heard a bit more from the bass strings but a good song nicely played! If you dont use one already I would suggest using a thumb pick will really sort your bass out.

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
