Lyrics
Tilt-A -Whirl

Big Ferris wheel lights up a summer sky
The dizzy whirl of people passing by
Carousel plays a tin-pan alley tune
Shrieks and laughter, cotton candy, and popped balloons
We’re almost there… the velvet air
A mullet-haired boy in line with his goth-eyed girl
They’re buying tickets on the Tilt-A-Whirl

Midway barkers hawking out games of chance,
You can hear the pedal steel driftin’ in from the country dance
Wood chips on the muddy ground all wet with beer
As the halter top girls pass by all the bikers leer
A lost boy cries and rubs his eyes
Neon streaking by in a pinwheel blur
Take another ride on the Tilt-A-Whirl

Steppin’ over babies to find a good spot at last
Lyin’ on their backs on a blanket in the cool wet grass
Fireworks burst overhead like acetylene
Flowers of crimson, gold and candy green
Blossom there in the black night air
Over on the blanket, the mullet boy and girl
Take another ride on the Tilt-A-Whirl

Tilt-A-Whirl
Excellent Americana style imagery in the lyrics. The relaxed vocal and laid back instrumentation add to the ambiance. Pro sounding track.

fantastic
this falls just right. The mix is perfect. Your lyrics are very springsteen-esque, very striking.

This line: "Neon streaking by in a pinwheel blur"
Well done, sir.

I greatly enjoyed.

Really good, John...
It must be my week to come across carnival metaphors... I just read 'Johannes Cabal the Necromancer', which is itself a sort of riff on Ray Bradbury's 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'....

This has got some of that John Gorka quality of "this song is plainly and explicitly about THIS... or is it?" You're skillful about not waving big metaphors in the listener's face, and the images are solid and not cliche.

Another nice production, too...

Fairgrounds
I have a song somewhat inspired by a similar theme but with more of a tilt (pardon the reference) towards Tom Russell's Hotwalker CD. It's called Little Lucifer and I used the same "velvet air" phrase and there are elements of the fairground. This (Tilt-A-Whirl) is a great song, just as neat as it needs to be and very accomplished. A treat to listen to. Tom

Very nice
and not at all what I was expecting from the artwork......I was expecting something a bit like "Twilight Eyes" by Dean Koontz....seeing as it is nearly Hallowe'en.So this is a nice surprise and some excellent music and now I am burbling so .....Nurse the screens and a large brandy ..........

goth-eyed girl
great singing, band sounds perfect.
quite atmospheric and nice to listen to. like the layers of guitars, reminded me a bit of red house painters in spots (one of my favourite bands).
although the actual tilt-a-whirl makes me sick, this was a great ride!

Evocative
Great lyrics that paint a picture - I love the "snapshots of the scene" approach. Of course, your playing is always of the highest standard - beautiful clean picking, added to by subtle use of other instruments. Love the dreamy solo that takes the song out. Expressive vocal with good harmony lines. All up, an outstanding production!

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
