Description
This started out as an experiment: I took a jangly guitar part and put some reverb on a bus and then a pitch shifter on the reverb tail; and then automated the pitch. sounded pretty neat, so I bounced out the reverb only signal pitched really high, and used a sidechain from the original guitar part on it. the experiment should have ended there, but the end result reminded me of some bands I really like: Spacemen 3 (Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To), the Dark Side and Spiritualized. The fuzz wah guitar at the end is actually a synth that I took an acoustic guitar patch and ran it through a bunch of fuzz, wah, rotovibe and tape delay (I just love Logic's tape delay). Bryn helped me figure out the routing for the reverb trick.

This is basically a rhythmic drone with harmonies and some psych embellishments. The subject matter is about what a loser I was at one point (sitting around taking drugs to make music to take drugs to). Hopefully someone can get into this, although if you feel there is no song here, that's cool; we're probably just into different types of music.

Interesting
the guitar gives the piece a kind of urgency that is countered by the slow vocal delivery. Enjoyed. Cheers mark

Hells yeah, there's a song here. And a pretty damn good one at that. I think you perfectly captured the vibe of the song's subject. The vocals, synths, and drums add enough change and variation. This is very good and very original.

Taking drugs to make music. That is an occupation for some, it seems a lot of my music in my collection might be well influenced by drugs. Great arrangement, with the backing track and your vocal is outstanding. Lets light some candles, hey why not. I am with you on the tape delay, i use that a lot. Thoughtful track.

Im taking drugs while listening
just kiddin, the guitar reminds me of hanging out on the lower east side listening to a street musician who used chains and echo to bounce his guitar sound off the building around him. I like the fact that this has a build up feel that never really reaches a climax but at the same time it keeps evolving while not going anywhere if that makes sense. downloaded and in my M2 collection thanks!

Music to take the place of taking drugs
Great mix - I love the drums - simple and perfect - very live. Nice restraint with the orchestration at the end - you found a good balance there. This is my kind of music.

The guitar maintains tension through the entire piece and induces alertness in the listener, but the vocals have a calming effect. A real speedball of a song.

Very nice
As cool as this is I waiting for it to take off into a rock explosion. Those teasing drum fills kept leading me into one.
I absolutely love the guitar drone and you vocals.
Super

High production
version of 60's Psychedelic. I think the drone is really cool. Very metalic bowl sounding, in an arpeggiated sort of way. You really are a Raymond Scott kinda guy!

It's very weird...
..but in an incredibly excellent way! This is one piece I've enjoyed that I would be very hard put to describe to anyone else--they'd have to listen (are you sure there are no subliminal messages in this like "Listen to this 14 times at least!"? Thanks again--good stuff here!

the drums instantly connected. I love their minimal-ness if thats a word :-) It just all seems to come together in a dream. Dig those strings and laid back vox.

Cool artwork is that you too?

I
was kind of anticipating Keith Moon going crazy on the drums at some point but it was just a tease. The production on this is excellent, it's not easy to make a song with a drone all the way thru sound interesting. As usual your vocals are superb.

Success!
I love spending time experimenting with sounds and following it wherever it takes me. Glad you do too because your end product was a cool song. To me, this has a Flaming Lips vibe (from the early 90's), and it allows my mind to wander while my ears just sit and smile.

I thought your mix was good, except I wanted your voice to be a bit more defined, and the whole mix a bit brighter. That's just me, so take it for what it's worth. All in all, I really enjoyed the listen; thanks for posting.

Drones seem to be...
...a point of interest 'round MacJams just now... As Mark points out, it can be difficult to make interesting music based on a drone, but you've done it here...

Reminds me of 'Change Is Now' era Byrds a bit...

I like the sound of your voice very much...

no place like drone
Love the way you've put this all together.
Really builds up...but me, being a big drum fan was waiting for the rhythm to kick in big time and go ape-s**t...but maybe that would have spoilt it all.
maybe a touch more reverb on the drums that are there.
They just felt a bit 'cold' amongst the mix but apart from that great stuff.
I was adding harmonies and extra bits in my head .
I don't know if that means it's half a song or wether it's such an expansive canvas that you could have drawn it out longer and took it into a whole load of other areas
anyway
cool track
enjoyed

Cool song
Nice experiment gone right.

Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to. Yeah, I can relate to that. Good thing I didn't have recording gear back then because it would have just sounded like a stoned guy playing guitar.

Much enjoyed.

Beyond the world of lies
Like an electric digeriddoo-sitar. Post-modern chant. Another fascinating experiment. Cutting up self and sound, mixed with the ghost of split atoms, bussed and reprocessed, and out comes the buzz just beyond answers, a sense of something more right than what began. Or the hope of it. The lie of truth, the truth of the lie, context altered. Pretty cool.

love this. vocals are too quiet. can't hear what you're saying. don't be shy - turn up the volume and post your lyrics. you manage to maintain interest in something that goes nowhere...that's great writing.

No Peace
This song has a hypnotic quality to it. First, as I listen, I am waiting for a change of some sort, which never comes, but in the meantime I get drawn into that rhythm, and underlying bass line. All the fluffy, floaty synths help to complete the experience, and by the time the song ends, I wish it wasn't over yet. BUT, there is always the replay button.
I really enjoyed this michael - thanks for sharing -

Peaceful
piece of music about having no peace. I must first state that this is a great sounding bed of music, totally hypnotic and allureing. I love what you did with it, leaving the vox understated like a whisper of thought.
The drone sounds and the staccato percussive hits leave us expecting a build to a full on drum backed rocker, but we are left teased and craving, only to be drawn further into our thoughts.
My first instinct when I do stuff like this is to build and BANG, rock and roll, but I like the choice to keep this piece as is, like an interlude from a far bigger piece of music perhaps.

Really great , I love it!
Thanks for sharing this Michael!

This song is awesome
And strangely I do feel peace now. Intensely soothing. Didn't need anything else although I feel you could build this track for another two minutes by continually adding...anything (brass section from that Heligoland track with Horace Andy comes to mind) or not...good coffee you can drink without milk and sugar. Same here. Even the aftertaste is awesome.
