Description

This song was first Copyrighted by myself in 1983
as "Parking Lot".

Scott Horwath - alvarez dreadnaught guitar, (AD70-S), - all parts - vocals - composer.

Original

I also prefer "Playground".
and "Generosity Waltz" as alternate titles . . .
as . . . every single measure in this song
was awarded an extra beat . . .

some time after the photo . . . 15-foot criss-cross steel mesh fences were erected . . . surrounding the entire elementary school . . . preventing escapes . . . classroom desks were constructed in one piece . . . attached to the chairs . . . opening in front . . . for storage . . . with gum stuck underneath . . . and etching carved on top . . . the place is now called "Union Office Complex" within the block of "Union Square".

* my jazzy alvarez acoustic guitar intro. and jazzy ending right after the final 'G' chord ~ were just recorded,

and this entire version was just recorded Sept. 26, 2010 . . . but I might have oversaturated reverb effects on my Kustom mixer - a bit . . .

rather than trying to solo in the middle ~ I did this a little more like bookends ~ an engine and caboose treatment ~ in "Parking Lot" ~

Lyrics

There’s a parking lot – where my old playground was.
I used to walk by there – it’s only a mile from here.
Monday morning always showed an evil face on me.
Mrs. O’Leary always seemed to call my name.
We stood to pledge allegiance to the people’s flag you see.
And it was hard to understand just what to say.

I would walk outside – along by that rusty slide.
To wait for my ride – to take me on home again.
Afternoon at Union School is when they sent us out to play.
During a thunderstorm the clock was in the way.
Everybody knows just when the time is three-fifteen.
That’s when the bell would always end another day.

Playground went away – but everything’s o.k.
A parking lot is standing there today.
And the picture’s in the frame – where the laughter will remain.
‘Cause in my mind I’m goin’ back to play.

Now I’m here today – now and then I lost my way.
Behind the worst of times – waiting at the end of the line.
Came advancing through my teenage years – in hopes to find –
All of the mystery impossible to see.
Entertained myself with company beside the fire.
‘ Painted a picture of the places all around me.

The playground went away – but everything’s o.k.
A parking lot is standing there today.
The picture’s in the frame – where the laughter will remain.
‘ Cause in my mind I’m going back to play.
‘ Cause in my mind I’m going back to play.

hello
Hi ~ I do not actually recall any laughter
in the playground - during grade school - to be honest -
but I do recall other things from those times
in school . . . and on the playground . . .
I guess those lyrics just "fit better"
thanks ! and have a great new year !!

This is good
Understated vocal work works well here. Is this you on guitar too? A man of many talents. Well done. Kind of a Simon and Garfunkel vibe here.

howdy ~ Yah that's me on guitar ~ I do not actually recall any laughter in my fenced-off-jailyard playground (lyrics here) - during grade school - to be honest - but I do recall other things from those times in school however . . .

Like it!
Great vocal intervals - it amazes me how some voices can mesh when multi-tracked (and ponderous as to why some don't). The heavy dose of tremolo on your vocals reminds me of Chrissy Hynde a bit.

An interesting evocative piece that makes us all a bit introspective about the path of life and where we are on it (and how we got there). Excellent guitar work at the bookends, too. Thanks for sharing your song with us.

very
solid guitar playing, I really like the way you're using hammer-ons here. The vocals are very intimate, this has a really nice feel. Excellent job!

Ziggy
After reading the comments so far, agree with the Bowie overtones here, used to good effect, and in your own way. Impressively put together.

Enjoyed it.

I really appreciated
the way the melody changed at around 2:30-2:35. It as one of those "grab your heart out of your chest and show it to you" moves. heh heh
Awesome composition and use of ambient subtleties here man.

That, because of child labor laws; schools were institutionalized.
Like prisons..... to take care of the kids.. wheee.
Parking lots aren't that bad....

Wow
this is really great.

The recording quality is excellent.
Very well composed.
The reverbe is possibly saturated but it sounds pretty good in my monitors.
This is very enjoyable.
Nice work!

story
hey thanks ! - I tried the 'bookends' technique for this -
where the reverb was a little heavy - lucky for the
vocal accompanyment - I totally lifted all effects and reverb
/ / - I caught that sad story of your friend -
wanting it all and all - all in all it is so way not worth
it when you weigh the consequences - He must
be shi_ _ ing tacks right now . . .
