Description
The other day i was standing on a packed train and there was a young guy and girl in the seat in front of me, obviously boyfriend/girlfriend type situation, wearing the usual hoodies and headphones, both staring down at their ipods. And i remembered how we used to do it back in the day, a knockoff walkman and a mix tape and a splitter jack, and man that was such a better deal, because you shared the music, you weren't both in your little worlds you were both in that one, other world, the world of the music, together, like taking a trip to this rad place even if you lived in stripmall hell out in the boonies. Remember that? How cool was that? So I got to thinking up this song. But I was stuck on the chours until Monday when I was having one of those days when nothing sounds good, you know what I mean you just turn through the channels and the ipod and the CD collection and it all sounds the same, boring boring. So i popped the glove box on the way home and way in the back behind the ice scraper I found Joe Strummer's 'streetcore' and i thought why not and put it in. And wow, perfect. And I thought jesus my entire life Joe Strummer has been like a soundtrack, always writing those songs that fit whatever moment was at hand. What a genius. And the chorus popped into my head and that was that. So here's to the 3.99 radio shack splitter jack, and to Joe Strummer.

musically, I wanted this to be really big, like those glam 80's pop hits. I've been listening to the new Wang Chung (yeah, yeah) and I love that sound, it's the musical equivalent of lip gloss. so i was thinking along those lines.

Lyrics
you got your hand
in my back pocket
we're walking to
the peachtree mall sam goody
i like the way
your ears peek above the headphones
i like the way
the cord bounces on your collarbone

(and we ain't nowhere
but we don't care)

sharon, a walkman
(and I know, and I know, and I know)
nothing will come between you and me
(that nothing will come between us)
'cept Joe Strummer and a 6/8 beat

we're holding hands
under the table
in a booth
at the food court A&W
i like the way
you move your head to the beat as you eat your fries
i like the way
when you mouth the words you close your eyes

(and we ain't nowhere
but we don't care)

Sharon, a walkman
(and I know and I know and I know)
nothing will come between you and me
(nothing will come between us)
'cept Joe Strummer and a 6/8 beat

well that takes me back to the day. i think i wore out elvis costello & bowies let's dance on the walkman knock of.

great dynamics Craig. mellow verses & raucous chorus. all is right with the world

let's dance
ah man. bowie, a stray cats pompadour and some painter's pants. lol! i love bringing those memories forward, mixing them up with the day to day. i was remembering as I wrote this that i didn't know anyone with a "real" sony walkman. they were so expensive. everybody had a knockoff, and if you had auto reverse you were king.

Lip Gloss & a Walkman
The new Wang Chung, are they back? I loved them back in the day. This tune reminds me of those cool Doublemint commercials. You really have a great voice, and what a catchy chorus. Great song!

Awesome
This is really great Craig!

Joe Strummer! Ha! The Clash and The Pogues... that brings me back. Yeah that stuff is a big part of my influence as well. I'm going to have to Rock the Casbah soon.

Great song! You've really outdone yourself on this one. Everything flows so well. Killer!

combat rock
and london calling are my favorites, i used to sit in my room and contemplate the teenage world to 'straight to hell'. his solo stuff is just as good as the clash, if you haven't heard Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros 'streetcore' pick it up, he was working on it when he died. Very good stuff. He was a punk with a popster's heart.

This reminds me of...
when I was 14, riding my bike home after making out with my girlfriend in the park. It was a feeling of total elation and being one with the universe (which, of course, revolved around me). This song has an interesting production vibe as well--kind of warm and fuzzy, but with tiny electrical impulses. Everything gels in this song, thanks for posting.

man that's right, one with the universe. i love remembering that kind of thing, not to live in the past but to keep some perspective. and glad you like the production, it just came together, i didn't have to tweak much.

food court days
Nice line with the headphones/collarbone...
Very good music as always.
the layered vocals and guitars at the high points are sublime, also like the burbly guitar line in the prechorus....
very pop-crafty of you to put in a pre-chorus (if that's what it is)...
enjoyed, listened 3x and dl'ed!

lol i was thinking of it as 'that little monty norman meets foreigner thing that ramps into the chorus' but it sounds much better as a prechorus, so thanks! glad you liked it boss.

Biiiig Chorus
Where'd the inspiration for that come from ... Amazing tune, dripping with Prince funkiness in the verses, great words, love that guitar and the "we aint nowhere" lead in to the chorus. Big chunky guitars are rockin' the house and as always you tell a compelling story. Those Metropolitanne horns turned up again too!
Brilliant.

love song
everybody so far has been caught up in the nostalgia thing so thanks for noticing that it's a love song really, especially about those girls that are as into music as you are. every little small town kiddie crush became a rock and roll love affair with a soundtrack.

The contrast between the verse and chorus
is masterful! The verses have that gentle electric piano sound and the little guitar licks here and then you have the guitar surf lick for the lift and then--wow! And once again you took a sip from the nostalgia flagon without getting drowned in sentimentality. Excellent.

drowning
yeah i think that kind of thing is great to remember, because it's all shined up by time and its so cool now to think hey i'm living the fulfillment of that, you know, when you'd walk down the street holding hands and try to imagine what your life would be like 25 years later.

i played with the vocal levels in the chorus, trying to find that right level, where you can hear the words but they don't sit on top of the mix. Nothing i hate more than a 2 dimensional mix so sometimes I err in the opposite direction. The bonus is that you can make up your own words!

Nothing Will Come Between Us
That's a perfect line to describe two people who are standing closer than they normally would be without the headphones.

Your production on this song is really polished. You have a unique ability to cram five funky guitars, a handful of horns, twinkling electronics, and a dozen separate voices into a song without making it feel crowded. This is some good gumbo, dude.

I especially love the chorus on this song and the super crunchy guitar riffs. You also balanced the momentum of the toon. You have that quiet and intimate moment at the A&W and then it seems we (the listener) travels through the head phones to hear what's rockin' Sharon. Never imagined it'd be Wang Chung.

This might be my new ringtone.

Thanks for the download.

Pure bad ass. And this song honors him well. Love how you consistently drop any genre tags and just make the song get what it needs. Really how it should be done. Focus on the message and music and let it happen. Narrative is always fun in your songs. Like one of those CBS Sunday Morning pieces that are just a little slice of Americana. Great job.

A boy stuck in the 70's
Hi Craig, I think I was stuck in the 70's during the 80's and for a while I thought that was one of the best decisions I made :) But as I mature (?) I am coming to enjoy a wider spectrum of music and appreciate the songwriting and musical skill required to capture a "sound of the times". All of that is a preamble to saying I enjoyed this song and liked the lyrics. Thanks for the posting. Regards, Peter.
