Description
Back again with a new upload :-) A year and three days after the previous one :-(

Back in GB 4 :-) After a short and not so successful visit into Logic Studio 8. :-(

The good thing is I've got all those jam packs and stuff right in GB now. GB is so much more fun to get anything done in. The sound in Logic IS tons better, but it's just not worth it (for me).

Anyway. This song is called Summer 10, in my series of songs to get going with making music after a time of silence, usually some loopy stuff about the summer at hand. This year the summer is over, it's autumn/fall and looking back feels a bit sad. The happy things you experienced, the things you didn't get the time to do, the sunny days, the rain... But it is also getting a bit late in life. You may be looking back on your childhood in that same way, remembering the happy days, and the sad.

It's a simple song. I am no musician. It doesn't "swing" or "rock". (But I made it myself, no loops hurt.) There is a childish melody played straight more or less by pencilling in the piano roll. But there is also a recording of a couple of trains passing me on the platform at Karlberg in Stockholm when I happened to have a Zoom H2 with me. It's just one take but chopped and spread to taste and for a fun effect at the end ;-)

The picture was taken this summer in Lund in the south of Sweden where we stayed at this youth hostel in an old(!) set of sleeping cars. It's called The Train (Tåget). It was (sleep) walking down memory lane! (But woke with a bad headache...)

Credits: The children laughing is from www.partnersinrhyme.com/soundfx/human.shtml

Hope you'll enjoy. I have listened to it 28 times at work today and am still looking forward to listen again, so it works for me, anyway :-)

Thanks
That was quick. Glad you liked. Thanks for commenting. Yeah, sunshine - or just the memory of it?

Did it work well played out loud? I've mixed it with headphones mostly, but thought it sounded OK on small speakers at work, even if I couldn't play it very loud there...

Take care,
Henke

There you are
Long time no post, but this is nice my friend :D
I have to agree with you about logic, it's too much work for me as an amateur/hobby musician, hum musician I am not, but I sure like sounds in many ways.
And I loved this nice work on this as I'm glad to hear a new one from you.

The fun in music
Is what you often are stressing when posting something you have enjoyed working with, and I agree. The excellent results you seem to get just about every time may speak in favour of you being a bit above amateur level, but those are just words and we are dealing with music here ;-) And the fun for me is more in GB than in Logic. I am glad you liked this little piece, which started this summer with just the train sound which I found now last weekend and managed to conjure up a song around. That was fun!

Take care,
Henke

I am a little surprised that everyone seems to find this so "sparkling and sweet", when to me it is rather sad or at least melancholy. The latter is a feeling I rather "enjoy", though, so well, OK then... Still, I'm glad it could invoke a bit of summer for you now autumn/fall is upon us.

Take care,
Henke

LOL
you counted how many times you listened, I like that. This has a real angelic quality to it. Very cool melody and serene sounds. Sci Fi meets religion. Perhaps the "Scientology" of music. Something very soothing about that synth sound with the slow flange. Gave me the relaxed scalp tingle. Good enough reason to download me thinks! Great job on this. One of the most relaxing pieces I have heard on MJ very cool!

Hehe
well actually I had iTunes count for me ;-) Interesting you found an almost religious feeling in this. I did put New Age as a secondary genre (along with the ever missing "electronica"). I'm glad you found it relaxing. Unless you get the feeling (from the trains) that life is relentlessly rushing past you, I guess it IS rather soothing, with its 80 bpm slowness etc... (Reminds me of another of my songs, I forget which one, which almost put this stressed up guy listening to it in cardiac arrest :-/ )

Anyway, thanks for your nice comment. Take care,
Henke

Hi Henrik - it's been a long time and it's wonderful to see (hear) you here again! this is extremely cool - i might listen to it 28 times before this day is over myself! love the intense changes, the airy lightness in places - the background voices, the children's voices - it all works great!! thanks!

Thank you Karen
You're very kind, as usual. It WAS a long wait and I've been rather depressed by it. I did open the software a couple of times but nothing I tried to do would work, so I quit and waited for better times.

Glad you liked the children's laughter. It was the very last thing I thought of, or rather I heard it in my head in that passage sounding just like this, so I was happy to find this little sound clip on the internet among a number of really "bad" laughing-sounds or stuff that would have cost some money and all the hassle with that. When listening those 28 times they were more in the background, like a more distant memory, but I found myself listening more and more intently for them which spoiled a lot of the song as a whole. But maybe they are too loud now? I don't know.

Thanks again and take care,
Henke

Ah, Summer melancholy..!
At last someone that hears the sadness in this piece ;-)

Yeah, long time, but I was here all the time, only just listening (and commenting when I had something to say or the time to say it). So much great music to listen to didn't exactly help me do a new song...

Well, I AM glad to be posting again. Just keeping my finger crossed it won't be another year 'til the next one :-|

Double take
No, it can't be! Henke, my good man, such a long time since you've posted. I really did do a double take when "Henke" flashed before my eyes on the front page. Excellent to hear a new one. A joyous piece. There's just something about innocent laughter, and the music conveys that very well. Personally, I always look forward to the end of summer, when my favorite time of year starts. I suppose that's a climate thing, though. Anyway, thanks for posting a new one. More please.

What's another year...
Actually quite a long time when all you want is make some more music :-| But I agree with you about autumn/fall, it can be very nice with all the colors and fresh air - as long as it doesn't rain too much or the wind is too fierce. Maybe you like it better in younger years too. With old age comes the symbolism of life, reminding you that your time is running out. Or something like that (what would I know, I'm not even 50 yet 8-| ).

Thanks, I'll see what I can do about that next song :-)

Way!
A new Henke tune. And a good one too, though maybe a longer version in the offing? Nice my man. Is it really a year since your last tune?

Shame you didn't get to grips with Logic. I agree about GB being more fun, initially. But once you've sorted out the mire that is the Logic interface [you never fully do btw] it is a lot more fun than GB, believe me! And you can do so much more with it.

Anyway, nice to see you posting music up again, and such a fine offering too.

Henke said 2392 days ago (October 9th, 2010)
A year it is
Didn't quite believe it myself. A longer version you say? But to that I say nay. I know I will be listening to this hundreds of times and the longer it is the risk of it getting too repetitive inside itself, so to speak, is increasing. My wish is that you would like to listen again, and again. Downloads are always free on my songs. If you have the time, just try and put them on repeat for awhile, maybe while doing other stuff, that's OK. With that said I am not saying I succeed with this "aim" every time, but I prefer that to some radio stuff where you are practically bored even before the song is over.

I am glad that you have found your way in Logic. I know "logically" you must be right. But it is not for me. I use it too seldom and will never get to that creative breakpoint where it starts to be fun. What I would like to learn is to import a GB project into Logic and then just Bounce it, hopefully getting a better "omph" to the sound. (Actually I tried once but ended up messing around with the various tracks and destroyed the piece altogether.)

Enough ranting. Thanks for your continued support and for your nice comment. Take care,

Henke

Logic
Well, yes Henke, you can open GB files in Logic. It's very easy! Just drag the file icon onto the Logic application icon in the Dock and voila! It opens up in Logic. You can then play around with it. It's good way to learn about what Logic can do, and what I first did. Initially, I started off by using Logic 7. I have to say, Logic 8 [which I now have] is much easier. Also, I don't think, since GB went 24 bit, that the sound quality is that much different actually, but you can certainly do more with Logic than you can with GB. You should also have a play with Waveburner, which comes with Logic Studio. It has some useful mastering settings and is good for making CDs. You should just have a go, open up some old tunes in Logic and play with them, or drop them into Waveburner and have a fiddle about. What's to lose? :-)
Check out my latest song called Lost and Found
Henke said 2392 days ago (October 9th, 2010)
OK, nothing to lose!
Thanks for the tip. I didn't know what Waveburner could do for me. So how does it work, one file/song at a time or a CD's worth to make them all go together nicely? I've never tried that, obviously :-|

Also, I agree 24 bit GB is much better than before, but still I think Logic may do a bit better still, just psychology perhaps ;-) BTW, how are you doing with Omnisphere? Another synth "to drown in" or just music heaven? /H
Check out my latest song called Summer (Promenade) (WIP)
davajonah said 2392 days ago (October 9th, 2010)
Waveburner
I find it a very cool piece of kit, and simple to use, either for individual tracks, or a batch. Much quicker to burn CDs than iTunes. Load your aiffs, play around with the settings if you want, burn to CD. Easy to do an album's worth.

As for Omnisphere, well I have about four or five tunes in various stages of incompleteness here on the HD. I can find no inspiration to finish them, at this time. Too busy earning a crust, sadly. It's a wonderful synth though, works well in GB too.

Henke said 2392 days ago (October 9th, 2010)

I'll be sure to try Waveburner then. Hope you will soon find time and inspiration again. I know the feeling of not "having it", and it's not nice. Stay well. /H

Henrik, I am a firm believer in quality over quantity, and it is better to have one great work in a year than 10 mediocres. This is your one great work. Masterfully done - very relaxing to lsten to. Very effective use of ambient sounds - I love it! Nice to see a new post from you. Man - I can't wait till next year!

You have no idea
what a lousy musician I am, but maybe it has to do with how you define the word. I am thinking "being able to play an instrument (live) and (right) making it all sound enjoyable according to genre", well, something like that. It is true I figured out the little melody on my keyboard but to get the timing right I had to pencil it, drag and drop, copy and paste etc. I am only grateful I got this melody in my head while doodling around. On a lucky day I just might call myself "composer" - if not a very good one, but musician, let alone artist, naw...

Still, of course your kind comment warmed my heart, so thank you!

Right on
Thanks for that kind comment. The panning of the train was interesting. For starters it was a stereo recording so it was more or less panned to begin with, but as a very last thought when mixing I had the right ear go on a little longer than the left for extra effect (on the "intro" train). I am not sure you can hear it consciously, but I think it still made a nice difference...

Well, I sure enjoyed yuor latest piece(s) as well, especially "Not a love song" (awigze) but also "As A Friend".

very nice warm work
Nice work melding the sounds with the wafting synths, and the great melody. You do convey a dreamy quality, and the children laughing was a great touch. At the very end, I think it is squealing brakes? That sound was unexpected, and given the children just before it, at first I thought it was screaming children or something, and it took a moment for me to figure it out. Maybe that high-pitched squeal could be reduced or removed, and just have the "arrival announcer" instead.

Always great to hear something new from you, and this was very nice.

Thank you, Drak!
And welcome back from China, seems to have been a nice trip according to preliminary reports :-) I am flattered you have already gotten down to my humble post of the hundreds waiting, and that you'd take the time to comment too.

That said I am not sure I agree about those breaks, I think they are pretty well "supported" with the long train sound intro and the break (no pun intended) in the middle of the song. Also the whole piece is softening/thinning out towards the end to prepare for a final break at the platform. I guess, though, it may have to do with what volume you are listening at. At some levels you're probably right about it sounding like screaming children.

BTW, the "arrival announcer" is actually announcing that the train just arrived at the platform will be leaving for "Märsta", and the very last sound to be heard is a person talking in her cellphone (about the signal that may be lost in some tunnels one or two stations away ;-)

Anyway, glad you liked it.

Take care,
Henrik

Wow, what a relaxed and peaceful tune ... I love the retro sounds used (did you know I have a weaknes for 80s new age :) It does not seem to me like someone looking back in memories that much ... rather like someone falling asleep on a train station and drifting into a beautiful dream that makes him feel so happy and relaxed despite all the trains he keeps missing while sleeping :) Glad to hear a new song from you, ENJOYED!

It took me so long to get here (Ive been away for a while) This is excellent Henrik. I love the sounds and the way you have used them. I hear joy in the chord structure at two minutes or so also the bells are a happy sound floating along in their arpeggio. But then the solo bell at three minutes brigs with it a wistfulness that endures to the end of the piece. Really terrific work my friend.

That's a very nice comment. Eventually I have found a couple of thing I would like to fix in this, e.g. shorten the initial train sound. I guess it might scare people off. Also there is a "twinge" in the first solo instrument, that should be fairly easy to fix. Maybe the final train sound could be made a bit better too...

Thanks again,

Epic
I love this kind of music, really.
Can I have more, please?

No need to say more. I just will try to create something in this style. But it will be difficult to reach your level.

Now I will hovering to this song all night long...

Thank you for sharing!

Take my bows,

Bernd

Thank you Bernd
Sorry for the late answer. I seem to be a little "intimidated" by such kind comments and I can't spell out a decent reply for a while :-) Anyway, I'm so happy you liked it and will try something similar. Only I am sure you will surpass my humble attempt easily enough...

BTW, did I mention my daughter is living not very far from you these coming 6 months? On the other (northern) side of Hamburg, but still. She is working with rehabilitating horses as some kind of intern...

Cool panning
The children laughing are really nice and I like how the sounds float from one headphone to the other:) Thanks for sharing - well done.

Ambiance....
This definitely has a warm ambiance.... Very cinematic.... I like it!

And I, too, agree that Logic can be very confusing... But, don't give up on it! :) - Olivia -

Thank you, Olivia!
Nice of you to come by for a listen and commenting. Glad you liked it.

I guess my problem with Logic is that I use it far too little and too seldom. That way I am a newbie every time and that just won't do. At least it's a lot easier in Garageband.

Talking of newbies: It says on your page you're one of them (too), only I sure can't hear it on your latest offering. Pro stuff that :-)

Take care,
Henke

Nice song!
Is it the train to Märsta (or possibly U.V.)shrieking at the end? :)

Thanks
Yeah, I think it was the one to Märsta, the one I was waiting for... Maybe you are the person talking on the cell phone at the very very end warning the one on the other end that the signal might go out in the tunnels at Solna..? Anyway, may we listen to some of your own music here anytime soon?

Thanks again for listening and commenting.

Signal failure
Oh yes, I've had my fair share of signal failures on that train so it's quite possible.

I hope I can finish something very soon. I'm struggling learning Logic as well as making music at the same time, and it's very time consuming combo!

What a return
and yes, I'm so late to the party it's summer 2011. It sounds like moving back to GB has done you no harm whatsoever. This is a tune that really breathes. Long summer evenings, stars slowly appearing overhead. The fx are great additions.

Another winner tune.

Thanks for the post!
Doug

very nice piece!
This piece has a nice, organic flow to it, and some wonderful contrast and evolution. I would say that it is VERY musical. You may not see yourself as a musician so much in the traditional sense (maybe?) but the piece has a lot of musicality to it. Keep up the good work, Jerry

this is beautiful Henke
This is beautiful , I love the intro. You also use beautiful textures swirling around in the background.
I would add a "tad" of delay on the lead line. But the piece is beautiful anyway. Loops are very very tasty. This is a brain massage . Downloaded onto my mp3 player.
It is probably one of the most relaxing things I have heard on macjams and for spacers like me that's a good thing.
