CAT FACED GIRL (w ktb and kevmikwa)

Description
Lyric ideas for this came from a novel I was reading - "Patchwork Planet" by Ann Tyler. I just mixed a few characters together and came up with the two in the song. I heard James Black playing the riff on Rockwiz as a throwaway filler between songs, and made sure I recorded it so it wouldn't escape my failing memory. The jazzy descending section is cannibalised from another song I had in the works.

This was an obvious song for Mike Watkins (kevmikwa) to replace my rather average midi drum track - luckily he was available. Then I figured it was a song that could handle a growly clav sound under it, so asked John Libby (ktb) to add something. John is the fastest keys collaborator in the west (or east), and I was very pleased with the tracks he sent - which I then proceeded to change sounds on. His 3 electric piano tracks quickly became one B3 track, one Bosendorfer piano track and the smokey clav track. I'm playing guitars and bass.

BIG THANKS to John and Mike!

Lyrics
Cat-Faced Girl
©2010 Neil Porter

She was a crazy little cat-faced girl
He was a man that you could trust
She’d been looking everywhere
And she met him on a midnight bus

He was looking for angels
He was looking for someone to love
She was looking for trouble

City streets were full of trouble
Lungs were full of dust
He’d been looking everywhere
And she met him on a midnight bus

He was looking for angels
He was looking for someone to love
She was looking for trouble

INSTR

She came from somewhere down the road
She didn’t even pack
She’d been looking everywhere
And she wasn’t going back

He was looking for angels
He was looking for someone to love
She was looking for trouble

Short and sweet was what it was
Not much to discuss
She’d been looking everywhere
And she got back on the midnight bus

He was looking for angels
He was looking for someone to love
She was looking for trouble

Yes!
I'm gonna comment first on the mix; it's dynamite. Everything is right in the pocket, the eq curve is spot on, and the reverbs are very tasteful. Next, this was a very well-written song, and your guitar tracks are rockin'. Also, your voice sounds relaxed and in the groove. Hat's off to John and mike for their contributions as well. I'm gonna listen again now. Thanks for posting.

C.B.
I just checked your profile to jog my memory, and as a result, I am really pleased about the comments you made on the mix. There was a lot of discussion about the mix - manly trying to get Mike's kick drum sounding properly in the mix. I think we eventually nailed it - Mike's track works so well. I especially love John's keys - he let me play with the sounds quite a bit, although I doubt he expected such a radical transformation. I've recently switched from a Rode NT3 to a Rode M1 for vocals, and find it a much smoother way to catch my rather unusual vocalising.
Thanks for listening.

Has a touch....
...of Little Feat in its rock and stagger....

I thought the drums were great before I read that Mike did 'em, and I was just about to compliment you on the outstanding feel in your programming... Really does have a touch of Richie Hayward to these old ears...

John's keyboard parts are form fitted and perfect... Both the notes and the sounds are the right feel and flavor...

Then there's you, and I think you've done a really nice job all around. The lyrics have that world weary Becker and Fagen, film noire vibe. Your singing is loose and really well recorded. Nice bit of air to the vocal sound. AND I still love your approach to the Telecaster and the P-Bass... Nice solo bits....

And the girl's eyes are stunningly green....

Good job all 'round, I think...
jiguma said 2566 days ago (October 9th, 2010)
a touch
Little Feat have been very much on my mind of late Ed, as have Fagen and Becker, so I'm really pleased that they appeared for you in the song. It's fantastic to be able to conjure up John and Mike with a simple email - if only we lived a little closer :(
Glad you enjoyed it - the girl with the green eyes is a photo from a Photoshop tutorial.

Neil

Very funky!
What a nice groove! It's very very nice and greasy, goes down easy.
That's the easy part, the cool superlatives, but if you posted it here for helpful criticism, I can't help feeling that this would be cool with a more full bodied vocal. I know this is your style, and as Ed says, it's very well recorded, but I keep hearing a more Tom Jones type of full throated and soulful jazz style and your style is sort of cool for the depth of this funk. Maybe you could try to find someone to sing this that has that type of voice and it could really match up better with the sound of the drums and the all. That drum track is seriously kickin' it! The only other thing that strikes me is that the lead guitar part could come forward in the mix; the guitar solo isn't loud enough, it's seeming quieter than the organ solo, and the guitar sort of peters out at the end of the solo rather than launching that last verse. Sometimes you can get that by adding a delay into the end of the guitar solo so that it just soars over the vocal coming back it. But that's just something that you might consider and just one of any number of mix options. That may be more it, the mix is a bit off in a rather elusive way. Superlative mixing is sort of elusive like that; there shouldn't be a formula; it should be more alchemy; shrouded in mystery.
Of course you could ignore me and not change a thing and it still would be a great song, since it's got a great lick in it and a nice verse-chorus thing. I'm a picky bastard and don't comment much because of that. And I don't post much music of my own any more myself because I'm too picky for my own good usually. Thanks for putting this up!
And all of you, Neil, Mike and John really are seriously sick (in a good way) musicians!

Honoured ......
to get such a lengthy comment Jim. Couldn't agree more about the vocal, but I haven't quite reached the point in collabs yet where I feel that handing over vocal duties is appropriate. Probably not far off though - I'm hearing a good female voice on it rather than Tom Jones though - or maybe Jack Bruce. I think the mix is pretty much effected by my playback options in the studio - I only used my Event monitors and my phones on this, and while they give me a good listen, they don't offer a wide range of listening options. I did spend a lot of time trying to get John and Mike's' inputs as right as I could - maybe I could have looked more closely at my own ;)
Thanks for giving it a critical listen and offering sensible advice though - a rare commodity these days.
Best wishes from Oz,
Neil

John's never going to send me piano midi files again ;) That B3 just worked so well with the notes he sent. I thought about harmonies, and even did a few runs with them, but they never really worked - kind of detracted from the forward motion or something.
Thanks for the kind words!

Some nice riffing
going on here and some slight identity crisis insomuch as the twisting and turning between rock riffs and jazz ,and yet there is a country feel to the construction of the lyric.Keeps the listener guessing, which is spot on.All the instrumental work is great and it works on all levels.Nicely done mucker.

John!!!!!
Thanks yet again for adding keys to this little ditty. I'm quite fluent in midi, and as long as you're happy to let me decide what instruments you're playing after you've played them, things will work out fine. The clav sound is the "smoky clav" from Logic Studio, and I love it too. I was really hoping for something along the lines of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition", and this certainly seemed to work. Loved the way the "B3" solo and fills worked out too. It's funny, whenever I get a keys collab track, my first reaction is usually "oh :(", but almost without exception, after a few listens I like it. Every time I listen to this, I appreciate the keys more and more. Thanks so much for your tracks! I'm hoping to have something new for you in a few weeks.
Cheers,
Neil

Troubled angels
I once sat next to a not-as-young-as-she-was-when-she-got-that-tattoo woman on the subway who had not only cat tattoos on her face, but bone-like whiskers embedded in he cheeks. Other than that, she was dressed normally. I think, at last at some point, she was looking for trouble too.

I dig the bluesy feel of this. And always applaud an organ solo! The coolness of the sound goes really well with the lyrics and vibe. Your descending chords coming out of the instrumental were very cool.

Thoroughly enjoyed. Here's to loving the troubled angels of the world!

Yes, there are some interesting people out there - in my web search for pics I discovered a woman who is turning her face into a cat's through (pretty bad, from what I saw) surgery. I wonder what makes people do that? The keys parts on this all arrived as electric piano and midi files, and I fiddled about quite a bit with the midi to get sounds that I was imagining in the song. You know how I love a B3! That run down is probably as close as I'm likely to get to jazz ;)
Best wishes from Oz,
Neil
