Description
While trying to find that 50's jazz sound, I found most bands back then panned the drums hard left or right and the other instruments to the other side. That sounded really strange in my monitors... Then I ran across Philly Joe Jones (drummer for Miles Davis) . WOW, can he swing a groove. Those guys from the 60's put the drums in stereo (or dual mono reading some articles) so I thought I would give it a go.
I found a few jazz loops and put drums behind them, then read up on how they recorded drums in the 60's and tried to do it "their way"...very roomy and no Flextime in Logic in 1960. This was a 1 shot deal so the mistakes are evident, but a mistake free take was not my goal. ....just fun! hope you enjoy!

Here is a little youtube just in case:

One of my
favourite things to do is to sit in an intimate jazz club, drink and let this stuff take me away. You've made me feel like going out tonight now. Very much enjoyed. Loved the video too.
Cheers
Len

Oh Man! scott! dude!
This brings back memories of a jazz trio in Charleston, SC. The drummer is the drum teacher at Charleston University, can't think of his name, best live drummer I've ever seen, he played in a salsa reggae type band too, you remind me a lot of him here very tastey stuff dude, great great post!!!!!

Wow. Loved it Scott. Awesome you did this in one take. Yeah you found the groove, the feeling and the sound of the times. Back to the future.
I checked out the video too. 1:40 snare dynamics are great. Loved the "wake-up guys!" hits during the bass solo.
Hey, I'm the smiling man in the coffee shop this morning. BTW, no mistakes detected in IL.

Wow Scott
This really has an old school sound. It sounds pretty analog to me too. Definitely a different drum sound this way. Pretty cool experiment! This song is all loops? Amazingly complete sounding

Inspirational
I downloaded this so I could noodle around on my Strat along with it. I would love to have the chord progression so it would save me a week or two of trying to figure it out lol. I have a dyslexic ear. This is 10's across the board Scott, I wish I had found it sooner. Philly Jones isn't the only one who can swing a groove. Your goal has been more than accomplished. It has been awhile since a piece has actually inspired me to pick up my guitar. Thank you.
Peace

Jazz Zone
to me Andy is not only the most challenging to play, but the hardest to make (sound) the way I like it...I absolutely love getting into the Jazz zone..you know what I mean because I know you have been there!!!
Its like no other musical zone...twilight perhaps?

I did a
horrible job at making them sound (old) I guess I should have compressed a bit more and brought the High overheads EQ down as well. Learning kurve to make that old time sound I desire.
