Wonderland Blvd [w/ Gaylen75 and Scofugate]

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I uploaded an instrumental version of this (called Revolution 57) which featured Scott Fugate on drums. This song (now called Wonderland Blvd) adds the lyrics and vocals of Gaylen Sharp.

As always, Gaylen adds an element of magic to every track I've worked on with him. I think this is the best yet. The lyrics, based on Alice in Wonderland, are excellent and really give it a sense of wonder.

I hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics
She's gone from me again, to them with leaded lids
I call out as she falls Into ambient dream
Her falling is so soft, so lucid, so clean
Tumble down now sweet Alice, tumble away from me

Back here on my death bed I put my hands on my weary head
And I think those scary thoughts; did She's go to them willfully
She's Gone now from my sight now; the ravage of the lamb
Tumble down now sweet Alice, tumble away from me

The finally brick yeah it drops so heavy
on my slow trip into sleep
I run so frantic because she's not alone
she doesnt know that shes in too deep

My love's been playing the hard Games
shes been sipping tea with the handsome thief

when I close my sleeping eyes i Fall back to fuzzy earth
Wake now to dieing dreams To twisted and hateful sheets
my very last retreat Oh, solidarity
Tumble down now Alice Tumble down At my feet

Back here on my death bed I put my hands on my weary head
And think those scary thoughts did She's go to them willingly
she's Gone now from my sight now The ravage of the lamb
Tumble down now sweet Alice Tumble away from me

the Finally brick yeah it drops so heavy
On my slow trip into sleep
I run so frantic because she's not alone
she dont know shes in too deep

My loveâs been playing the hard Games
shes been sipping tea with the handsome thief

If the future is to compare
to the flaxen ghosts of my past
She must ascend from wicked heights,
and swear the promise of defeat
Under silky sky Iâm waiting,
beneath omniscient rule, waiting
beneath expectation, fading
Above all, I fall away from you

the Finally brick yeah, it drops so heavy
On my slow trip into sleep
I run so frantic because she's not alone
she dont know shes in too deep

My loveâs been playing the hard Games
shes been sipping tea with the handsome thief

he'll have his way with my baby
and she likes her tea so oversweet

I've been
looking forward to this! First impression is that Gaylen's vocal is brilliant, but mixed way too high for me (especially in the first half of the song) - it covers a lot of the interesting instrumental subtext (can you have "instrumental subtext"?). That aside, it's a great post - excellent recording and production overall.

Vocal mix
I've done at least three different mixes with the vocals. I really wanted them to stand out. I had one version that introduced some harmonies, but the more I listened to it the more I found it distracting. I may post another version of this after I give it some time to "breath".

Really great overall feel here Steve. My vocals are loud but I am way thrilled about the additional stuff. One more mix and this is a great one for the coffers.

Outstanding vocals.
You did a great job with this, Gaylen. I love the lyrics. I wanted them to stand out. I'll look at doing another mix in a few weeks.

funky goodness
This turned out incredible. I really like how you mixed it. Very funky cool and a tad dark. Everything gives off the right vibe and works well together. D/L for sure.

Funky Goodness
Thanks, Carrie. This was a tough one to mix. In some places it is very simple, others it is way too complex. It was hard to find a good balance between the vocals and the instrumental sections. I'm glad you like it.

Steve
Gaylen and Scott... I knew this was going to be good before I even hit play. Vocal mix is just right in that it can be played back at any volume level and everything shines. This is right.... yep. Guitars are clear and exceptional... and the drums that only can be produced by that human feel... Scott's.

Gaylen and Scott
This is the first tune I've done with both of them together. Scott's drums were inspirational. I really like the sense of dynamics he brings. Gaylen brings such an interesting perspective (both lyrically and vocally). It was a joy working with both of them. I hope to do it again soon.

Ozzy
I heard it in the chorus too. I added some effects to accentuate it a bit (something I hear in Ozzy's recordings).

Wonderland
This was a really fun project for me. It started out as a simple funk groove. I asked Scott to do the drums and I love what he did with it. Gaylen added his lyrics and vocals and I'm very proud of what came out of it. I'm glad you liked it. Check out the instrumental version: http://www.macjams.com/song/63790

very cool!
great job by all, I agree that the vocals are a bit loud but it's gotta be hard not to crank Gaylen up! Great backer, terrific lyrics, Gaylen's melodies are like a musician jammin to a song, no confines, very cool! Scott rocks! Your backer is awesome!

Coolness
Scoot does rock! He really pumped the energy into this tune. I had what I considered a pretty good backing drum track (built from loops) and Scott just completely knocked it out of the park. I'm amazed at how much of a difference he made.

You are right about Gaylen's melodies. The idea for the lyrics and his vocal performance really make it.

Cool backer brings me back to the 70's. Wild lyric with some great imagery, distinctive phrasing & intonation. Scott is rock solid on those drums.

70s
I hate to admit it, but that was my primary musical decade. I graduated from high school in 73 and played professionally off and on from 71 to 78 (when I got married). Nothing like living in the past ;)
Life is a series of evolutions and regressions I guess. I take the sounds I most identify with and try to make something new with them.

Awesome
"Alice", I used to play that video game. The music track is fabulous, and of course the vocals & lyrics are terrific. I don't think they're too loud at all. Got an Ozzy feel to this, very cool. Awesome collab guys!

Awesome Alice
I had a strong sense of Ozzy when I first heard the vocal track. I love the old Black Sabbath stuff. Not that Gaylen isn't totally unique, but sometimes you hear things that spark a memory. I've listened to it a few times now and I think I got the mix just about right. I wanted to be careful not to bury the vocals. The lyrics are great and he puts quite a bit of character into his performance. I'm afraid if they were any less present you'd miss out.

Very cool
You guys did a great job with this one.

Gaylens vocals add a lot for sure. If I was Steve I would have erred on the side of putting Gaylens vocals too far forward rather than too far behind.

Awesome performances from all!

I am happy
to be a part of this one. I have waited a long time to collab with these guys separate or together, and man it was fun going through the process of watching this grow. Steve, I love what you have accomplished with the sound of my drums here as this is my first attempt at this genre. Gaylen.. what can I say,..you are the man, Steve you are an amazing songwriter!!

killer work here Steve
there's so much to like about this... I love how the sections flow into each other.... especially "My love's been playing".... perfectly framing for such an abstract work... surreal and fanciful.... I'm getting a bit of a Thomas Dolby vibe, because of the textured soundscape.... and it doesn't hurt to have a real drummer... that solves all kinds of problems for me when working in a DAW.... real drums played skillfully...

I know folks have said the vocal is a tad to up in the mix and I agree... but this still rocks....

you're quite the musician old friend...

Very cool trio of talent here... my only nit would be that Gaylen's spoken part felt dry and wooden (as if reading from a script)... I would have liked a little more poetic dreamy delivery there... but the music, singing, and drum-work are exquisite.

I like the sparse texture, and the mood... kind of hard to describe, but it's very cool. It's got a kind of edgy quality that I really like, and it all seems very creative and original. Very fine work here!

I remember
playing the Alice computer game. Cool and bizarre game fitting the mood of the story. The music works here and the vocal give it a slight Bowie feel especially during the chorus. I love all the stuff going on in this song. Thick but understandable.
