Description
This was based on some reading I was doing on homelessness. It surprised me to read that in Australia, 70 people "go missing" every day for various reasons - most come home within a week or so - 300 or so each year are never "found". Some leave because of mental illness, some as a result of domestic violence, some because of financial reasons, and some who just don't like their life at the time. I wondered just how a person might "disappear" - which is where the words came from.

Musically, I'm playing everything here (again). The instrumental bed came pretty easily, but it has taken me a long time to reach a point where I'm happy with the vocals. The vocals were recorded using both my Rode mics - the M1 and the NT3 - hoping to get a nice mix between the nice roundness of the M1 with the crispness of the NT3.

Drums are midi - based on a few midi loops and then "micro-managed" to suit the song. Thanks to Mike Watkins for drumming support.

A version with Fran Dagostino on lead guitar is here:

Lyrics
The Wrong Way Home
©2010 Neil Porter

Kissed your wife and kids this morning
Headed down the track
You love them but you leave them
You just don’t come back
You take a different turn this time
Don’t know why
Just take the wrong way home

Office running smoothly
Nothing out of whack
Nothing out of order
You just don’t come back
You take a different turn this time
Don’t know why
Just take the wrong way home

Just walk out, nobody’s looking
Out the door into the street
Get on any bus
And take a seat
Might end up in a lane somewhere
Working on some scheme
Might take that desert island
Some medicated dream
Take the long way home

No-one’s going to miss you
You’re no leader of the pack
Disappear without a suitcase
You just don’t come back
You take a different turn this time
Don’t know why
Just take the wrong way home

Three score and ten go missing every day
Taking the wrong track
You love them but you leave them
You just don’t come back
You take a different turn this time
Don’t know why
Just take the wrong way home

Just walk out, nobody’s looking
Out the door into the street
Get on any bus
And take a seat
Might end up in a lane somewhere
Working on some scheme
Might make that desert island
Some medicated dream
Take the wrong way home

I kind of lost my mojo there for a while, but it seems to be coming back. The interesting thing about "mispers" is that there seems to be a lot of difference in how they end up and what they do when they leave. Some (the ones with money I guess) can just take off to another country and start a new life, others end up on the streets or just take off to travel. I was amazed at the numbers though.
Thanks as usual for the listen and comment.
Cheers from Oz,
N

Slick!
This is really slick Neil! Man that bass and guitar are smoking! To me it sounds like two different players are playing together which is really cool. For example when I play bass the timing sounds too much like the guitar but the two are really separate here and I like that. Cool song lyrics. Classic Jiguma right here. Way to go Neil!

Thanks for the listen and the very kind comment. The bass just fell together on this. It's been much more difficult getting everything to work together in the live situation though - I think we'll eventually get it sounding good, but at the moment it stumbles a little at a gig.
Glad you liked it.

Excellent
Great concept and so well executed. Really liked the key change around 1.30. The vocals have a unique quality of kind of tired and disillusioned which reflects the state of mind of the possible protagonist. Only song on a similar theme I could think of was "Hungry heart" by Mr Springsteen. Enjoyed mark

You have such a great style with your vocals. Really effective and shows you don't need pyrotechnics to be impressive.

The musical bed is also brilliant. A real Santana feel about the sound.

And before I forget, great lyrics as well!

Also shows you don't need a great voice to be "interesting" :) The instrumental stuff was easier to do than it sounds - I have a few standard settings in Logic these days which give me a reliable sound - especially for guitars and bass, I find the Logic Studio/JamPack midi drum and percussion loops a dream to work with because they are so clean and varied (and are really easy to manipulate to get the variations that make it sound "real").
My new discovery on this track was using both mics at once to get the right vocal sound - I still have a bit of tweaking to do there, but I think it's going to make a difference in the long term - I'm hoping Jim Bouchard gets to hear it as he's got such great ears.
Anyway, thanks for the kind comments - always appreciated.

Hardly seems worthwile....
...coming for a listen, when there's no chance at all of anything close to firsties...

I've often wondered about the ability of a person, in this day and age, to vanish...

I continue to enjoy the evolving presence of the jiguma Tele lead lines... Has a bit of Fran's rhythmic approach, between 'Evil Ways' and 'Sunny Como Va'.... Nicely tight between the drums, percussion, bass and guitars... Not a whisker of space between 'em... Sounding effortlessly on the beat and in the groove...

Somebody's going to want to start a TV program on this theme.... and a shortened version of this tune would be the opening musical theme....

Hey Neil - this is an unusual topic to sing about - I like your viewpoint on the subject. This song has some clever lyrics ("You love them but you leave them) and the musical changes between verses and choruses are interesting and unexpected. Some nice soloing too. The sound is full and rich. With your songs Neil, I put the headphones on, hit play, then sit back and relax cuz I know I will enjoy the ride. Thanks!

Neil, I fully understand the battle with feeling comfortable with vocals. I sing all the time in my band, but there is something more difficult about recording a vocal performance for all to listen and listen again. No worries here, you have a very stylized approach and it works for you. The guitar work is great here as usual, and I love the fact that I hear a P bass here. Nice job!

i am very familiar with the subject (most of the homeless people in LA are "temporarily" homeless). difficult situation. Nice choice
of chords for the rhythm track. The leading guitar has a fitting riff that defines the changes in the progression. I like the triangle as well. This was great!
The hook alone sucked me right in and I was not disappointed. This is a very cool, mysterioso type song and you have to like it! Now Neal, don't poke me in the eyes--I think your vocal mix was about as dry as you should take it and I don't mean it's too dry, just that you probably hit the right formula and just don't touch that knob (I lately have been aiming for the same sound and know what a jinx it is trying to achieve). Thanks for the good work! Michael

Drumming support?
Here's the extent of my drumming support: when Neil wrote to me asking if I'd like to take a swing, I wrote back saying that "what [he'd written] is what I'd aspire to make". I consider myself blessed that he keeps asking me to collab with him when he clearly is very adept at "putting a breathing, natural rhythm section in place" (again, my words).

Regarding the rest of the song, I'll again paraphrase from my original email: "I'm convinced [Neil] couldn't write a bad song if [he] wanted to. [He] really [has] a knack ... Love the textures and tones (and theme) here. Very dark, and I like the lyrical twist late".

Who knew that when I wrote the email, I'd be crafting my song comment at the same time?

It sounds like rock and roll to me, Neil. With a latin flavor. Good job handling the various roles here... songwriter, musician, recording engineer. Yeah, you're getting good at that!
