Description
Recently I was driving behind some kids with 500 punk rock stickers on their back window. When I pulled up beside them, I saw that they were perfectly polished punk rockers that had followed the Punk Rock Handbook with an enviable attention to detail. Probably bought their anarchy jean jacket at Target with their pre-torn Ramones t-shirt and studded wrist bands. When I was a punk their age, I went to the pet section of the grocery store to get (steal) a dog collar to wear. Pathetic, sure, but not as pathetic as using a debit card to buy the things that make you look like you sleep outside.

When I was working on Ocracoke with the cool dudes from the Transcontinentals, there was a guitar track that Tempie offered up for the tune, but for some reason, it got pushed aside for more banjo. I loved the noisy gritty riff, so I stole it and it actually wrote this song for me. I shared it with Tempie and he suggested I build up the drums towards the end of the song. Good idea.

Hope you like it, ya posers!

Lyrics
YOU WALK AROUND WITH YOUR DREADLOCKS ON
YOU WALK AROUND WITH YOUR NEW DOCS ON
YOU WALK AROUND WITH YOUR TATTOOS ON
YOU WALK AROUND WITH YOUR BLUE SHOES ON

YOU TRY TOO HARD
LOOK LIKE YOU'RE SLEEPING IN THE BACK YARD
YOU LOOK LIKE YOU DON'T CARE
BUT YOU'RE FIXING YOUR HAIR
AND YOU'RE PRACTICING YOUR POSES
AND YOUR EMPTY HEADED GLARE

YOU CAN'T COMPETE
WITH THE CRAZY PEOPLE THAT ARE REALLY LIVING ON THE STREET
THERE IS NO MYSTERY TO YOU
AND EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO
IS LIKE A STICKER ON YOUR WINDOW
FOR THE WHOLE WORLD TO VIEW

YOU THINK YOU'RE SO WELL READ
YOU QUOTE THE WORKS OF THE DEAD
I READ A WARNING LABEL THAT I FOUND MORE INTERESTING THAN YOU

well layered
the kids had it coming, damn teenagers...but seriously, I really dig what you did with the vocals, very engaging. The synth was an immediate hook, and only grew more compelling as the song progressed. I love the last verse, it's great, but I don't like the first verse. Either way, I really like the song.

It's good to see
that there's a MacJames sticker on their mom's Honda Odyssey. Or whatever that is. I love the sentiment. It's a favorite of mine. And the classic 5EA description. The song? Eh.

ok fine
I like the song. Even though it's not REAL punk rock. Did I miss this in the developmental phase? I would have liked to see a double-time dancey beat come around. But maybe it's left out intentionally. Leaving the bounce out of it emphasizes your sneer. I hope I die before I get old.

turning rebellion into money
I know how you feel.
It's great if these kids are getting into the music but I see people buying Ramones t-shirts in TK Max and I feel like asking then what their favorite Ramones track is.
Anyway.... great track and liked the build up towards the end and that last line nails it.
Great stuff Bob

Favorite Ramones Track
There's a girl that works at the Sweetbay (grocery store) and her name tag says "I Like Punk Music". That in itself cracks me up everytime I see it, but when I asked her to name just one of her favorite "punk music" bands, she said Pearl Jam.

LOL!!

I'm brave. I swear - you have got some new mojo that is just killer. This is such a great song - from the low hum start to the space wobble ending. Really well done - and once again - those vocal lessons were worth every penny Katy paid for them.

do you remember hair crimpers
back in the day the punk look was more hap hazard but their was always the suburban punks that would come to the city to squat and think its cool I would ask them what was your home was like they would say I couldn't stand the swimming pool the cull de sac the loving parents so I decided to live in the streets of the lower east side. So I would say can I move in your house and take your place. Bob your singing on this is tops and the mix so clear another one going into the 5 extra list! thanks!

Is that the raw Hondo?
Vintage Dorsey. Being an old school West Coast punk, I can relate. Toyota Corolla Station wagon with a DK bumper sticker and surf racks on top. Wearing green jeans with a Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers shirt, hair shaved on the sides, rocking to the Minutemen.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout.

Always dig your tunes.

Raw Hondo
and a full throttle Tempie guitar riff through glass packs and wheelie bars.

West Coast punk was a unique thing, wasn't it? Who could've predicted that the DKs and Black Flag and the Germs and bands like that would come out of hippie California? But where else could it come from?

Mike Watt rules.

everybody's a poser
you've got to pay top dollar to look truly homeless. but the smell, that's free.

the poser kids I can live with, but the poser rich and famous rock stars make me want to hurl. neil young is a great example, singing his earnest tunes about poverty in his thrift shop brogans and corduroys. it's damn easy to romanticize the working man when you haven't had to work for anything but fun in the last thirty years. that's not bitterness btw, that's rapier wit. good tune bobbie d.

cool song! Like the signature 5extra synths and vocals.
Nice use of the guitar riff that was defeated by my banjo riff (just kiddin').
like the metaphor about the stickers.
this is quite timely given a lot of press about the "backlash against hipsters" (Mark Greif et al.) although perhaps punx are different than hipsters? I'm too old to know...

I dig the lyrics and the overdriven but not crazy guitars are perfect.

White Guy Vibe
Guilty as charged.

I really liked the overdriven guitar too. I didn't touch it, other than cut and paste here and there... oh yeah, I did control the volume.... and some panning. The rest was Craig. I'd like to peek over his shoulder and see his guitar settings. It'd be worth the trip to the gin mill where he records.

The bassline was inspired by the guitar, then came the synth parts that I wanted to build upon the bass structure.

Thanks for listening.
