Description
FUSION. Dubstep is kind of awesome rhythmically speaking, so I decided to fuse it with blues harmonica (which is also heavily rhythmic) and see what would happen. The result is above. It's influenced by Satan and Adam's "Thunky Fing," Clapton's interpretation of "Crossroads Blues," Skip James' vocal work, and, of course, by random dubstep songs that I found myself listening to and finding mildly interesting as this piece was in its infancy. Again, I tried to diverge from traditional 'blues lyrics,' and use my own voice. I hope you all enjoy!

Lyrics
There is a sky on my temple,
It is a bone-dry descent.

There is a sky on my temple,
And it will hail till you repent.

There is a statue in the ocean,
There is a whine in my pulse.

There is a statue in the ocean
With its liver picked by gulls.

I’ll fill my lungs with leaden night,
Until each breath is paid in full.

This is rather interesting. I really dig the lyrics. The combination of the harp and the synths is cool. But what I really like is your vocal when you sing in your higher register. You have a Canned Heat singing Going Up in the Country vibe. Maybe go with a bigger reverb on the vocal so it matches the harp and synths a bit more.

the high register
took a few takes haha.I glad you like my experiment, I am definitely considering delving into it further. Bigger reverb? That's actually a really good idea, I may just go and do that now. Thanks for the feedback!

Different kind of fusion
than we've ever heard around here I rekon. Sounds like you're getting the hang of the blues harp! Keep it up!

working on
controlling my bent notes for a few minutes each day, trying to incorporate more speed into my playing (getting eighth notes on beat, etc). I think I'm making some progress, especially given that I had to almost relearn the instrument after this summer. Thanks for the support!

Cheers, man

i like this. you continue to create a unique and raw sound...although at times you can tell too obviously where you've punched in because the levels change noticeably. liked the reference to prometheus....very existential.

punched in
That was intentional -- I was trying to simulate an amp, because I do not currently own a harmonica mic. I can definitely mess with the levels to help that along though. I know it was noticeable in the harp segment after the first vocal verse. And aye, Prometheus with a twist. Glad you liked it! Thanks, as always, for the insightful feedback.

Also, to you, and anybody else who is reading, did the harp overdub near the end (the part with two layers of harmonica) work?

Cheers!

Likes alot
but the harmonica is a bit loud and piercing. Other than that it rocks on!

loud and piercing
I agree, which is why I've just remixed it with the harmonica levels collectively lower. I thought about slapping lots of reverb on the vocals like alackbass suggested, but decided that I needed at least one somewhat traditional aspect as I am trying to fuse the old/traditional with the new. Maybe I'll post it here, but there aren't any real differences, save for the levels. Thanks for the critique, and glad you enjoyed!

Cheers

This piece is stronger rhythmically then the others you've posted, and the blues harp works pretty well against the rhythms. It sounds like you're making progress on your vocals and harp playing.

What I like about this
is that it's totally unlike anything else you're likely to find here. Great great stuff. Adventurous, brave and fearless. And damn good to listen to as well. Nice one Ben!

Funktastic
Yes, I agree with several others here in that you are making very concise and excellent strides with your singing--very apparent here (this could be your best vocal work to date--both in technique and delivery). I liked the dichotomy of contrast utilized here and your last stanza on this is "classic". You are someone to watch for! Keep up the great work! Michael

it might be dubstep
but it smacks of a beefheart vocal - this would be a great tune to have a go at mashing/moshing/remixing - whatever the lingo is these days! Creative energy! Great stuff - Rich

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
