Description
I've always wanted to be able to just sit down and perform something with my acoustic live - very much back to my earlier style. This is a roughish version of a little tune I wrote one night after talking about "getting away for a while" with Jan. It's been over a year now since we got back from Switzerland, and we had a particularly cold few nights in a row ..........

It's just "man, guitar and microphone" in a single take - plus Logic, Mac and Ozone.

Lyrics
Just Right Tonight
©2010 Neil Porter

We’re living day to day
We’re going out tonight, tonight
You want us to get away
That sounds just right, tonight, just right

Let’s take some budget flight
Head north to where the sea is warm
Everything’s going to turn out right
We’re going to leave this winter storm

Let’s go where the sun’s still shining
Let’s go where the rivers meet the sea
This cloud’s got a silver lining
Right now north is where I want to be
North is where I want to be

We’ll take the long way home
We’ll get the very last plane we can
Turn off the mobile phone
Get back to where this thing began

Let’s go where the sun’s still shining
Let’s go where the rivers meet the sea
This cloud’s got a silver lining
Right now north is where I want to be
North is where I want to be

We’re living day to day
We’re going out tonight, tonight
You want us to get away
That sounds just right, tonight, just right

Oh Yes
just perfect Neil, great acoustic song, lovely acoustic tone and vocals are superb.
A great recording, so clear and clean, I love to hear just an acoustic guitar and a vocal, good lyrics and very much enjoyed!

Ha!
Andy, I went through that thought process myself - even up to the point of "I could make a video", but at this stage I'll just leave things as they are - I'm starting to think of putting together a small acoustic set with the band (or with bits of it). Thanks for the listen.

Hardest thing to do (IMO). I still haven't worked up the guts to do a "man, guitar, and microphone" recording. Great recording quality. I love these chord changes!

Neal
the acoustic is a dream to record (and sounds equally good at a gig). There's a pair of pickups built in - as they say on the Seagull www page:

"The Quantum II is a hybrid system combining an exceptionally responsive saddle transducer and high quality electret microphone in a simple, but very effective, configuration. The microphone capsule, specifically designed for use in this application, is mounted at the end of a 6 inch flexible boom integral to the side mount electronics. Four rotary controls adjust microphone presence / phase, overall volume, and saddle transducer bass & treble. Electronics and controls are packaged in an easy to use and logical format complemented with a finely crafted pewter cover plate.
Microphone signal can be added and blended either in phase or out of phase with the saddle transducer signal. This allows the user to cancel (or notch) potentially undesirable frequencies while accentuating others. This flexibility in combining signals results in outstanding clarity and richness of tone."

It works really well, and seems to suit my style perfectly.
Thanks for the kind words.

Sounds like
you're in the room here up close and personal LOL. Brilliant clarity and I'm jealous of the picking for sure, because it just sets the mind flicking from thought to thought as do your lyrics..... sort of, thinking out loud, reflecting.... really enjoyed this Neil, regards M

Do more of this, Neil....
It has a lot of presence and immediacy.... Then after a while you can add in a little simple bass...

Reminds me of some of the White Album demos... You can imagine how more could be added, but then you just get to like it how it is, and any more starts sounding false....

You MIGHT try a little less Ozone, just to let the atmosphere of the performance breathe a little, but I'm not quibbling on that score... This is neat...
jiguma said 2397 days ago (November 6th, 2010)
Aren't you ever wrong Ed?
The Ozone comment is pretty accurate - I just used close to my stock Ozone settings and liked it and left it that way. A little more subtlety might have worked (but then, not creaking my chair at the end of the take might have helped too).

I'm hoping for a PBGB version of this with just me and Chris our bass player on his big (and ridiculously valuable) double bass.

Otherwise I think this might stay just me ..... and ...... me :)

I've just had 3 weeks off from PBGB and have written this and 2 other new songs in that time. Hopefully the drought is over, mojo found :)

Thanks as always for listening Ed.

Cheers from Oz,
N

Gentle and sweet!
Yeah, my kind of music. As you know I like it straight from the hip most of the time and this one is a straight shooter. Nice little back and forth acoustic guitar riff, good tone and then the bridge comes in and gives it complexity and variety. I've been working on one like this. I have the back and forth part down but can't get the bridge. Isn't as easy as you make it sound here. More!

sometimes you just wanna get up and go. things aren't too bad up here in Brisbane :) but a change is always good, windows down and stereo roaring. this is a nice and honest performance, Neil, and the chords in the chorus are very interesting. I hope you get that holiday soon.

Solid songwriting, beautiful picking & tone on the acoustic. The bridge is a nice contrast to the verses. Raspy vocals bring the emotion.

I do not know why
but this has a touch of the Harry Nilssons about it,I think that it is the apparent simplicity of the presentation i.e one vox one git ,one man but a complex riff repeating and underscoring a wistful sounding lyric.....sub the guitar with a piano (not that there is anything wrong with the guitar !I hasten to add)and I think Mr Nilsson could have sung on
it.Nice one blue,seeya

Great
Neil, I love your songwriting. Seriously you should be famous, being a teacher I hear TONS of music all the time (my students bring ipods- I like to let them choose what they want to learn, also good for my ears to quickly figure stuff out)Your songs are so much better than 95% of the well known performers that I hear. 1 take- you're stealing my technique!

Is it about Greenland? ;-)
It's a beautiful song, and I really like the simplicity of it all; just voice and guitar. There's something profoundly compelling about that. I'd love to hear more songs by you done this way. Not to suggest there's anything wrong with the more elaborate arrangements you do; you have tremendous production chops!

It's interesting and cool to hear a song use "north" in the same way that most songs in North America use "south"! If I were to head north, I'd hit Greenland...

One man, one guitar
Beyond the crisp presentation, clear singing, concise lyrics and a well-plucked guitar, what I really like about this production is how the simplicity of the performance reflects the whole idea driving the song: let's you and me get back to the basics, baby.

Good luck finding that budget flight!

Today there's been a sharp, chilly wind coming down from the north. As Composer Clark noted - we're all dreaming of heading south. One man's up is another man's down : )

sweet
Neil.
To get through a performance like this with no obvious mistakes would be nigh on impossible for me. You breezed it. Serious talent. If it wasnt for cut and paste i'd have no tunes. I really admire this. My name is Ted23 as thats average amount of takes I need to get a decent recording :)
Very nice

Great sound
Man I love your voice. Pure gold. The guitar is pure and sounds great. I admire your confidence, doing a single "live take". It has a great live feel. I haven't done anything in years straight through. My limit tends to be about 16 bars. Guess I'm not ready to hit the pub scene any time soon...

SEASONS
NOT to put to fine a point on it, but we're just heading into winter (Water - 34F, Ambient - 44F with 18knt "kicker"), SO, that means you're heading into Spring/Summer, No? Maybe you might better stay near the Ol' Sapphire Bay, Brother!

Guitar sounds like a crystal-clear Bell.
Terrific Capture and presence, comme d'habitude.

Nice.

Comparisons....?
I usually don't make comparisons when I listen to someone's music because everyone has his or her particular take on things musical. So I hope you won't mind a reference to Jim Croce in relation to this wonderful song and your performance of it. I am really drawn into this number by the simplicity of every single element: repetitive harmony, your exactly playing, the quiet and restrained vocal, and the thoughtful lyrics. I think it's the perfect song and I would be delighted to hear much more of this kind of writing and performing. Just Right Tonight...or any night, for that matter.
