Description
Our venerable resident dragon Drakonis, also known to us mere mortals as Eduard, some years back wrote note-by-note a beautiful ambient piece of music called Ember. Sometime later he revised it, reflecting his growing knowledge of music, mixing and production, and invited other members to re-mix or re-arrange or add to his original -- you know, a collaboration. Last week I worked up the nerve to ask him if I could take Ember out for a stroll. Being the gracious gentleman (and dragon) he is, he consented warmly, and quickly. You can listen to Ember (Revisited) here.

Fifty-three other members have added to or re-mixed Eduard's MIDI files, many of them are sadly no longer available, but all of them are original.

If you haven't already pressed the play button, go ahead and listen. Meantime I'll give a few details for those who are into that sort of thing. Otherwise, turn up the volume a little, put on your headphones, and take a five-minute break.

The GarageBand file Eduard provided consisted of nine tracks, being a mix of synths and orchestral instruments - strings & flute. So I went through, listening carefully, and changed out every instrument. At first, I made obvious substitutions such as cello for violin and bassoon for flute. Eventually I had a nice, little, variant on the Ember theme; a slightly different color or tone, but it was not enough!

I threw in five percussion tracks, and changed every original instrument but one to synths (I swapped the Orchestral Deep Organ for Eduard's synth organ ;-). Most are Apple synths, available with GB, and one is the free synth Crystal. Some use presets and some have been fiddled with; some have had effects added and some are naked. One track (a doubled bass track) was deleted. Ember is such an amazing, resilient, minimalist piece, I think it must be difficult to make her ugly. I had an awful lot of fun with this: I think I might do it again, sometime.

Meanwhile, I am very proud to present, a new Ember, NovaEmber. I sincerely hope you enjoy it. If it sounds at all good to you, it's because of the dragon's marvellous mind and his MIDI files, and, I hope, a few things I've learned here in the past two years. Thank you.

Thanks Bill. I'm really pleased with the way this turned out, myself. (I may not be so gentle with her next time, though ;-)
Also, I think it was the response I got to my remix of your Bells that gave me the confidence to tackle Ember. So, again, thanks.

Wonderfully dark,
with little embers of light peeking out of the darkness. A very sensitive take on Eduard's original, Richard.

A worthwhile and worthy remake my friend, and very well done.

Nice job here! I like the spaciousness of the mix, and the percussion you added. Gets almost Kraftwerk-like in the middle!

Actually, he helped quite a lot with that panning of the tom sweep. Thank you Karen. I'm glad you liked the other bits, too.

Ember for November
Beautiful. Careful dynamics. The percussion is well thought out and works very well in imparting a slightly different personality to Drak's original. Good work on the description also. I always enjoy reading about the process.

Most of the beauty is Eduard's: I just added a little makeup. We had several discussions trying to get the percussion just right. I enjoy reading descriptions, as well. It's disappointing to read something like: Just a little something I tossed off, or under hard and software: the usual. Glad you approve.

Ember
Hey Richard, I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. First off it was a great track from Eduard, and it stands on it's own. That being said, I really like the way this moves...I love the panning tricks with the drums as they slowly move east to west and then back east....great idea....that i will be stealing in the near future. ;) Great job!

Some people call it stealing, some call it being influenced by. Personally, I think it's just cross-pollination: I probably stole the idea from someone else. I'd like to steal some of your bass lines ;-)
Thanks, Chris.

Kaleidoscope
Probably haven't spelt that right! Does anyone remember the tubular thing that you twisted to get weird and fabulous colours if you looked into it? (My beloved Mac has just sorted the erroneous spelling!) Reminds me of this piece, in common with a lot of ambient music. Brilliantly put together, and effective to my ear, though i've always lacked the imagination and the smarts to really travel with mood music for very long.

Enjoyed it. Impressive.

Sweet
A great piece of ambient. Subtle sounds, enhanced by gentle echo. Somewhere halfway I find the sounds a bit too bare, the sound with the buzz in the beginning and whatever you're using at the end have a bit more character.

Another great take
that I almost missed... It is my 50th though so I've got a few ;-) And most, if not all, are really, really very nice! Including this one, for sure. Personally I have still to become a real member of MJ, that is doing my own version of Ember. To be able to contribute I think I may still have a few more things to learn first... Thanks for having fun with this ;-)

Wow, this is a very deeply considered peice of music, absolutely fantastic! Beautifully layered and flowing, relaxing, yet not sleepy. I love the slow pan from right to left in the first part, that was so subtle in it's approach that it was in the left space of my head before I even realized it! Really a well crafted production!
