Anima (w/Bud)

Description
"There is in the unconscious of each man an inherent image of woman who helps him to understand her being."

The anima is the personification of all female psychological tendencies in the psyche of a man, including feelings, moods, intuition, receptivity for the irrational, the ability for personal love, a feel for nature, and the man's attitude toward the unconscious.

I'm not one for Carl Jung (the man may as well have been using a Ouiji board), but some of the ideas are interesting. I had done this song with Bud before and it was kind of a Velvet Underground number. Awhile back I got bored and was cleaning crap off the HD and stumbled across it. I ended up doing a remix, decided it was lame and put it away. Now I don't know what I think of it, so you be the judge. Here's the original version Bud and I did (he also did one with DavisAmerica):
http://www.macjams.com/song/37500

I took the original instrumental track and ran it through a filter and then put a gate on it. sounds like a synth but it's not. Did a couple of other synth drone parts and made new drums for it. Drum programming is really fun; I used to dread it, but I really enjoy geeking out on it now. Kevin (Bud) sent me a new guitar part that was real grinding, and I put a sidechain on it that was triggered by the hihats. cut it up a little more and ended up with the stuttering guitar part you hear now. This whole song is an experiment in learning how to manipulate sound and automate effects. Maybe you'll like it.

Hey Michael - this sounds great
Your production has really grown leaps and bounds lately. Great use of triggers and sidechains. Great name for a bar "Triggers and Sidechains".

thanks for the kind words, i have been trying to stray from my lo-fi roots and get better on the production side of things. thanks for the link too, couldn't figure out where it was. I'm thinking a remix of level of actual may be in order.

Wasn't too sure when it first started but soon got into the feel and groove of this.
Spacemen3 meet a trippy Nine Inch sNails with Ian Brown from Stone Roses singing.
Loving the snatches of guitar in the middle and all the placings and mixing of each element within this.
cool stuff
enjoyed

Trippy
This sounds like a mantra. Man, I could float on this.
Went to the net looking for anima. Interesting idea. It sounds too poetic and man centric though (after saying that I think my anima is in level Eve ;-)
Hey, "Level Eve" sounds like another nice name for a bar.

you know I love trippy music. the anima sounds okay at first, and then when you read more, it''s a bunch of crap. Jung claims it's the female archetype in everyone that causes irrational impulsive behavior. science fiction.

Hi Michael.....
This is awsome my friend. Don't know much about anima. Thought it was Japanese cartoons!! Silly me.

Excellent experiment and details. Such a successful mix.

Take care.

guess the trance thing comes from all of the gating type effects I used on this one. thanks a bunch. Jung was definitely interesting. guess i'm down on him at the moment as I have a crazy professor who is a Jungian therapist. huh? is that the same as a ghostbuster?

darkly satisfying
Feels like the ground underneath you liquifies, moving slowly and unstoppably like some kind of black lava. That pulsing synth is powerful stuff. The beginning mmediately reminded by of Hybrid's refined layering, but with a more subtle rhythmic treatment.
Vocals fit great, could be pronounced in the mix, with the reverb underlining the distant, detached overall feel of this track. Powerful stuff. And what a contrast to your absolutely outstanding "When the luster is gone"!

michael2 said 2331 days ago (November 10th, 2010)
thanks
glad you like, but you're too kind. the pulsing synth is actually the entire instrumental mix of the original version squeezed through a bunch of manipulations. I spent hours on it to see what kind of noise I could make and yet sound nothing like the original. thanks again.

sidechained
Hey 2,

This is really dark and sweet. Can't say I get all the tech stuff you described, but i don't care. the results are really amazing. Dirty and clean at the same time in a weird and wired way. The vocals weave a tight web around you and slip know forms when you aren't looking. Oh, and I'm with you on Jung, the guy was a hack.

hah
the most interesting thing about Jung is that he hated his mom because she was a mystic, and then he turns around and credits the collective unconscious with being the cause of human behavior. watch out for my next Jung tune "mother spirit and the old woman."

thanks for checking it out.

What
you did with the drums is wicked. Clever idea to use the HHats as triggers. I used to dread programming drums to but now it's one of the most enjoyable aspects for me (although i'm not great.
In places the vox remind me of the vocals on those reverse tracks the stone roses used to do.... But without being in reverse if you get what I mean. A touch of Tim Burgess too and some of the Charlatans more hypnotic moments. Very cool song indeed
Corporal Beef said 2331 days ago (November 11th, 2010)

This is great! I love the sounds you've created, and the vibe of the vocals is spot on. Your production skills really shine though on this piece. It's going on the iPod. Thanks for posting.

Synth Drone/Grinding Sidechain
Really cool tune guys. How come my experiments never have results like these? I love those blorps and bleeps like you can only imagine if you really know me.

M- I like how your vocals sit in the mix and how girlie they get as you personify your unconscious robot psyche, or something like that. Sorry man. That is way over my head, but I totally love the noises it makes. 64 crayons/built in sharpener.

5+ minutes of bliss in Valrico.

Thanks,
