Description
I was feeling abnormally patriotic and Canadian throughout the past few days -- perhaps it was a combination of the Gordon Lightfoot and Tragically Hip listening binges I went on (Gord Downie sings "Tom Thomson came paddling past, I'm pretty sure it was him...he said bring on the brand new renaissance, 'cause I think I'm ready..."), perhaps it's because it's the middle of November and I'm wondering where the hell the winter coats are, but I decided to take a stance on what 'Canadian art' is, and this is what I came out with. So poets like Guy Gavriel Kay, A.F. Moritz, artists like Mr. Thomson and the Group of Seven (you know that painting of that tree on a ridge? I offhandedly try to capture it a few times), musicians like Mr. Lightfoot, the Hip, the Grape of Wrath, the Weakerthans...I'm commenting on all of them. Interestingly, though, the song came out of a completely different aesthetic -- I was listening to a eulogy that Bob Dylan wrote for Woody Guthrie (not a song) and I had been listening to a fair amount of Johnny Cash...the song above is what came out. Enjoy!

Lyrics
You are piled fragments beyond dirt,
Beyond the cringing cowl of dusk,
Here – the lies, the lyrics, the love songs stripped,
Your bodies are gaping open, their husks.

And the silent ranks of kneeling corn
Sway like an elegy across the sun,
And the shambling rise of city skies
Looms in your eyes when the verse steers your tongue.

Yeah bury me for I
Will not strain against the earth.
Yeah spread this ash and I
Will chase the remnants of my birth.

And the heavy silences will alight
On the furrowed brows of the sea,
And the cringing dusk will unravel the husk
That bears the faint tread you would paint through the trees.

Yeah bury me for I
Will not strain against the earth.
Yeah spread this ash and I
Will chase the remnants of my birth...

Progress
You are definitely improving in all aspects. I think the next thing to focus on is your vocal tone. Try this... when you are singing, put your hand on your lower abdomen (below your belly button) and sing from there. I know it sounds wierd but it really has helped me when my vocals start getting thin sounding. Also experiment with not holding so many words for so long. I think your style would work great with some shorter half spoken words like Johnny Cash used to do.

I only offer this because, a) you seem to implement ideas effectively and b) you are improving by leaps and bounds as a result. I think this will shore up your vocals. Might also want to do some vocal exercises, they have some on youtube. Some make you feel like an idiot though I will warn you, lol.

BTW, this is your best song to date hands down. Each song you do seems to be an improvement over the last.

as always
the detailed comments are a huge help. I HAVE been doing some vocal exercises, but I haven't been focusing on them by any means. They totally make you feel like an idiot, but I can see how their constant repetition would have a marked effect on one's singing.

I only improve with every post because of all the feedback I get -- thanks so much for being such a big part of that!

Cheers

This piece has a much stronger rhythmic feel to it then earlier posts. A nice picked part on the guitar, and the vocals are starting to ride the groove.

Also...
EQ can help vocal tone tons... Charles has great suggestions... Add to that a tiny bit of reverb and EQ and your vocals will start to shine!

love
the melody, instrumentation and performance here, really dug that harmonica, and the way you bent some of the guitar notes was tight, haha and charles your posts lately have been cracking me up

"Might also want to do some vocal exercises, they have some on youtube. Some make you feel like an idiot though I will warn you, lol."

Indeed, haha and doing them in front of strangers can make you feel like even more of an idiot =P and that's why you know people wouldn't do them if it wasn't effective!!

the thing is
after a while, you get an instinct for imagery like this -- it takes true thought to produce something truly original, but stuff like this becomes intuitive enough that you don't really need to think about it.

In short, it's a reflex, and nothing to be particularly proud of, though I am very glad you liked the lyric.

Cheers!

You
have come a long way in 4 months. This is very good on all levels. Touch it with a little reverb or delay and this would stand on it's own. You are a hellofa songwriter kid. I will love to see what you can do in a few more months... a year or two... I am a huge Johnny Cash fan and I could hear him doin this one. I would have ended it on the 4 note hook that runs throughout the song. Thats just a taste thing though.
Peace
Guy

The 4 notes
at the end of the turnaround or riff that starts the song between 11 and 15 seconds into the song. I could just hear it ending the song. I often get musical terms mixed up as having never been trained properly. Great song Ben.

art
nice hook....and your harmonica is getting good. this is over five minutes and no diversions, so your lyrics need to be powerful in order to maintain interest....and they are....although i wonder whether you're trying to cram in as much imagery as you can. in fact i'd be very interested to hear exactly what you mean with each line. you must be related to joni mitchell...this reminds me of 'tin angels'.

weird things
just happened with macjams. Anyways -- yes, it is definitely a lyrical vice of mine to over-poeticize. Joni is from the same country as I am, but otherwise...no dice. Glad you liked the hook and the harp, and that you think it sustains itself for five minutes. I'll PM you a breakdown of what I mean by each line, although I don't know how helpful that would be. Thanks for the feedback!

Cheers

hi
You are blessed with many talents. Firstly, as a song writer your ability is clearly on display.I went to listen to a few more of your tunes just to check. It takes some skill to write words that are so poetic and flowing. You seem to have an incredible maturity about you. It is great to see such an enthusiasm about your work, from you and from others making comments, a clear sign that what you have to offer is special. I think you need to polish some of your ideas and take a bit more time in creating your tracks. This is a long track, so you need to be careful about how you fill that time. The guitar plays the same thing over and over and sounds like an obvious loop. With a vocal that sounds so loose it is conflicting to me. You need a bit more variation in this song as there is not many instruments. You could try that with the vox and guitar, try to make some space for them to be heard in. Imagine trying to create a space with them, that might help. Hey, but you dont need any help really, because you have the most important things covered... you have ability and drive.. that is all you need.

re: looped guitar

Bob Dylan was born in Minnesota, so he's practically Canadian right?

I rarely hear under-produced pieces like this. So bare bones. But that works here, because the lyrics are so demanding of attention. Production polish might just ruin the whole thing. As far as using loops for tempo, you could always sing to a click track. No big deal really.

Impressed!
As Charles said further up, you just keep getting better and better.

First, I think you have a definite intuitive feel for a good lyric - words that are well beyond most writers. To go with that, you seem to have a terrific sense of phrasing. Your vocals aren't great in the sense that you sing perfectly in key and have perfect enunciation, but they are different and have a rich character behind them. For me "different and rich" will beat "perfect" any day, and I think this is what makes your songs so intriguing.

Your guitar style is simple, but very effective in this style of song, and your harp playing sounds really good to me.

I think your singing will get stronger - but hopefully not perfect - over time and with more experience. I'm not sure if you do any live work, but that's where you will really develop your chops, both vocally and instrumentally. Live playing as a soloist can be a little overwhelming, so if you can, try to find a few other capable (but interesting) players to back you up. That would make the move to live playing easier.

As far as the production goes, you have recorded the parts well as far as I can tell - everything is crisp and clean. It sounds a little like everything is pretty much panned close to centre - maybe a little panning (not too much - maybe 3 or 4 only) of the vocal to one side and the harp to the other might add a little breadth to your sound. I think someone mentioned a little 'verb on your vocal. I'd rather suggest you put a little across the whole track, just to give it a little more depth.

All in all a bloody good post - I think you're high on a few people's "MJer to watch" lists.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Return visit here. I'm impressed with the improvement in your vocals Ben. I like the concept here too. I enjoy a number of Canadian Artists, like Spirit Of The West, Loreena McKinnet, Captain Tractor, and a host of others. (And my favorite TV show of all time is Dure South. LOVE Paul Gross's work in general...) And last but not least, my mother was French Canadian! Ha ha...
