Storm Warning

Description
This song just seemed to write itself early one morning when I was mucking round with a slightly upbeat chord progression. Hopefully the mix and mastering are a bit better than my first song (which I am going to overhaul). See what you think!

Lyrics
Storm Warning – Peter Bowen (2010)

The air is still like it’s waiting for something
A calm ocean mirrors back the sky
Pressure’s rising, and with a fatal attraction
My mystery girl’s got that look in her eye

Experience tells you that things are too quiet
The atmosphere is too heavy with threat
A storm is coming, it will cause a sea riot
On the horizon there’s no sign of it yet

Storm warning, I’m running for cover
Storm warning, I’m about to discover
Storm warning, how strong her winds can be
It’s time to get out of here and let the girl run free

Clouds are building way down in the south, yeah
They’re moving fast and pushing up this way
A hint of breeze comes a calling on my skin
It’s hard to judge just how long I can stay

Rumbles of thunder are heard on the south wind
Sheet lightning rips a crack in the sky
The wind is stronger, waves are starting to build up
My soul gets tossed and it’s time to pass by

Storm warning, I’m running for cover
Storm warning, I’m about to discover
Storm warning, how strong her winds can be
It’s time to get out of here and let the girl run free

Repeat

I like the
song. The seems ok. The horns at the beginning don't sound real. I'd replace them with something or work on making them more realistic.

I've heard that midi horns are very difficult. Very cool song. Liking the organ work too!

Horns of a dilema :)
Hi Mark, Thanks for the listen and the feedback. I agree with your sentiments re the GB midi Dub Horns. I have since downloaded a few other midi brass instruments and I will play around with them and see if I can make the horn section sound a bit more realistic. Appreciate your encouragement.

good effort here. very busy vocals going on and i would agree with mark holbrook about the sound of the horns etc. but this is well put together and has a pretty cool identity. cheers

another welcome to Macjams
A very nice song... I enjoyed the lyrics and the performance, and the mix was rather good. You asked for feedback... my suggestions would be that the song is a little too fast for the lyric delivery, it causes your singing of many of the lines to feel rushed. You may want to try slowing this down 10% or so and sing and play at that pace, and see if it rolls better. The "horns" (saxes?) at the beginning were doubled and on top of each other in time and panning, perhaps give them harmonies to play, and different note lengths, and slightly pan them away from each other? And the overall mix... levels all seem pretty good and clear, but the panning of things is a little "scattered"... (at least in headphones.) I would move all the percussion closer to (but not on) center. Same with the saxes and organ and rhythm guitar. I say this because the mix feels a little "unbalanced" in my ears. There are tricks to "spread" certain instruments out, so they don't interfere with the vox in the center, but they aren't way off to one side either.

But overall, this is fun, and really well performed, I enjoyed your singing voice too! Look forward to more, and I hope the above is useful feedback, and I hope you are as honest and critical with my music as well. This is a great site for learning all this complicated stuff.

Drakonis

High quality feedback
Hi Drakonos, really appreciate the detailed, constructive feedback. I have been thinking about the rushed lyrics since Ciasm mentioned the "busy" nature of the song in an earlier post, and I agree with both of you. I did find it the lyrics a bit rushed to sing. I have been thinking of pruning a few words from some lines without changing the meaning and re-recording the vocals. Slowing it down is another option but I will try this first. I have already had a go at the horns and I think I have got a better sounding section happening. I will eventually re-post the song as Mark 2. In relation to the panning I will re-look at that in light of your comments. Thanks for having a listen! Regards, Peter.

Ai,
I love the kind of bossa, Latin rhythm that makes me wants to dance. That's some spritely singing and what an accomplishment that is. I see Eduard suggested that you slow it down but, you know, I didn't think you sounded rushed as much as you sounded excited and energetic. I think that fits with the lyrics very well. You are a pleasure to listen to. Thanks.

Balm for my ego..
Hi Char, you are doing my ego lots of good :-) Thanks! I did contemplate taking out a few redundant words and re-recording but like a lot of songs, after you listen to it a few times the version you have grows on you. I am happy enough with where it is sitting (although I have updated the midi horns to something that sounds a bit more realistic). Regards, Peter
