THINGS MUST CHANGE

Description
This has been around in many versions, but this one is different.

Recorded live in "The Shed" with an augmented PBGB: Ken Vatcher (drums), Brian Kille (sax), Chris Ralfs (bass), Gus Washbourne (guitar), Neil Porter (guitar/vocals).

Due to some difficulties with our gear, the vocals had to be re-recorded separately, which was disappointing as the live vocals (with Peter Reid on bgv) sounded better while we were doing it.

"Mixing and mastering" involved a little panning, adjusting relative volumes and a little verb and compression on the output track.

For me (Neil) it is really nice to hear this very different, but pretty cool version of this song.

Brian and Ken were new to the song, and I think this was our second run at it.

There'll be a high quality download available free via our blog http://thepbgbblog.blogspot.com/ later today.

Lyrics
You can probably all sing these anyway by now, but here you go:

Things Must Change
© Neil Porter 2007

You’ve got your hoodie up
The cone of silence down
Your buds are in your ears
Don’t want to turn around
Things have to change
Things just have to change

You’re staying out all night
I don’t know who you’re seeing
Get home and want a fight
You think I’ve got no feelings?
Things have to change
Things just have to change

This just can’t go on
Don’t know what’s gone wrong
But I want us to talk about it
You’ve got me seeing red
I don’t know what I said
But we’ve just got to talk about it
This just can’t go on
And I don’t know what I’ve done wrong
But I want us to talk about it
Talk about it

It’s not so long ago
We used to be best friends
There was no toe to toe
There were no rifts to mend
Things have to change
Things just have to change

Things can’t go on this way
You know what I’m saying
Another week like this
And I’m not staying
Things have to change
Things just have to change

This just can’t go on
Don’t know what’s gone wrong
But I want us to talk about it
You’ve got me seeing red
I don’t know what I said
But we’ve just got to talk about it
This just can’t go on
And I don’t know what I’ve done wrong
But I want us to talk about it
We’ve just got to talk about it

If things don’t pick up soon
I don’t know what I’ll do
You mean so much to me
I thought I meant the same to you
I just don’t understand
The way you make me feel
I can’t take it anymore
Things just have to change

Change up
That's what makes a pro drummer I think Mike - Ken was able to just change the feel at will - Brian's sax didn't hurt eithet! I'm hoping we can do a CD of this stuff - we seem to do much better with live recordings than studio style stuff - where I tend to take over the sound a bit :)
Thanks for the listen,
Neil

Hi Alf!
When are you coming down for a play? I guess the ice creams might take over again now that summer is nearly here.

This was such a buzz to play/sing on - having Brian and Ken on board made a huge difference. Chris on fretless has been terrific for me - he's so solid and reliable, so I can focus on what I'm doing.

Will try to catch up with you at Pambula.

Love to Jane.

I like this line "The cone of silence down"
Fretless bass sounds cool. Changing up the drums from halftime to a full time feel is effective. Sax solo is great. Vocals effectively bring out the mood of the piece.

Brian's sax was excellent - especially considering it was only his first or second run through the song. Same with Ken's drums!
Thanks for listening.

cool
i don't know what kind of music this is, but I like it. the horn is a great addition. almost like a jazzier version of the Police during the verse, then it turns into that cool driving horn-ey section. drums are really great. nicely done.

The horney section
that horn section sound is in fact Gus' guitar - we had some problems with his line out, and it ended up sounding like horns. The guys all thought I'd been fiddling with midi horns :) It wasn't a great day technically in the Shed, but nearly all the stuff ups improved the song.

change it has
boy Neil, this really takes on a whole new vibe. has a bit of a Boz Skaggs thing going on in the band arrangement & performance.

the fretless & sax added a nice feel

Chris is the perfect bass player for me. As a bass player myself, I need someone who can pick up on my original ideas and run with them while putting his own signature on them. He also has 4 different basses, from a very expensive acoustic standup through a black stick bass and his 2 Warwicks (one fretted and one fretless). I love Brian's sax on this!
Thanks for dropping in for a listen.

No midi ground :)
Hey Guys, it is great to hear the authentic sounds and chemistry of a good live performance - and this is top notch. Vocals, sax, drums, bass, guitars all really solid in the mix and sounding fantastic. And not a midi keyboard in sight. Thanks.

Peter -
if you're around the south coast on New Year's Eve, we're playing the Merimbula NYE celebrations. No midi indeed - although I'd love to have a good keys player on board.
Cheers,
Neil

INTO THE MYSTIC
YEAH.

Great Capture and the "punch-ins" on the Vx sound totally "There", no contrast with the Live Trx apparent at all.

I think this is a Way Good version of this piece, Neil. Congrats to you and The Boys all around.

Compliments,
rtc

More than anyone here, you probably know my story of trying to get the confidence together to play live and how much I've wanted to get some good players to play with here in the VDS (Very Deep South) of Oz. The band is going from strength to strength, 3 of us write and we occasionally get the chance to play with some really classy players. Life is pretty good really.
Thanks for your ongoing support my friend.
Glad you enjoyed this version by the band (PBGB+).
Cheers from NSW,
Neil

Really glad you enjoyed this version - it's nice to have some space in this. I always wanted to leave more holes in my songs, but always get tempted by the "just one more track" siren :)
Thanks for the kind words.

This is an amazingly well recorded live take, I love that Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Van Morrison vibe and feel, mad about that fretless bass, I think the vocals sound great but i would like to hear you step out on this song and really explore letting your voice kind of BB King out, I think this would be a great song for you to play with vocally just really let loose and go for it, not that I don't like how your singing, I just think you should let loose on this one! great song!

Fantastic comparisons - thanks (he said, a little red-faced). Stepping out for me is just getting in front of a mic and singing - I've done a few songs where I've let loose in my higher register, but unless the key is just right, my voice just tends to break up. I know what you mean though and 'll give it a try at rehearsals - a good idea.
Always glad to get suggestions.
Thanks for listening,

Glad you enjoyed it - getting live recordings to work has taken us over 12 months of fine tuning the hardware, the software and the musicians. Hopefully it will be relatively seamless from now on. This is probably my favourite song of mine, so it was special for me to get such a good result.

dichotomy
Kind of an interesting mix of a happy, jazzy, groovy musical number but with lyrics about tension, dislocation and friction with your kid. A mix of unease, but also this odd la-de-da feeling. Kind-of a weird dichotomy. Talented jammies though. Very tasty, well mixed too. Nice.
