Description
I've been reading the book featured in the cover art here for the past week or so. It is an excellently written biography for anybody interested in not just Lena Horne and her music, but about the sights and sounds of the early jazz years, the African-American culture of the time and their battles with racism and, well, just the story of America during her lifetime--the good and the bad. This was a song she made very popular in some movie--I cannot remember the title now--but it was written by the great Fats Waller in the late 1920s and it's always been a big favorite of mine--I hope you like it too!

Thanks again and take care now,

Michael

"Honeysuckle Rose" was written by Fats Waller in 1929.
Original arrangement and accompaniment provided by Alan McPike
Vocal by MJK
Special Featured Guest Voice: Gilbert Gottfried

This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1963, and its copyright was not renewed. It may not be in the public domain in countries that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works, such as Canada, China (not Macao or Taiwan), Germany, and Switzerland. Great stuff Michael. My dad is a huge Fats Waller fan and I grew up with it coming from all corners. I always liked Viper's Drag and Alligator Crawl but I'm pretty sure this is my dad's favourite. Loved it. The spoken parts are hilarious! Very MJK! Really enjoyed this.

Thanks for remembering the very GREAT Mr. Fats Waller! I grew up listening to his records over and over (seeking out all that I could find, which was not very easy in the late 1970s and early 1980s when I was a "kid"). There was never anyone like him, with that great pixie-ish sense of humor, combined with the brilliant talent he displayed at the piano. I loved many of the musicians I heard and still continue to listen to today on record, but when it comes down to it, I think Waller was my all-time favorite. Thanks so very much for the kind words! Take care now, Michael

Hi TF
You know, a lot of it is really much hard work (I'm not a natural singer really, it's something I need to put extra effort into) and of course, there's always somebody better (the kind that make you want to throw in the towel), but the main thing is to strive to improve, I guess that's all I can tell you (and I learn new things every week!) Thanks again and glad to hear from you, Michael

In fact, I sing sitting with a big ol' ribbon mic planted in front of me, and I try to be mindful of the placement and stuff, but I tend to weave around a lot when I'm getting into the thing sometimes--it's poor mic technique at it's very finest I feel! Happy you liked it--and take good care now! Michael

PS: I can't dance for the life of me. You see, I came of age around the tail end of the disco era and refused to wear a leisure suit!

Oh Impsie!
You should have seen those two babes wiggling around--it was disgusting really! It was educational however, in that I saw parts of the female anatomy that I only had a passing knowledge of, so it worked out okay I guess. Hey, you have to FedEx me one of them bagel deals you are always scarfing down Impsie (I've completely given up on getting a pizza outta you!) Oh, I'm halfway through the book now--up to the late 1950s so far. One of the best biographies of a musician I've read in a very long time (and it's 500 pages long so I'll be immersed in it for a while yet!) You are such a joy--take care now Impsie! Michael

PS
I just remembered: if they want originals here, I could always unfurl my legendary "Fried Egg on My Head" masterpiece! One listen and that would probably present grounds for continuing on with these old tunes (they'd probably even accept copyrighted standards once they hear that deal, let me tell you!)

Honeysuckle Rose
We do tend to take for granted the hard work required to sing at your level. People who don't sing (such as myself) sometimes assume that you and others who sound so natural were born with an ability, "God-given," as it were. We should know better. Anyway, another great performance and selection of music to cover. I think the answer to your implied movie query is contained in the artwork -- "Stormy Weather" -- yes, another internet genius at your service.

michaeljayklein said 2411 days ago (November 20th, 2010)
Hi Reggie
Okay, I think I got you this time--she sang it in one of MGM's "More stars than there is in heaven" production of "As Thousands Cheer" (and now I remember it because it had the most striking visual opening I've ever seen for a musical number: Benny Carter and his Septet, against a black velvet background with their instruments arranged in a semi circle, with the gold of their horns shining brilliantly--words alone cannot convey the effect, so if you can catch that, you will be dazzled). One reason I partly like singing the songs I've always known is because I have an awful time learning new things--so it kind of eliminates 25% of the work for me that way (and I'm terrifically lazy, by my own admission!) Glad you liked this old gem and happy to hear from you! Thanks again Reggie, Michael

My
Shampoo contains honeysuckle. It gives me a volume boost and re-energises my roots. It makes me smell fantastic too! Insects just love my hair.
And I just love this toon buddy, you sing it with class and control. That's a given though.
See ya!

Ted!
Man, you should use a little insect repellent for hair spray, just in case (it's okay, I've been known to wear pepper spray as an after shower splash--keeps bugs AND bus people away from me for hours!) You are much too kind--thanks again partner! I am off for FIVE glorious days next week so hopeful to make some real progress on the song (maybe even get it done if the constellation is in proper alignment for me!) You take care now and hope your weekend is going well--Michael

Lyn!
Yes! Have you seen that movie? I it was on TCM not terribly long ago--all I remember of it now was Lena's number (with that fabulous opening!) and Mickey Rooney doing an impression of Lionel Barrymore. It was MGM's entry into the all-star moral support movies for the armed forces (I'm sure you've seen them all too, like "Hollywood Canteen", "Thank Your Lucky Stars", "Stage Door Canteen" and "Star-Spangled Rhythm"--one each per major studio back then). You are one of the select few that makes me blush--I bet you didn't know that! Thanks again Lyn--hope you are doing well! Photobucket Mish

Now and then I get out and perform live (but not recently--last time was a week at the Fine Line Cafe in Minneapolis with a truly excellent quartet my voice teacher set me up with), but that was quite a while ago--I just don't have the need maybe, but it's fun when I do get a chance to work in front of a crowd--I love to see smiling faces down there!) You are much too generous--I don't think there will ever be another Sinatra, but if I sometimes remind you of him, even a little, that is very flattering indeed! As for that "smoothness"--I don't know how I do that because my actual speaking voice comes across as a combination of Rice Krispies, tinsel, the Mayor of Munchkin Land, the sound a Geiger counter makes and perhaps just a touch of Lauren Bacall after swallowing a shot glass. You take good care now and delighted to hear from you! Michael

I am very much enjoying the story of Lena Horne.
