Description
sonnyjim and I are back after a long respite with a new song. Somewhat space age bachelor pad, somewhat lounge, somewhat R&B, and a little bit recession soup kitchen spiritual. I started by creating the bones of the song, bass, synths, drums, scratches and then sonnyjim layered on the midi guitar, flute, marimba, and percussion. The vocals are all sonnyjim as well, and inspired vocals they are I have to say...It's a little longer, at 6:12, but it's an interesting journey. Always open to comments and suggestions...

Lyrics
Maybe World
© 2010 racerat & sonnyjim

Now I could bring myself to live in a world of yes
And I might even live in a world of no
One thing I can't do
I couldn't do it any better than you
Is live in your maybe world
Live in your maybe world
Is live in your lazy, hazy, crazy world

Hi Mark! Thanks for the listen. sonnyjim is the one to thank for this one. He really pulled out all the stops. His vocal on this one takes it to a whole new level. Not to mention the flute accompaniment....

bass
Thanks for dropping in Toveco. Just listened to your new upload "Wish You Are Close". What a beautiful song. So romantic.

The bass on this song is initially (for the first half of the song) a midi loop, but then I take it over with a real bass and mirror the loop and add flourishes and some bass-lead bits and pieces. It was fun to do and adds a bit of humanity to it we think. The bass change-over was sonnyjim's idea and a great one I think.

excellent track guys, very suave

suave
Thanks for the props Vic. I think "suave" kind of nails it. Suave with a hit of "quirky" maybe. Has a bit of Juan Garcia Esquivel in there I think with a little less zaniness. Esquivel being the best practitioner of space-age-bachelor-pad music that there is!

You guys have been carving out a really cool niche
so glad to have you back with a new tune. It's been too long between fixes. Toots Thieleman jams with Ennio Morricone in the Quiet Village. That's midi guitar? As in played on keys? Hard to imagine. Inspired vocals indeed. Massive bass by the way. This is the shizzle. Best thing I've heard in a while - anywhere.

midi guitar
The guitar track was done with Applied Acoustics Strum plugin. They're marketing it to keyboard players as kind of a backing strummy instrument, but I've found that it'll do some really amazing things when you tweak it. My method is sort of half musical typing, half manual moving around of the midi data with lots of modulation/expression/velocity experimentation. It can get time consuming at times, but I dig the zen of the whole thing! Glad you enjoyed it, and there's more to come......

Jazzy
This is kinda trip-hop-jazzy, and has a mellow little vibe. great to hear from you again, and nice to see your production stills get better with age. This could be the soundtrack to Mission impossible 4 if they go retro ..

Hey Steve! So look what the cat dragged in! Good to see you are still haunting the halls. Love the Mission Impossible suggestion, it certainly does have that kind of ring to it. Have a bit more time on my hands these days... maybe up for a echo/rat collab someday soon? Shake out the old cobwebs?

Just listened to your last one, "And Now It's Dark" mastery!

The Maybe Conflict
Chilled exotic groove, nicely textured with the marimba & percussion. Midi guitar? Is that using the guitar as a controller, or is the part programmed? Relaxing yet energizing at the same time. Nice!

This sounds really good
Great mix (thank you for that!), but those bass lines at the end really morph it into something beyond its lounge-y roots and give it emotional weight. That's not news to me, though; your bass playing is key to some our best stuff. I'm looking forward to wrapping those other tunes up (once I find the time....)!

sonnyjim has a great way of making me stretch out and try new things. he is the deranged mystery man incarnate I think, at least for me. As far as escaping from his grotto, I need to keep him in the grotto thank you though, cranking out collabs with me.

Welcome back :)
This is a very cool post - some major restraint about this. As I keep saying to Tobin, "I don't know much about jazz, but I like THIS!". This reminds me of some of my son-in-law's "lounge" CDs which I really enjoy.
Excellent stuff, and fascinating sounds.

This is outstanding, guys; genre-transcendant. The intro build is great, unique. If I made a mix tape -- oops, I'm old -- I mean a PLAYLIST that needed a seque between Triphop/Acid Jazz on one hand, and intelligent postpunk (say, early XTC), this would make for the perfect segue. It's got both intelligent smoothness and a bit of edge. I've been absent from MJ for a while due to a move (and more), and I SELDOM download anything but that rare 1 in 1,000 tunes I hear. This is one of them.

Guys
This is an spectacular mix of instruments and weird scales over that steady bass and piano trance riff. The part with the harmonica remind me of some fusion styles of tango and Lalo Schifrin, as mentioned. At 5:00, those vocals, is like going back to the 70s, with a 2K percussion. Cool lyrics. Lots of imagination.

Not long at all
I know that you're basically repeating one bass riff for 6 minutes, but it doesn't feel too long at all. All the different elements you guys layer on top of it keep it quite interesting.

High point: the guitar. Sounds wonderfully loose and inventive.

Low point: the flute. Way too obviously played on a keyboard. Those trills immediately give it away. Also, the sound is often too static. You'd think that samples, being a recorded real player, would sound better, but they don't seem to.

Hey Vic
Thanks so much for the critique. They are far too lacking on this site in general. People way too interested in blowing sunshine usually. I really appreciate the listen and your honesty. The guitar was SonnyJim using the StrumElec plugin for about 3/4 of the lead bits and loads of parameter tweaking, not any different than the flute in that it is a sample, but the flute just comes out so much less convincing.

Hey Vic,
Correction, SJ has informed me that Strum Elec is actually a physical modeling synth, like Sculpture. Which makes it even more amazing that it sounds so incredible!
