Description
This will probably be my last post of this year. Hope all my fellow Americans have a Happy Bird-day (Thanksgiving).

I’ll probably be resurfacing during the Cover Challenge in January. Maybe even two!

Before anyone critiques the drums used on this track, I must say, due to the fact that GB basically has no loops in 3/4 I have to create my own. This time I really made my own. Recently, I was at a music store buying a cheap guitar and a flute for my kids. I had the wherewithal to bring my Zoom, went over to the drum set there while my wife was talking to the clerk and pounded out a few drum line and crashes before I got asked to stop. I’m not a big drummer and I just wanted something basic. So, I went home, cleaned it up, looped it, maybe even changed the bpm? (Any easy ways to get 3/4 beats for future songs?)
*Thanks to Elliott Smith for the inspiration on this one*

So here it is. Enjoy!

Lyrics
Once or Twice

I once or twice, had a good day
No color just gray

All I want inside my head
Are the sweet things you’ve said

Slowly they’re going away
Slowly they’re going to zero

I once or twice, had a good day
But, they went away

Season change inside my heart
It tears me apart

I tried to try to bury my pain
I won’t try again

When will these thoughts go away?
I wish I could start from zero

I once or twice, had a good day
No color just gray

When will these thoughts go away?
I wish I could start from zero

Lava!
You get them drums anyway you can, the quality of your recording is amazing! The laid back mellow approach to this song fits perfect with the lyrics, you know I must tell you that I was working outside painting a garage door to look like wood and for some reason my ipod kept playing Lava music over and over and I enjoyed every minuteI hope the neighbors did also :) anyway this song is going into the Lava folder thanks!

LOL Tim...
my iPod does that every now and then. I seems to pick an MJ artist and in shuffle mode it nails most of their tunes... the funny thing is I have a few of my own in my iPod and its never played one of them... Guess its trying to tell me something!

"to look like wood"....
...sounds like a title to one of your tunes. Your iPod seems to be stuck on "Lava". Happens all the time. Please just contact your local Apple dealer.

The waltz of life?
Interesting use of waltz 3/4 time with quite "down" lyrics. It had my mind a bit confused - which was perhaps the point. Thanks. It sounded great and is one of those short songs that could sneak up on you.

Usually not like me, but I tend to write them with 3/4 in mind...go figure. Glad it snuck up on you.

ooh cool
I have to agree that the quality of this production is top-notch. I'm listening on crappy laptop speakers at work and it still sounds great! love love love the 3/4 time sig. I'm working on a song in 3/4 right now and it's such a totally different way of thinking. way to be creative on getting some drum loops and for what they are, they sound pretty good. I guess the easiest way to get future 3/4 drums is to send the track off to one of the excellent MJ drummers! Anyway, excellent tune to end the year with. Love your voice in this range. Happy Holidays!

My mind is wired to 4/4. 3/4 is too difficult for me to fathom.

Very cool song. The drums sound just right for the song.

I really dig the bridge section.

Nice one Dave
aren't music shops supposed to be places you can try stuff out? ;)
If you have a midi keyboard (or you can even use your computer keyboard I think) try making some loops up with a software drum kit. It's easy, and you have great sounds.
I enjoyed the relaxed beat and relaxed words - blackish though they may be. The quality of your production seems to be coming on recently this sounds really well produced.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I agree with Mark
about your "deeper" voice Dave. Very nice herein.

This is a nice song. I like the little change in melody at "When will these thoughts go away."

And the instrumental section sounds almost oriental.

I once or twice had a good day, rofl. That is good. I like this, very johnny cash! I actually really like this. One of your best IMO but then again I am a country bumpkin! Nice work. No critiques, I like the simple drums, they work for this. No wonder garageband has no 3/4 loops, that is such a rarely used time sig! (sarc)

3/4
I hate the 4/4 monopoly on GB loops. I'm also not willing to throw down 100 bucks or whatever it is for a jampack of loops just so I can get some. I love your DIY approach, though!

This song is very cool. I'm getting some Elliott, but I'm really getting a big Lennon vibe from this. Something from his '65 acoustic waltz introspection phase. Interesting chord choices. They give some good, strong intensity. Now that I'm on a break from school you don't post any new songs? COME ON! :)
