Description
A song I wrote and uploaded five years ago - my first on MacJams. There's no excuse for reposting it now, really, especially given the quality of the singing.

Lyrics
Mary was a till girl at the Woolworths store
Got pregnant by the man next door
He was married to her best friend Sue
Now Sue don't speak to her no more

The man who lived next door split up with Sue
Mary thought that she stood half a chance
The man who lived next door just laughed at her
Said, 'I'm not looking for romance.'

The river is deep
The river is wide
Let's all jump in the water tonight

Her friend Sue moved into a council flat
Mary walked down by the river side
She thought about the man who lived next door
She sat down on the bank and cried

The river is deep
The river is wide
Let's all jump in the water and die

Mary had a handsome boy and named him Sam
When Sam grew up he loved to drink and dance
Sam bet some money on a horse one day
He thought the horse stood half a chance

Chorus

Sam took the money and he bought a gun
Sometimes he found it hard to sleep
Sometimes a river's just a shallow stream
Sometime's a river's dark and deep

Chorus

Sue became a barmaid at the Rose and Crown
Mary is still working at the till
The man next door's next door to heaven now
Sam has a cell in Pentonville

The Man Next Door
I love this! Such a cool song. But it's the arrangement and production that gets me. I love the mandolin. There's a clarity and body to the mandolin that you don't often hear. You can hear the wood rather than just the strings. But what really gives this it's unique character is the early Beatle-ish plunky electric guitar on the left side.

there is ALWAYS an excuse to post something cool and this is very very definitely cool. I'm listening in phones and things are spatially cool. This needs to remain posted! Nicely done!

Yay!
Great to see a new .... albeit old .... post from you. This has such an innocence about the vocals and the style in general, and linked with the lyrics, makes for a great listen. Love the mando, the LHS guit and the whole thing really.
Fantastic stuff!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

.. I've been catching up on the jig oeuvre. You've been writing incredible songs. It's so exciting to hear them. I was listening to Amsterdam. Brilliant piece of writing.

Like this alot. Suggests Ronnie Lane's solo stuff in a silmilar folk/pop/busker/skiffle/country vein. Singing is great, btw.

The Man Next Door
The bouncy feel of this piece is a ironic contrast to the darker goings on of the lyric.
I like the vocal. Nice arrangement & production.

interesting and cool
mix of styles with the acoustic mando and effected guitar or whatever that is. lol...love the simple percussion accompaniment. great lyrics and vox. this is just contemporary folk at its best - honest and very real.

I Remeber
Hey William! Yes I remember this one quite well. Those were the days ehh? Macjams was bright and shiny as a new penny and we were . . . well, maybe not quite so bright. Nice well written song. Your arrangement skills were starting to develop from the very first.
