A Farewell

Description
This is a very simple little piano piece I wrote and played for a family memorial service a couple of years ago. I recorded it last week to add to a CD I'm making for the family for Christmas, and after tweaking some effects a bit in Logic, decided to also post it here. Now you know my previously well-kept secret: It is SOMETIMES possible for me to play slower than 150 bpm. Please don’t tell anybody. Thank you to shay (kassia), andrew (alackbass), and bryn (particledots) for the thoughtful listens and feedback.

you make me cry!
Ok... everything makes me cry but your music always evokes such emotion in me and I love it. So calming and reflective, right what I need. I heard this over iChat while online with Chris and he couldnt help himself but to pick up his guitar and play along with you and what a wonderful treat that was!!! Thank you so much for all that you give to this world!!! you know this is burning a path to my iPod at 150 bmp so no worries if you slowed it down for one!!!

Well I didn't get to listen
until just now... you know the reasons... but here I am at last!!! As usually very very emotive piano! I think the piano and you were born together Karen... (no that is not an age crack!!!) But then maybe you are reincarnated... a previous piano master come back to life!

Outstanding!

What....no assist ?
You done this without the Mirror Slaves and Poison Ivory and the band in the garage ?...and you did itso quickly......perhaps you should lose the evil henchmen, stop trying for global domination and take up playing the piano....oh you do !

I may have some things muddled in my mind......

Great piece by the way !

Mmm...
Yes, someone just stepped beyond that hill. The credits are rolling with the clouds. It's a fond farewell—nothing too heartbreaking. Your Magnatone flair wells up for a moment, but sinks respectfully. This song is a cohesive unit. It doesn't need a sweeping story arc, like most of your ballads, to do its job.

Pacing
So ... sometimes lightning strikes twice in the same month?

The simple, deliberate pace is certainly a departure from your usual frenetic and voluminous produtions, but a change in magnitude doesn't detract in the slightest from your sure hands at the keyboard. This is nice.

Lovely piece, Karen
I very much like the way that 'activity' at the beginning resolves into something resembling stasis at the end. Your chords are full and touching (and kind and positive), and on my third listen I find myself thinking about the nature of chords on piano: so many possible colors. Your choices are so clean, and the execution is very fine.

Much Love,

What? No click track?!!!
Karen,
This is such a lovely composition on so many levels. It is a prayer, a hymn, a wonderfully-constructed classical piano prelude. It is such a sweet tune and with those nice octave skips in the melody around 2:20 it just seems about perfect in every way. And I am absolutely delighted that you took your time, threw away the metronome, and just played from your heart. What a gorgeous recording of a perfect little gem. And what a wonderful surprise to hear this this morning.

Hi Paul
thanks so much for coming by! you know, if i could figure out HOW to add a couple dozen tracks of orchestral instruments sans a grid, i would do it! i know it's what YOU do, and i am in awe of that ability. with the ability to manipulate the bpms in logic, i can see how one might add back IN the metronome-less sound after the fact. other than that, i'm quite stumped about how to get everyone to play together without a conductor, as it were. thanks for your continued support and encouragement - it means so much to me!

Simple gifts
"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler" (to quote Einstein), and this is musical proof of that. Very pretty. I hear a nod to Beethoven's Pathetique sonata (the slow intro) when you move to minor at 1:17 to about 1:30. I like your expressive playing, especially the elasticity of tempo (echoing what Paul Page said).

magnatone said 2488 days ago (December 1st, 2010)
My Dear Clark
well, i did used to play the Pathetique (well, 1st and 2nd movements only), as well as a lot of other Beetoven, so i'm sure his influence is in there somewhere. what an incredible compliment! it's very nice to play the piano without a click track. i just wouldn't have a clue how to orchestrate from there, lacking the grid (see comment to Paul above), which is why i keep defaulting to that when i'm orchestrating. my skills are limited! glad you liked this, and thank you!

more to say
As I cyber wandered away from this post... i mused over a thread a read awhile back about how well you do in terms of fans and listens, comments and what not... I didn't read it too carefully.... granted, you do invest alot in others here at MJ.... but that's not nessicarily enough to invoke this sort of success... I would say " just listen to her".... the same heart and spirit that invests so much in others is also on display in your music... there is no trickery to it... and it's not the result of some grand strategy... you're just a noteable artist.... every time that I see that you've posted... I'm compelled to come hear...

Farewell to thee! but not farewell
To all my fondest thoughts of thee:
Within my heart they still shall dwell;
And they shall cheer and comfort me.
O, beautiful, and full of grace!
If thou hadst never met mine eye,
I had not dreamed a living face
Could fancied charms so far outvie.

First thing I did when I heard this was to pull my flute out, (yes my flute) and play along on top of your beautiful, sensitive feeling provoker.

There are so many places that you give space for a soloist to soar. Much like your other pieces, you always manage to give us a lift. If there is one common theme to all of them, is that they are positively uplifting....you are a hope giver.

Stately Beautiful
In some country houses open to the paying public in the UK, the inevitable piano is available in one of the sumptuous rooms for anyone with an urge to tinkle away as it were to spontaneously express themselves. i have often wished i had the skill to do just that, but i don't know one end of a keyboard from another.

i can only imagine what a beautiful piece like this would do in that sort of situation. The fret and fever of the world, the phoney respectability, the pretentious quiet, would all disappear in a rush of authentic loveliness and blissful poise.

It would be such a privilege to do that, and make the day memorable for all who heard it.

i am glad that i can step into that room and hear you play anytime i want to!

This beautiful music fits so amazingly to the scenery I could see outside from my window here in an old czech town late night all covered with fresh snow. It has been snowing for last few days and all the town looks like from fairy tale ... your music is like a gift that makes this whole moment more precious ... thank you, so beautiful! Finally!
All errands done, and I get to put the good headphones on my head and relax into a good listen...

Knowing that your classically adept, I like the "folk piano" phrasing on this, Karen; it sounds like it wants to be a folk song or a shape note hymn. I can well imagine it being perfect for a memorial service, and I can also easily imagine it with words, which I always like. In fact, I can imagine the female lead voice and the occasional tasteful choral builds as the chord progression gets just the teeniest bit anthemic...

It is quite beautiful, and it's not glorpy or icky-sweet... Nicely spare and right...
magnatone said 2483 days ago (December 7th, 2010)
hi ed
well, i was possibly somewhat classically adept at around age 12, but it's all a distant memory now. it seems like many people easily hear words to this little tune - i suppose they would fit in nicely. i'm such an instrumentalist, i just never think of stuff like that. glad you got your leaves raked!

Hi Karen......
I already had this piece of yours downloaded. I often hear pieces in the early morning (at work) and then forget to comment when I come home. Ooops.

Your composition is strong and a very fitting tribute to whomever it was for. The music is phrased for words almost and I just love this sort of piano piece, especially when played in this heartfelt way.

I'm sorry that I gave the impression that I'd missed it. I really don't miss much but tend to hang around on the periphery of the site these days.

Take care and happy holiday's.

I am humbled to think someone as gifted as you has ever had to sit through my amateurish works, but it just shows you have generosity of spirit and a kind heart, which are both qualities that make your music especially brilliant, which it is. I am moved by this... it's a language you've mastered and I am your eager interpreter!

Hi Karen, I wonder sometimes if you get embarrassed by all the accolades you receive on MJ, but they are just so richly deserved! You are just an extraordinary talent. I like your less-than-150 playing very much! I'm sure this must have been just beautiful at the Memorial. This piece is exquisitely sad and nostalgic--kind of recalls Debussy. Well done.

Somber, yet airy
The dichotomy of death put to music... the sadness of friends and family left behind in contrast with the majestic journey that lies ahead somehow manages to surface in this lovely piece, Karen.

Still, then, a form of *traveling* music. ;)

a farewell
elements of brahms immediately spring to mind...as does the expectation of hearing kathleen ferrier bursting into song.

in fact i'm surprised nobody has put any lyrics to one of your pieces....this one definitely lends itself to the idea. beautiful.

Karen,
Reading sheila's comment brought it home to me. There is so much beauty in your playing and it comes from your yearning and reaching. Oh Karen, thank you for being who you are. Your music could not be what it is without you (that might sound silly, but you know what I mean).

again..
you're playing and composition is overwhelming. I absolutely love this style of playing, so this is extra special to me. I seem to hear a strong relationship between your work and that of some Schumann pieces. Obviously with your own twist.
i'm on a magnatone download spree!

thanks

Wow Karen...
How did you squeeze so much emotion into so few notes. I love music, but it is extremely rare that it touches me like this. Thank you.
