Description
Delicious Tension is a collaboration between me and sonnyjim. It started as a simple piano piece with some soft jazzy drums and then over time morphed into somewhat of an intensely complicated ethereal cinematic soundscape. It includes piano, drums, distorted guitars, bass, a time-stretched and heavily effected vocal, talky soundbites taken from a Japanese soap opera and singing from a traditional Japanese folk song. The synths are Kore Player, Crystal and Strum Elec. We also used Ultrabeat and Addictive Drums for the drum tracks, as well as several instances of the EXS24 for the piano, tampani and extra basses. Mixing a thing like this is simultaneously an exercise in exuberance and restraint. There are just too many possibilities of where it can go, so eventually you just have to commit. This is where it landed. Headphones recommended.

welcome back, champ!
good to see you up and posting, man. gotta start by complementing you on the song artwork - that looks great. what a whacked-out trip this is; did you record or sample the shamisen in there? at work, so headphones from 3:20 was essential, you dirty bugger. good fun, track

ummmm
SJ played the shamisen I think, can't be sure, it's all a blur. Have to let SJ weigh in to confirm. SJ is also responsible for the artwork choice - and I think it's really perfect - and I juiced up the font on his name and color just a bit, but it was all SJ.

Can't speak Japanese, so I can't be sure what the lyrics are saying, but the breathing gets the point across, yes?

I was thinking of you as I posted this, wondering what you would think, this is kind-of in a distant way reminds me of your idioms series in it's cinematic meanderings.

Thanks for listening Dan!

Hi Dan
No shamisen on this. There's an effected vocal that wafts in and out of the general sonic stew, though. I think that's what you're hearing. I went back to see how I did that vocal, but I think I must've trashed that project after I did it. If I remember correctly it was reversed, stretched and run through a spectral plugin. Probably some pitch correction, too. I think. Alright, I don't really remember what I did, but it sounds like a shamisen now!
Cheers,

SJ

Love this
So different and interesting. I love the way that the piano is up front. I was hoping the synths wouldn't take over and they didn't. Very enjoyable.

The atmosphere built over time. As I said in the description, it started out very simply and then got very very complex. It then was the arduous task of carving down, honing in and getting rid of stuff, which is much harder than adding stuff let me tell you. SJ is a great partner in all this, always adding in the most crazy interesting experimental stuff!

Delicious Tension
aptly named, although Tripped out Gershwin is a close second. I never know what to expect when I click on the RR/SJ collabs, but they never disappoint. Almost some middle eastern flavors with the stretched out vocal. I can see where this one might have taken the extra time to layer in. Very visual. Enjoyed that guitar work.

axes
The funny thing is that the guitars, both the bass and the tremolo guitars came in at the very end, which is not usually the case, but they gave the tune some "glue" and cohesion, which it had started to lose as the layers built and it got more complex. Thanks for your critique, always appreciated.

Delicious Tension
Yup, I can feel the tension, we're sort of kept on the edge - that piano phrase seems to be asking a question. The layered synths keep things mysterious. Cool stuff!

Nectar
Dave thanks for the listen. I really enjoyed your last one American Dream, a really strong song. I'll have to check out that plug-in Nectar that you mentioned, it sounds very cool for vocals. As you said, the best thing about being out of work is the ability to have a little more time to focus on music, and that bit it already showing. Cheers.

Far removed, but nice
Hi RR/SJ. One of the great things about joining MJ is that I am listening to music that is far removed from what I have habitually listened to. Headphones on and enjoying this a lot. Hints of the Doors "The End" wafted in and out. The piece does build and hold tension and is aptly named. Thanks a lot. Regards, Peter

Delicious
This is really an interesting piece of music, I love to listen to stuff like this, the way sounds drift in and out, strange voices etc. There is definatly a strange tension evoked, and yet a feeling of curiosity as well. Really cool project Phil! I don't know how I missed it, I usually check in to see what you are up to, seeing as you were the first artist I listened to on MJ.

Thanks for sharing

Yep. Headphones.
With absolutely no disrespect or slighting of you two gentlemen, this is the sort of effort I have come to associate around MacJams with bud...

There's this very neat sort of ethereal smoothness, an almost New Age ambience with touches of Fripp and Eno, all run through the gritifier so that it ends up with a gentle burr of distortion.... The "almost natural" piano parts nicely anchor the tune in its simple beginning, and then you manage to fill it up without crowding it...

Sonic Journey
It's amazing how textured and nuanced a song can be that is essentially structured around two notes. This piece holds interest all during its sonic journey through time and space.

That opening piano hook keeps lurking in the background ... and I keep waiting for it to re-emerge from the shadows and sell me some more of that "Gershwin" candy. That doesn't happen - which leaves me a little disappointed, as it deflates my expectations. However, it totally reinforces the theme of tension throughout the length of the song. I recognize this compositional situation. How elliptical should a song be? Sometimes a melody practically demands a return appearance; other times the push is to keep progressing away from the starting point.

As for the name, as cute as "Trippy Gershwin" might be, I think "Delicious Tension" is better. The piano hook is a tease that pulls you into the zone, but the piece isn't really about the piano theme and variation. It's way bigger than that ... and "Delicious Tension" aptly describes the sonic world of the piece.

Indeed, the piece is so chock full of sounds, textures and voices that there are places where it's difficult to tell where one sound has started and another has stopped, so sweet is the blending. One particular moment I found special was when the shrieking Japanese woman inadvertantly duets with the shrill guitar - although maybe that actually was a planned moment?
