The Ocean w/Loob and Awigze

Description
I'd like to begin by saying that I hate writing song descriptions on collabs because I'm always afraid I'm going to forget to say something or offend someone...so please bear with me. I have been throwing up all day, but I didn't want to wait one more minute to post this!

I originally posted this asking for assistance and opinions on October 28th. Almost immediately I was contacted by Fred (Loob) with a strings addition (exactly what I was looking for) and things just evolved from there. Andy (Awigze) sent me a sax part (which, although it was effing BRILLIANT, only took him, like, a day) which I spent copious amounts of time cutting, pasting, and loving and at that point I was invited to post my "session" on Freddy's website (fjams). On FJAMS I met Eddie Wilson, who contributed guitar and lots of moral support. Fred tolerated my daily nitpicking of his drum selection until he got it just right, and then I was ecstatic. I can be a bit of a perfectionist, green though I may be. Fred also mastered this.

All of this evolved from a poem written by a dear friend of mine, Peter Holbrook. I put it to music about a year ago and decided that it needed more. This is the result.

Lyrics
On the outskirts of the ocean
on a summer's night
we lay blankets in the sand
bathed in lush moonlight
held you like a driftwood doll
tenderly but tight
it was there I told my stories
some I barely knew
you were in them one and all
they were meant for you
what is real is fantasy
fiction always true

you swam naked in the ocean
ballet of the tide
water glistened down your skin
foaming from your glide
floated like a whiskey jar
with a note inside

I went wading out to join you
one more tale to tell
saw you dancing with the tide
rising with each swell
you were reaching out to me
just as morning fell
then the distance of the shoreline
and the rolling sky
claimed the yearning in my heart
years I wondered why
neither of us sank away
though we said goodbye

(ok .... effing incredible!) freddie's work shines, and natalie i don't think there are many non-perfectionists here when it comes to their music! great job everybody, haunting, thoughtful, intense in the best possible way. congrats to all!

cresting successive swells...
Each time you touch this, it gets better and better, Natalie. And although part of it is that you're getting some other excellent musicians around you (love the bass, guitar, strings, and sax work), it is important to recognize that you wrote a really beautiful song here, and sing it with passion and feeling.

Kudos to everyone on a well crafted piece of music.

Drakonis

Very nice song
And well performed. I do feel you might need to project your voice a bit more in your recordings Natalie--sometimes, as here, it fades out or is a bit overpowered by the accompaniment, but you have a very nice voice and your phrasing is excellent. Great job by the guys too!

Great adaption of the poem!
I know Peter liked this. I thought your sort of whispered bluesy vocals fit the feel of his poetry very well! It's good when an idea comes together. Good teamwork! Really loved the combination of her vox, Andy's Sax, and Ed's guitar! A pleasure!

A red-letter MJ day
Hi Natalie. First of all, this is a really beautiful song. Your smoky vocals coming at me from both sides were perfect. Andy's sax just soars and counterpoints your vocals beautifully. Strings, guitar, bass and drums all just right as well. Congratulations to you all. The quality of the songs posted on MJ today is outstanding. Best regards, Peter.

The Ocean
Again with those sultry vocals - awesome! This song is great - all players performed beautifully, and the overall production is excellent. If you don't mind me saying so, the fade at the end should, well, fade away - it seems a bit awkward, almost like the song isn't ready to be over. Then you hear the song end anyway. Just MHO, and aside from that I really love this!

Great job - thanks to all for a great collab!

Oceans Singing
The addition of the pulsing strings really make this song stand out--that particular touch is very unique. The vocals are incredibly beautiful in their subtlety--this is the exact type of singing one would expect to hear when visualizing the ocean. The sax is AMAZING!!!! Love it, love it, love it. Congratulations to all--this is mighty fine work.

Hey Guys
Thanks for all the kind words. I forgot to mention (knew I would forget something!) that Freddy played bass on this as well. Apologies!

My favorite part of the whole song is the sax...I spent many hours caressing the saxophone track, lol.
Loob said 2415 days ago (December 11th, 2010)
No Ed played the bass.
I did the drums, strings, organ, and congas...

Ocean
Felt there was something of the sea in this, a bright, sparkling quality, the smooth rush and hiss of a reaching, encircling wave on a wide, sunny shore. Intimate, uplifting, very well put together.

Just what is required in a winter city. (Visiting Mother, back in the countryside soon!)

Enjoyed it. Thank you. All the more remarkable because it was a collaboration.

Natalie
I knew a lot about you in just the first four measures of the song that I was about to add sax to. There is something special about you that is expressed through your vocals that defies explanation. And yet these things are recognizable - no, sensed somehow deep and intrinsic, subjective and many other similar words that I could use but won't. I respect how you coerced the track to fit that something that you were trying to say. As a sax player and feeling the bamboo vibrating and connecting to your song I believe that there are great things to explore here in melding our two sounds together. Everything about this song, the bass, guitar, drums, production quality are superb. Each piece leans into a greater picture and I look forward to more in the future. Thank you for letting me stand awhile on the outskirts of the ocean. This also marks another cool event for me. My first collab with Loob and it is also cool to have worked with Ed. Tell Peter, thanks for the wings.

I could listen to this all day Natalie. I've been lucky enough to work with Freddy before and guys from F-Jams and he's a legend. What can I say? And one hell of a nice guy too. So when you guys working together again, huh?

great vocals
your voice. beautiful. your nitpicking paid off. no offence to all the musicians, but i'd love to hear the vocals with only acoustic guitar. I'm guessing there's more versions from what I've read in comments? i'm in love with your voice in this song.

Great track -
I really like the insistent guitar strum beat or whatever it is that pulses behind there. Gives it almost a tango flavor somehow Excellent work all around - loob and andy shine - and your vocals are fantastic.

The Ocean
Listened to the original now this new version. Having listened back to back this version has taken on a much more romantic sweet adult contemporary vibe while the original sketch was much darker and moody and enveloping. The production has obviously come a very long way and is much improved. The doubled vox throughout the entire song is a little distracting and might be better utilized in more limited way? Maybe just on the choruses? Beautiful adds by your collab partners. Totally pro sounding.
