Description
Written when I moved to Cumbria - I never cycled up the Wrynose pass yet but my dad must have been a fit bugger judging by the photos Ive seen of it.I wrote it as 'Rhinoes pass' cos he'd talked about it alot, and i just heard the word rhino.Maybe some day I'll cycle up it.Anyhow these lanes round here are full of ice and snow and time and pubs,so thats what its about.

The picture I painted in watercolour and attempted to sell on ebay for exactly one million pounds...just an idea I had at the time....no buyers, but plenty of interest lol.Think its still in the cellar in Lancashire..

Lyrics
Jack Frost

Jack Frost went leaping
In forests sleeping
Weaved circles around my song
One Winters night
By firefly lanterns
We crossed the mountains
And came into a tavern
On the Wrynose* Pass

How high the moon am I
Spring will awaken by and by
Green grow the rushes-O
When the valleys sing below
How high the moon am I
Spring will awaken by and by
Green grow the rushes-O
When the valleys sing below

Father Time came weary
And lay upon the snow
And in his eyes there flickered flames
Of a 1000 empires slain
He says your learning
He sees you turning
He rolls you down through history
And back again

How high the moon am I
Spring will awaken by and by
Green grow the rushes-O
When the valleys sing below
How high the moon am I
Spring will awaken by and by
Green grow the rushes-O
When the valleys sing below

* sang as 'Rhino's' pass as this is what I heard my father saying he'd cycled up many times,i didnt know it was spelt wrynose.

Hey Richard, another happy jangling country jig of a tune to brighten up the cold season and lift another pint to. Well done. Great harmonies.

I guess it would help if I signed in before trying to comment.I just came home from a gig,and am drinking this cider which tastes of penicillin.Hope I don't die tonight lol.Had to get a taxi as i slipped earlier on,managed to stay upright but pulled a shoulder muscle during my attempt to stay upright.good gig though except didnt get paid cash in hand.If I ever have kids in the next life,I would advise being a plumber.Very much appreciated - thank you X

Just wait....
After you're rich and famous for your songwriting, especially your explorations of Cumbrian mountain passes, they'll be WISHING they'd bid a million dollars for that picture...

I really like this sort of thing, Rich. I like the rhythm, the sort of Anglo-pagan vibe of the lyrics, the guitar and mandolin sound, and I think your vocal on this is really right....

Excellent production Rich
Clean vocals, pure harmonies and great lyrics says it all. The music bed has a kind or reel feel to it that works well with the rest of the song. I really like what you done here Rich. Thanks for the D/L my friend it's a great song.

Has that traditional sound
and the description conjures a cyclist gingerly descending Wrynose and being passed by a rhino sliding on the ice, then telling the tale in the pub at the bottom of the hill. Or perhaps not.

Gasping Car
i remember my car nearly conking out trying to get over Hardknott and Wrynose years ago; cycling it would definitely take a fit bugger to accomplish!

Loved the instrumentation, the harmonies, and the tempo, particularly in the instrumental sections. Vocal style good, too.

My only regret with this song is that the lyrics might be more Cumbrian and local? They seem a tad sort of generic and standard. To mention Wrysnose specifically is great, but it is rather on its own? There is a Roman Fort high in the pass, which might give a unique historical backdrop? Or something?

For me, making a song local and special to that region adds a lot of interest.

Just a thought. Still a brilliant song.

I do not know anything about Wrynose and the time and pubs around there ... but it all fits nicely with the song, the way you describe it, the beatiful painting and the "cool" times we are having. Anyway it seems like youre having great fun even though nobody bought your painting yet. Keep it like that, thnx!
