Description
Ha! I might be going insane. I'm in the final stages of getting my CD ready for release and I'm really really really sick of listening to those songs. So I took a play break tonight and had a little de-stressor with the hang drum for an hour. Seriously, don't take this too seriously.

I should mention that the hang drum is a virtual instrument in the East/West Stormdrum pack. I love it.

For some reason, the hang drum thing makes me feel a bit like a hack, because if I were ever in the same room as a REAL hang drum I'd have no friggin clue what to do with it, but I'm certainly having a blast with the virtual one. Thanks for encouraging me in these creative play breaks.

Messin' about with a hang drum for an hour
can, in the right hands, provide absolute enchantment for thousands of non-dancing monks. Well, hundreds at least and they might be dancing non-monks but, whatever, thank you for sacrificing that hour. This is sweet.

Parichayaka said 2535 days ago (December 13th, 2010)
wonderful!
At first I took your description to 'seriously' not take this song seriously, too seriously. duh.

Then I felt that sometimes the difference between a 'serious' piece and a joyful improvisation can be as little as the fact that it took less time to create and may nothing to do with the quality. Once an artist reaches a certain level of expressing oneself, I suppose. Which is clearly the case with your 'incidental' posts.

Love this piece, lively, vibrant with a childlike innocence? Great sense of rhythm and if Tibetan monks really dance, I could imagine it would be to this kind of music!

oh
come on don't get all serious on me. making music for the pure joy of it - you really can't beat it. it may not be the most polished piece, but it's certainly full of heart. i have no idea if Tibetan monks really dance, but I think if they do I'd love to join them. Thanks for listening Pari!

thanks for your great comment! I really am in love with Stormdrum for various reasons, and the hang drum sample is the best I've heard. I highly recommend it - and if you keep an eye on EastWest's website (SoundsOnline I think) they have some pretty great sales. I actually got Stormdrum for free when I purchased the EastWest orchestra. Anyway, thanks for coming by for a listen!

Dancing Monks
If I were a monk I would probably say, "It's got a great beat and I can really dance to it! I'll give it a 9.5"

Seriously, this is interesting to listen to and I've no doubt it is fun to play, so good for you on this.

Now, what's this about a cd coming out?
Take care, amiga -

Hey, if you check out my song "Into The Tunnel" I posted some information about Hang Drums. VERY cool instruments that I've fallen in love with. Alas, I'll never be able to afford a real one, so I must make do with my samples. On the other hand, I doubt I could actually play a real one, so....this works for me! You need
to break the mold a little more often, I think! This is really great stuff!
I'm guessing that the sounds on this have a lot to do with the velocity of each note. If that's a correct guess, then you've done (as Eduard might say) a 'bang up job'. Lots of convincing timbres here. Beautiful sounds. Beautifully put together. Is there room for this on the CD?

Finally
I'm just now getting to hear this one, despite hearing all of its other incarnations ... namely, the derivatives by davajonah, michael2 and apod. Interesting to hear it here, stripped down and bare, despite it already being complex and layered.

You know I'm a fan of Imogen Heap, and she is a fan of the Hang drum. The virtual instrument you have does a great job approximating the sound of a Hang, complete with all of its intricacies. The song is hypnotic and evokes a Far East reverie.

I also like your choice of simple percussion, though I did have a nit to pick. It's the same bit of advice I give to all of my MIDI drummer friends. In some spots (like at 0:24) you play consecutive 16th notes on the same drum at the same (or very nearly the same) velocity. I kinda think even the best drummer could not achieve such mathematical precision on consecutive hits. I recognize it may have been intended for this style, but even if you wanted to emulate that perfection, I would still suggest randomizing the velos to enhance the realism. If you have five hits in a row at 108, change it so that the run is 108-107-109-108-109. It's funny how a subtle change like that can make an impact to the listener, if only subconsciously.

Thank you for sharing!
