Description
The good ol' days. When someone would play on pots and pans and you'd sing in to a toy echo microphone taped to a regular microphone. Just like the masters used to do it. I think this is from 2000. Tascam 4-Track with (probably) my friend, Jon, on pots and pans.

First and foremost!
Totally digging this retromatic groove machine. Who needs computers and samples when you got the kitchen sink. Great track. Has a nice Jonah Lewie quality. Remember him?

Retromatic Necromantic
Jonah Lewie. Interestingly, I've never heard any of his music. All I know about him is that he was on Stiff back in the late 70's/early 80's.

the white keys
so you had to choose - gas money for the weekend or rent a tascam and stay in the garage. nothing reduced DUI stats like the 4 track recorder. fun tune, sweet little solo.

Gas money
Funny you should mention it. Back when we were doing this stuff, I was picking up spare change for gas money. I know the shame of saying "0.36 cents on pump 7, please". Buying two cups of gas at a time. The rock and roll dream.

Classic in every sense of the word, plus a whole lot of fun! I wanna be the guy who blows on the jug! Excellent!

We need a good jug man. The last one couldn't keep up. Can you handle the tune?

perfect
this is all about the vibe. I think we had the same recording set-up. love the knod to "she's a woman." i think if we lived in the same town we would be friends and my wife would be concerned that we were spending too much time together.

Next time
Me and the fam are in LA I'll pack up the Tascam and the cookware and we'll have to do some Iron Maiden covers with the gangbangers. I'd love to meet up one day. I need to hook up with Bryn soon since he does actually work like 20 minutes from where I work. Then next time I'm in NYC I can meet Bud and I'll have traveled coast to coast for APOD, Grateful Dead style.

you're going to have to extinguish the incense before you come in the house though; the cat is allergic.

Drums
Any 22 month old will tell you that a drum set is unnecessary.

Tascam
My weapon of choice for 15 years was a Yamaha 4Track MT1X. I loved the limitations they gave us. The need to be inventive (remember ping-ponging!) the need to be direct (6 tracks max with a ping-pong). With the limitless track counts, plug-ins, pitch correction I wonder sometimes if things are really better, or just more complex. Fun track. takes me back.

Tascam
My thoughts exactly with the limitations. Sometimes I listen back and think the tracks sound better. Mine was so basic that you really could punch in so each track had to be performed just how you liked it (good, bad or in-between). No polishing. Which made for fun, loose tracks.

That's the best place for it. Like a Thanksgiving place-setting. A conversation piece.
