Partial Particles (w/ Diviner and Particle Dots)

Description
About a month ago, Bryn (Particle Dots) had posted an open collab for the Producers Challenge. Diviner grabbed the files and did a remix of it that was very cool. Not knowing how to keep my nose out of other peoples business, I got Diviners files and then added more to it. Originally I had planned on doing a remix of it, but wound up writing a song around it. It is very 80's and kind of a pop dub track. I keep picturing Ari Up getting her hands on a computer and trying to write a Beatles type of song. This is what she ended up with.

I did a cut up glitchy version of the drums, and it's mixed in pretty low but you can hear some fast sounding snare fills periodically. all of the background dub noises were made from the girl back up vocals that I ran through a dub delay (Ratshack Reverb) and played with the sliders. The rest of it was made with a cheap sampler I have that lets you put the beginning and end points really close together so that any sample you put in it will bounce around in strange ways. i used the Logic synths and a new synth called Curve that I got to beta test (if you are into synths, google it).

I may do another mix of this without my vocals, for some reason I was liking that as I mixed. here is the link to Diviners original version (which I like a lot more than mine):

Lyrics
if the sun
goes black
if it melts into the sky
and if i go blind
from staring aimlessly
i'll sing a song

bom bom bom be adaal...

if i fall in
while i'm gazing at the sea
and if i should drown
when i slip beneath the waves
i'll sing a song

bom bom bom be adaal...

Bom-Bom
The downward scale repetition is SUPER cool in one of the background synths (I think?). The Bom-Boms starting at 1:40 give this almost, strangely, a South African feel . . . . yep, I don't know why, but I'm getting a very distinct tribal, African feel on this piece. This is simply amazing! Wonderful work by everyone involved!

ha
i thought it sounded South African too. Was about to discard it, but figured what the hell? the downward scale is 4 different synths playing the same part and coming in and out of the mix. thanks so much for checking this one out. much appreciated.

Partial Particles
Kind of a curious combination of warm and inviting and cold and glitchy. Not really sure who is winning. One way or the other I like the lyrics and warm bass and the backing vox. Very cool.

you know
i'm not sure either. last night I had the stomach flu and couldn't lie down or I'd throw up; so I sat up at the kitchen table and mixed this with head phones. now listening to it, all I can hear is that snare whacking away the entire song. how did I not notice that? i may have to redo the drum arrangement. thanks for listening.

Your vocals are always spot-on
...and they work so well with the backing instrumental.
Love the upbeat feel of this tune...like a warm summer day in the middle of winter.

Nice work-up of B's original tune/Diviner's remix. Very impressed! :)

glad you like, although I can't really take credit for the beat (that would be Keith). I had fun doing this one, glad you liked.

Michael
First of all - great use of Keith's elements. I love the idea of a piece of music evolving from one version to the next - compare this to what my original elements were...amazing and fantastic stuff.

Secondly - I think you are being a bit too hard on yourself in some ways. This is a great little pop song. I dont actually think of Paul Simon myself - more like OMD imagining a mythical world music that never existed. Again, fantastic and amazing stuff

Finally - you are achieving such clarity and definition with your mixes these days - I am going to start knocking on your door and peering over your shoulder to learn from you.

Thanks for doing this and working with the original elements.

Fabulous stuff

well you know
how it is. you do something, and then on listening back (from a casual non-mixing point of view), 267 things always jump out at you. and you wonder how it's possible you didn't notice them before.

thanks for the kind words on the production end. have really been trying hard. seems like the simplest things make for better sound: EQing everything, muting the vocals in between phrases... glad it's noticed, thanks Bryn.

Brilliant!
I love it. I only just listened to the tracks that I sent you and realised that I forgot to switch off the beats on the synth loops. I'll send you those again. However I think you have done exceptionally well considering my mistake, for which I apologise. Once again, Loved it!

glad you liked. this was a lot of fun for me. i was kind of tripping out on there being 4 tracks of the same beat, but figured it was part of something you did on your end. if you want to resend me those tracks that would be great, I can work up another version. really happy you approve of what I did with it.

love that bom bom chorus. what a great choice. without that it would have been good, but slick and cold. with it you get this burst of messy blood and guts in the middle of the chrome.

Michael
well you have a great ear for a stellar track to run with, and imho you have taken a really good mix and made it better, and have written a tremendous melody/hook, as good as a hook can get! My hat off to you sir, you have a voice that is so enjoyable to listen to and the stuff you do to create these sounds and mixes technically is amazing, extraordinary talent! Great track by Bryn and well done by Diviner, stellar collab! A solid, feel good, stuck right in my head for days, cool cool, catchy pop tune, love that Peter Gabriel, African, vibe. You are the coolest! Here is a lesson on what a great hook is! It makes a great song! And it's not even real words! Is it? hah! Simply perfection, a few words, a few notes, done right, and voila! A hit! Made my day!!!!!!

Ed Hannifin said 2290 days ago (December 14th, 2010)
I could totally...
...do an acoustic, 'round campfire version of this tune...with, like, hand drums and junk...

People could do it in a round.... For HOURS, probably....

Or it could morph into something between Rusted Root and Poi Dog Pondering...

It's kind of interesting that it's so constructed from snippets and slices and synths and bits of distorted and distressed things, and yet it ends up having something very organic about it nonetheless...

Organic, infectious and good... Neat vocal, Michael. Again....
michael2 said 2290 days ago (December 15th, 2010)
thanks ed
that is a funny picture. i'm glad you liked this one. the organic vibe probably comes from doing the midi on my laptop keyboard before I knew what the tempo was. keeps it rough. thanks for the listen.

great choice. unless "adaal" means something and I'm missing the point. Really digging the relaxed, bring-the-inevitable lyrics. DL. And Bryn's got a great point about OMD.
