Suburban Girl, Why are You so Jive?

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
this tune is dedicated to those suburban girls that would toss their hair at us rural kids at away basketball games, they thought they were all that because they lived closer to the mall i guess. i always thought it was funny because none of us were cool, we weren't in LA or New York or anything we were all just various degrees of hayseed. but i guess they thought they were less hayseed than us. anyway i've done a lot of musing on the concept of cool over the years, i think it's really interesting how it defines us really these days cradle to grave, i find myself subconsciously setting my daughter up to be cool in school even in 2nd grade. it's a strange and wonderful world. anyway this is a tune about cool. and an excuse to sing 'jive' which is one of my favorite words.

Lyrics
"Hay"
I heard you say
"In my teeth"
you believe
Something about
"Sweet Jesus"
"Oh, Sweet Jesus"
Well your sambas
aint never seen a football
and your wang chung
aint never seen a dance hall
oh, why are you so jive?

Suburban Girl
You get me down, why don't you turn it around?
Suburban Girl
You get me down, why don't you turn it around?

"Backward"
I heard you say
I was walking, you were too
something like a stare
and you shook yourself like a dog
well your highbrow
aint never read a book now
and your uptight
aint never got that walk right
Oh, why are you so jive?

Suburban Girl
You get me down, why don't you turn it around?
Suburban Girl
You get me down, why don't you turn it around?

We'd give our right arms for each other
but we'll never tell the other
oh no

This is so cool -
you have finally arrived - you are indeed cooler than those other hayseeds who can't swing the jive like you can. No contest. You're a black slacks man in a white socks world. If they only knew what's become of you.

i thought maybe
i'd get a few 'too twee' comments on the keys, that's a pretty silly refrain but i like to make my tunes a balancing act between whimsy and longing so like always i ignored my better sense and mixed it down. really glad you liked it man.

cool one Craig. it was always interesting to recognize the cliques. i walked my own course back in those days.

what i really like the most here is how you approached the lead vocal.

white slacks and black socks? yeah high school was a lot of looking at a person and thinking 'i wonder what that person's like' and them looking back at you and thinking the same thing and then your buddies saying 'come on' and never finding out.

Sparse and poignant. Love the spotty breaks, the syncopated guitar twacks. Your voice is perfect, just the right amount of whisper and snarkiness. The rhodes just makes this song. Well, you are very cool now, so let 'em eat their hearts out...

i've always admired singers who can do that, the weakerthans, clem snide, say hello to your mom etc. glad you liked it man, thanks for the listen. 'syncopated guitar twacking'... i like it!

Hayseed..
What the hec is that? Hehe, that's just my Brooklyn humor. I never liked those foo-foo girls either growing up. Trust me, we have them in the City too!

Very cool tune, the music track is great & I dig the laid-back vocals. Great stuff!

Brooklyn?
Brooklyn is as cool as it gets. Tony Manero lived in brooklyn. A 'cool' comment from brooklyn? That's the equivalent of superstardom where i live. Maybe i should start a fan club...

what a tune
this is frikking amazing. and yes, the concept of cool is preposterous. I was a city kid, but dated suburban girls: they were nicer and thought I was cooler than I really was.

this song is effortless, I instantly found myself harmonizing on the Wang Chung line; and there are some sneaky little intricacies in the chorus back ups. all in all, one of your best IMO. one of the silly things I do is when I hear I song I try to picture it being performed live onstage. sometimes it works, sometimes not. this comes to life vividly in my head.

i do that too
i think about where it would come in a set of my other songs. i took my wife to see john mayer a while back and whenever i imagine a song live i think about that crowd, thousands of teenage girls with their cells phones held up recording and sending clips to their friends. i hadn't been to a concert in a long time and it was amazing to me, how much life there was in the z generation or whatever they're calling them. gave me hope for the world.

Production magic
The song, is of course, wonderful. You can't write bad lyrics and your musical approach is always fresh. What stands out here though is the wonderful production work. You've started to create the perfect sonic space for your voice and your terrific backing arrangements. Everything fits in place beautifully, with acres of texture and a wonderfully sparse musical accompaniment. As I understand it this it the last Tempie tune of 2010, what a way to leave the year behind!

oh i could and have written bad lyrics
how about this 'down this dusty road i go, looking like hell but who's to know'. that was my first recorded song. i was 13. has it gotten better? i like to think so. you're the wind beneath my production wings ha DVP has been good for me that way.

Minimalist arrangement is very cool, keys are a real nice touch. The 2 vocal tracks on the chorus is great. This reminds me of Elvis Costello some.

Jive Jive Jive
This song puts the "E" in "Easygoing"! Love the description you wrote. One detail I really enjoyed in this song is the use of the background vocals. I like the almost "call-and-response" use of lead and background vocals in the chorus. "Jive" is a really cool word--I agree.

Easy E
when i was a kid i worshiped john travolta as tony manero in saturday night fever and outlaw country singers. yeah it seems like an odd combination, but then travolta did urban cowboy and it all came together. anyway they both used the term 'jive' and 'jive turkey' alot, so i did too. and i still do, like some relic. old habits die hard.

Too Twee
Just kidding. I don't even know what that means. And welcome to the Elvis Costello club! Your rimmed glasses and fancy hat are on their way.

Love the juicy guitar/keys work in the instrumental break. Complete with fakeout pauses. I'm also a fan of the "I'm railing against you in a soothing voice" song. It's more frustrating for the other party. The quoting from the first verse feels very Paul Simon. Conversational and almost too realistic for song dialogue. I'd like to hear some tambourine 3/4 of the way through the chorus (once the snare kicks in). But that's not really a crit. Just my George Martin moment.

a standby of the bedroom singer/songwriter since 1964. and now i think i might just stamp the word JUICY on the back of my guitar. that would be hilarious.

agree with paddy re: outstanding production. one of your best I'd say. the bass sound is, um... cool. spacious, interesting arrangements and guitar bits are impressive as always.

thanks man i've gone another layer down into production. still don't do half as much as 90% of the people out here but every little bit helps. i wanted to return to more of the laid back sound i started with to end up the year, lots of moving parts and lots of space. glad you liked it and thanks for the listen!

Excuse To Sing Jive
There's not a one of us here who hasn't looked for an excuse to sing jive.

I really like this very different approach you've taken. The very laid back vocals are a real treat for my ears. I was expecting you to crank the wacky up to 12 in the chorus, but you didn't and I'm glad you didn't. I like not getting what I was expecting. That's so NOT backward of you.

I'm sure your daughter has no choice but to be cool. I mean "Hay", her dad's a rockstar!

Jive
Those fingers sliding the strings have to be the definition of coolness.
All the instruments and the vocals are so beautifully restrained. And then as a whole they sound complete and flexible like a loose mesh. Love it.
Coolness is in the eye of the beholder.
