Abby's Gotta Dance / With (Too many to mention)

Description
I first posted Abby’s Gotta Dance as an open collaboration back in June. It was pretty bare; just voice, guitar and canned drums. Rok41 and Sloparts did some great and creative versions of it. About the same time Sister Anne Cozean sent me some ideas for back ground vocals. They were too good to pass up so I started shopping the collaboration to put together my own version. Many of you were on vacation or involved in school, but our “little” band grew to about nine members over the next few months. (My coordinating skills leave a lot to be desired, so there was a lot of stopping and starting over this time.) With all these tracks to juggle, I knew I’d probably make a mess of things, so I was pretty receptive to Ed’s (Sloparts) offer to mix the song. The man is amazing! We have nine musicians and there were quite a few suggestions and concerns about the final product. Ed addressed and took care of each and every one of them with unbelievable patience and skill. I believe what we have here is the 12th “final” mix. Thank you Ed.

Here are the artist’s who were “too many to mention:”

Jack (Davisamerica) on drums
Rich (Rgpaddler) on clav & piano
John (Ktb) on organ
Damien (Damien) on horns
Andy (Awigzell) on saxophone
Anne (Sisters) on background vocals
Sigmund (Sigmund “the all knowing”) on lead guitar
Neil (Jiguma) on bass
Terry (Davisamerica2) on vocals (my guitar may still be in there somewhere)

A thousand thanks to all these guys for their wonderful contributions to Abby. Hope everyone enjoys our efforts here. Peace. Terry

Lyrics
Abby’s Gotta Dance

Well I know a little girl and her name is Abby
She can’t sit still, it just makes her crabby
She’s gotta dance
And she can kick so high, she can almost fly
Like a little bird, she takes to the sky
She’s gotta dance

Yes, Abby’s gotta dance, Abby’s gotta dance
With every little step, there’s a smile on her face
Abby’ gotta dance
Yes, Abby’s gotta dance, Abby’s gotta dance
With every little move, there’s a glimmer in her eye
Abby’s gotta dance
She’ll be gone all night, but her Mama don’t care
There ain’t no question; who, what or where
She’s gotta dance umhmm

Well, at 23rd and Penn she’s a at it again
There’s a guitar pickin’, and it’s her best friend
She’s gotta dance
If there’s no room on the floor, well they can just hit the door
Coz there ain’t no stopping Abby when she’s ready for more
She’s gotta dance

Chorus

I keep the car on the road and the music down low
But when Abby gets in, well it’s a story told
She’s gotta dance
With all the rockin’ and groovin’, and she can’t stop movin’
Well, I try to slow it down, she says “Nothin’ doin’.
“I gotta dance!”

Chorus

So good
The musicians in here are amazingly good. Terry, your delivery of the lyrics is perfect, and the added instruments and Annie's vocals make it more special. Kudos to all!

You know I've got to say something about this one,
What a great bunch of player this is. It's like the A-team of MacJams, their hard work and professionalism really shows on this song. Terry's going on about my mixing skills, but in reality it was all of these folks pointing out the flaws in the various mixes I sent out that got this one where it is. Their ears and careful listening skills gave me the information I needed to refine it, and there's no way I could have done this good a mix without them. Their patience and understanding made my job easy and rewarding.

Great job, all of you and Terry especially you for putting this song, and these players together for it.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Don't know how you did it Ed
My head would have exploded trying to maneuver this. I'm still recovering from a Rubiks Cube encounter I had several years ago. Ha. But like I said, next time I get up there to Arkansas, I'm bringing my note pad, and jotting down all those potions and incantations in your studio. You did a great job here, and we all thank you. T

gotta say
catchy as can be...this one has a bunch fun. It sounds so tight too. The cast is solid, the beat tenacious, the harmonies are money, the riffs are killa...what more? The lyrics and lead singing are just what the doctor ordered. Basically the song is ok :)

Thanks for the dl :)

OMG - this is just fabulous! what a wonderful and totally killer band - i think this might be the largest collection of band members i've ever seen at MJ - lots of cat herding, and done SO WELL! this will be stuck in my head for WEEKS! I love everything that everybody did, and a very special tip of the hat to Rich's incredible piano playing - WOOT!!! Congrats to each and every one of you!

With all the "final" mixes we've heard, I'm sure it's going to be in our heads for a while too. I agree about Rich's piano. That sound fit like a glove in this song. All the keys throughout this song, like the horns thoroughly fed my fantasy. Never dreamed it could sound like this. Fantastic band I have here. Thanks for the listen. T

Great mix Ed
This seems like years ago that we played on this one, and I was really pleased when the emails started a few days ago - final mixing was just a few minor tweaks away from being posted. Of course each of us then had "mixing suggestions" and poor Ed complied with each and every one, ending up with this excellent tune. Terrific playing from everyone, and yet another brilliant song from Terry.
LOTS of class here lady and gentlemen!
Glad to be a part of it.

When the mixing began.....
I was wondering if some of you even remembered playing on it. It really drug out a long time. This bass you did, Neil, was fantastic. Everyone wanted that way up front as a driving force. You've really sweetened every song of mine you've played on. I hope you stay open for more collabs. Thank you sir. T

Jack, Rich, John, Damien, Anne, Sigmund “the all knowing”, Neil andTerry,,, Thank thank you guys for this one. So glad to hear that Abby has taken her rightful place in the cosmos. Cool horn parts written by Damien. What I like the best is hearing Anne's attempt at making us guys sound credible, eh guys? Tip-o-the-flaggon to Anne and Ed. Ed ... what can I say? You got the ball rolling, Anne
As I recall, you sent me several tracks until you were happy with it, and with each one I said, "Perfect! Couldn't be better!" With your vocals on the initial mix people saw Abby's potential and wanted to be a part of it, and what a crew we gathered! Yes, Rich's funky clav was a track that I wanted to bring out front. It really captured the spirit of the song. There were so many great jewels in these tracks, my head was spinning. Thanks to Ed, Abby avoided that wheelchair. Lots of ingredients, one great taste.
Terry, I hate to compare musicians to others but I have to, in a good way, liken your smooth tone to two disparate talents: John Mayall and Pops Staples. Hope that sits well with you.

This is loads of fun to listen to with its balance of fat bottom but a great shuffle and all that dynamic stuff in the mix. It's crowded on "paper" but not to the ear. Anne, Sig, Damien -- shuck-ems, all y'all -- have cooked this one up just right.

It keeps getting better
What a fun song! There's always something happening, always done with precision. Lots happening musically, all interpreting the main theme of joy as Abbey's gotta dance. Love it!

Every time someone me their track, it became a brand new song. It was fascinating to watch as it came together. I had a very talented crew on this. We're glad you enjoyed it. T
