Description
I sent this to Andrew Lack and asked if he’d be kind enough to put a bass guitar track on it. Minutes later he’d done it. He then offered to mix it, and very quickly it roller-coasted into a full-on re-working and numerous very enjoyable skype conversations. Andrew then suggested sending it to Mike Watkins who very kindly put some percussion on. We then had more to and fro tweaks and finally we arrived at this. Andrew is such a nice guy, and a real professional – a perfectionist…..and I love working with perfectionists.
The artwork is from a photo of the statue at the beginning of the pier here in Deal, Kent.

Lyrics
winter clouds drifting lonely grey
got into your head and now won’t go away
they follow you most everywhere you go
better off with them than any devil you don’t know
and the lights go down, and you stumble round
an empty aching in your soul

on your own is where you’ve found a friend
in a solitude where you can see no end
no fake or fool is going to bring you down
to the shiny end of your dark and lonely town
where the lights go down, and the people found
they share the aching in your soul

and you cry into your hands and wonder why
all the people seem to have a better time than you
and you walk home alone and the riverboats they come and they go

and every flame of hope inside is slowly dying
and it drags you down and round and round
although you keep on trying
there’s a place you know where you’re blinded by the light
and you sigh and we cry

another lonely soul
another lonely soul

Julian, this superb! First off the melody and lyric are excellent. Mike did a very nice job here, subtle and tasteful all the way through. Andrew is in the pocket as always, great mix too! The vocal overlays really are well thought out and combined with the harmonies (especially on "sigh and cry") are killer. You should be very proud of this. Great job all!

Wow
The more your songs develop, the more like James Taylor you sound. Really cool, could have fooled that it was James Taylor on this. Nice song in the vein of "Hotel Life". Great work here. One of the best singer songwriters on here, deepest bows!

Andrew sounds awesome in his roles as always. Great instrumentalization and production. Mike was excellent on drums as always!

This is WONDERFUL!!! Julian, I am such a fan of your incredible songwriting, guitar playing and voice. To that already bowl of perfection, you've added the work of two of MJ's finest, and this mixing job is nothing short of stunning. I will enjoy this for a long time to come, and it's just thrilling to have it here today - congratulations to you all, and thank you Julian for sharing your stellar gifts with MJ!

That harmony at 3:00 man... my head cracked so open. Beautiful words. Who didn't went through this. A sad song with no visible hope. But there's warmth everywhere else: in the voice, the guitars, the percussion, the crystal clear mix. Bittersweet.

Can't really take credit
I love this song - the smooth, easy vibe; the contrast of the Saturday night depression of the lyrics against the sunny Sunday morning of the backing; the harmonies; the production; Andrew's bass; everything. I'm convinced Julian is one of the best vocalists here at MacJams. I'm glad that being a part of this has introduced me to his work.

As for the percussion - while I appreciate all the folks who've said nice things, it's not really my doing. I just re-recorded Julian's existing percussion loop, retiming it and adding a bit more of a human feel in the process - adding some cymbal hits here and there for sparkle.

Very glad to have been asked to help and it's cool to be along for the ride!

Nicely done
Very smooth and easy is not always so easily done. You all did a really great job off making this seem pretty effortless.

Julian, what can I say? You are one great singer.

Andrew and Mike really put together about the perfect soundbed for Julians vocals.

All of this fit just right.

Very enjoyable.

talent
oozes out of this. Your voice is so clear and sounds like it could be jazzy if it wanted to, but has decided to be something entirely different. This song keeps flitting between jazzy and folky, and the result is very compelling. The harmonies add some irony to some otherwise-overwrought lyrics. I like that -- they're no longer overwrought. I do think you might want to play with some of your phrasing, but that's me reading your lyrics without the music. I think this is excellent work, and hope there's another one coming soon.

Cheers

So I finally figured it out
who you remind me of, you are Simon and Garfunkel, Seal's and Croft, Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, all rolled into one better package, Love everything about this, I would consider adding a chorus (hook), between the verses and after the bridge, even if it's just singing "Another Lonely Soul" to the chords already there, I hear it, and might add it for my own little version, you know I'm a huge fan, I think you are an extraordinarily talented triple threat, singer/songwriter/musician!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

one of your best
Absolutely stellar. I particularly like the layering of your vocals towards the end - works beautifully. Of course, the singing and the guitar are sublime, but the lyrics are great too - you really are a fine lyricist. You're so good, I've had to send twenty ninja assassins to Deal. They are bringing your fingers and vocal chords back to my headquarters here in Smokeytown.

Such a nice,
easy singing style. The lyrics are moving and easy to relate to. The melody reminds me of all the best the ballad songwriters have left us. Wonderful mix, Andrew. Mike and Andrew.. your additions rounded out what was, I'm sure, a near perfect sound. Well done. Thanks.

Pain
The lyrics on this tune, seem to me to be an expression of the deep felt pain and hunger of loneliness and depression, a problem known well amongst artists. Sometimes it is the subconscious reason we need to be constantly creating, in order to get some positive acknowledgment of our existence even if only felt temporarily. The book "Van Gogh Blues" talks of this common problem amongst artists.
Your voice as always is wonderful, and the macjams community is so happy your voice is amongst us.

The Perfectionists
and it sounds like it. A great lyric and sung with your elegant style and grace. The harmonies are beautiful and really work through out, as too those gentle guitars. J, you should be out on the circuit with your material. The bass is a little low in the mix for me, however the mix is very good, i am glad Andrew paid attention to the details and was so helpful to you.

Wonderful production to a superb song. To me the vocal melody and lyrics are the standout performance here, with the other instruments complementing each other and the vocals perfectly. CSN should be jealous that they didn't write this.

America?
Something in the use of guitars in multiple registers reminds me of that 70s trio. And I mean that as a compliment. Excellent guitar work. Great vocals too.

The bass triggers my pet peeve: it plays the exact same rhythm as the guitars. That makes it kinda disappear. I like my bass lines a bit more independent.

Now I have to go search for that percussion, because that is a bit very subtle....

Solitude
This is fantastic in terms of production, singing, guitar, sound... the whole song, in fact! It sounds completely professional... reminds me a wee bit of "folk-rockers" of my youth, such as Seals and Crofts, and America.

One thing I find interesting about this is that the poetry communicates sadness and longing, but the music is considerably more "up" and mellow (in a contented kind of way) than that, and I'm wondering what your take on that is... was it deliberate, or did it just work out that way, or maybe you don't see any difference between the mood of the text and that of the song? Just curious.
