Description
Kassia recently posted a lovely piece of music called Dancing Monks that was performed on the Hang Drum. ParticleDots downloaded the mp3 and did a remixed version with additional percussion and bass. This ended up in my hands and I added some synth, mellotron, a "vocal," and snippets from a phonautogram recording of a vocal scale that was recorded in 1860. These were recorded by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville and are the earliest recordings of the human voice, and now they are a EXS instrument in my collection; old becomes new.

After I played with the track, I sent it to Kassia and she was kind enough to give her blessing. Thanks Kassia and Bryn.

thanks Karen
no idea what genre this should fall under, so since there is a lot of delay, we'll default with Dub. As for the feel, Bryn coined the term "slab" to describe his awesome track (he did most of the heavy lifting, i just added the shiny bits). thanks so much for checking this out.

yup
it's been slowed, chopped, added to... the way that Bryn and Kevin and I usually work together is we send tracks to each other and we have no idea how they will come back, then we keep adding (or subtracting). the method was followed with this one as well; something fascinating about how different a piece of music becomes after it's been passed around between people. distorts beyond the original intent (kind of like a rumor). thanks for checking it out.

Hi Michael.....
This is a great listen. The mix, whilst being exotic, keeps the attention and sounds superb. I agree with the dub genre. I could almost here a pseudo-Marley version.

Interesting facts re the voice part.

Have a great holiday with your family and I hope 2011 is good for you.

Take care.

Paul

Wowee!
Coolaroonie! You've been working on these files too. This is very good and yes; not a bit like mine. I wouldn't really label this dub as such, though there are some very good dubby effects. It has a really cool psychedelic flavour, if you ask me. But hey! What's in a genre!

Very nice indeed, I've taken a download, thank you.

super cool
this is so far from anything my brain could come up. it's awesome. i love the sound of everything slowed down, and the dub stuff you added is great. it's thrilling to do these hang drum pieces, and then see what other people do with them. thanks guys!

ha
I am so glad you approve, I love doing this sort of thing. as for you not thinking that way: that's the beauty of the collaborative process. I would never have come up with your hang drum piece, or Bryns soundbed. Everyone brings in something unique. Thanks for allowing this.

Strange
and other worldly sounding.... fascinating sounds , especially the vocal recording...... a bit like being locked in a windowless room and hearing the outside world, cheers M

Grreat work on this - I loved hearing the progress
and I really think this a fine iteration of the soul of Shays work and the art of oblique strategy. What's interesting is that my daughter is playing clarinet in the next room and it firs in perfectly. Great treat. The vocals are so cool. I think the genre is Bedouin D&B.

wow
you should have recorded her, and then done another remix. we could just keep adding found sounds to this into it sounds completely unrecognizable. thanks Kevin.

les gammes
oh yeah this really takes it to another dimension. fantastic on headphones. the vocal snippets are really interesting but i wanted more volume on them...in fact i wanted more of them...no wait they're back and clearer so am satisfied. what a cool track. excellent.

thanks man
it's been raining here for a week and this was pretty inspired by that. I did do a mix with the vox louder, but they just sounded bad. it's a french man making a speech and even with lots of EQ work they wouldn't sit nice in the track, so I decided to go with a more subliminal vibe. thanks so much for checking this out, really glad you enjoyed it.

in Logic when you use a sampler instrument, it's an EXS instrument. really easy to use the EXS sampler, you should check out how to do it (then find yourself constantly looking for new source material). here's a tutorial:

If It Ain't Broke...
Well, the APOD method of collaboration once again triumphs over mediocrity. It's amazing how you maintained the integrity of the vibe of the original, while simultaneously made it your own. Downloading now. Thanks for posting.

There's
some of Shay's chill Oriental vibe but now it is moving off into into the frozen outposts of space on unmanned space ships who say "hi" to each other with music like this. Cool. Thanks.

Had to google hang drum.... How cool do they sound?! I want one.
I dig the moody ambience here. Can easily lose a few minutes in this tune.
Great

Very cool. I'd put it in "cinematic soundtrack". Open and atmospheric. Sounds like a great rainy day soundtrack.

love the bass flutters and I'm always a fan when someone actually plays a unique instrument. You and Bryn's additions are fascinating, indeed. I'd pay a handsome sum to watch you guys do your thing.
